Happy BirthdayIt was Monday, July 25, 2016, and President Shannon Ryan seized the podium from MC Dan Saks (fresh off a Baltic Cruise) and Birthday Basher Norm Levin, celebrating his own birthday this very day and honoring July birthday boys Tom Zimmerman, Patrick Fard, Matt Peck, Mark Balance and Wendell Harter, sharing the news stories on each of their days…..We heard from a sincere and grateful engineering student about to matriculate at Cornell, Robert Morgowicz, who came with his parents to thank us personally for our scholarship…..George Butts also came to thank us for our contribution to CERT…..And we shared the Beach Reporter article recognizing President Shannon as her family’s fourth generation club president.

USC Coach Andy EnfieldOur speaker, introduced by Les Silverman, was USC Basketball Coach (and Manhattan Beach resident) Andy Enfield. The son of schoolteachers, and himself an accomplished student at Johns Hopkins, Coach made clear that his first priority is education, even for his serious NBA candidates. His program mentors leadership and success, which really come down to hard work. Last in order for him (but first in order of how he’s judged), is the winning record of his basketball team—which is perhaps why his team is a winning program once again. He spoke of recruiting, of “one and done,” and of the tough Pac-12 Conference. He told us that in basketball and life, “You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take.”

Rotary Cares Is Back!On the club business side, President Shannon told us that Steve De-Baets and Steve Murillo are resurrecting Rotary Cares and are looking for suggestions. Shannon then told us she is celebrating her new presi-dency by jumping ship for two weeks, during which we will be subjected to the presidential presumptions of Larry Johnson and Ian Jackson.

Kent Caldwell Moves OnMost importantly, and sadly, we took this date to bid farewell to Kent Caldwell, our only member to have been elected to the Rotary District 5280 Hall of Fame. He is taking some time off from Rotary, and, with any luck he’ll be back one of these days. Kent has a storied history, both personally and with our club. He is a Manhattan Beach native, a Mira Costa grad, who spent 34 years in our club. He’s practiced the vocational ethics we preach in his insurance business and has been the father to two fine boys. He was for countless years the heart and soul of RYLA, making RYLA the heart and soul of countless Southern California teenagers. He is a Past President of our club. He famously led 30+ holiday sing-alongs and 30+ demotions. He has been a church leader. He is a lifelong beach volleyball fixture in the Beach Cities and played volleyball at USC, his beloved alma mater. He is a musician, a lyricist, a singer, a performer, a costumer, and a man with relentless attention to detail. He remains an ath-lete despite difficult recoveries from two major health scares. Perhaps best of all, he is as kind and non-judgmental a man as we will ever know.
