The growth of a Symbol
Manhattan truly reflects the name that the Native Americans gave it, Manna-
Hatta. It is an island of corporate hills. It is an island of grand commerce and
businesses. Giant skyscrapers cut into the sky, showing off individual companys power
and prestige to each other and to the world. The introduction of public transportation
made it so that many people could navigate the city with ease all at the same time. This
made it possible to build more large buildings as workplaces. New York has not always
been like this. In the 17th century, the majority of the island was farmland, Harlem was
the home of 91 very wealthy estates, and the city was small and new.
New York has always been a city of commerce. This is mostly due to its location,
harbored behind Long Island; it is a great natural port for ships. In 1825, the Erie Canal
was completed, locking in New York as the place for trade and commerce. The New
York Stock Exchange was originally formed by 24 people with 5 stocks under a
sycamore tree on Wall Street. Now it drives the economy of the entire United States and
has a large influence on the worlds economy. This is evident in the stock market crash
in 1929.
In 2001, New York was attacked by terrorists for the very same reason New York
stands out from other cities in the world. New York is the symbol of American freedom.
It is proof of the American dream, that with a little hard work, the average person can
make it to the big time.

Statement from the Jury
Manhattan was a really great place for my urban analysis because of the vast
amount of information available at my fingertips. I have never been in New York, but
after doing this research I would love to go visit. I am not completely satisfied by the
content of my boards because they dont communicate what I learned from this exercise.
During the jury, it was brought to my attention that on my boards I display the facts that I
gathered from various places, but I dont graphically display the underlying compilation
of these facts. If I had a chance, I would design another board that would show that
Manhattan is the symbol of American freedom and commerce. I would show how all the
facts I presented on the original four boards can be summarized into a unified conclusion.
I would display a map that shows how the growth of the island correlates with the events
that took place there. I would also show how these events made this city unique.
