Changing faces at the Richmond Online Access Centre The Richmond Online Access Centre farewells Dearne Willing after 7 years coordinating Centre activities. Dearne was instrumental in the establishment of the Centre, including the relocation to our current site in the Richmond Courthouse building. We wish her well in her new role with TasTAFE. August also marks the final shift of long-time volunteer Sandra Ellis, who has recently relocated to Sorell and will be offering her valuable services to that community going forward. Sandra has been with the Centre for 8 years and is one of our longest serving volunteers. We wish her all the best!Amy Russell has now taken on the part-time Coordinator role for the Centre. You may already know Amy from The Coterie or as the bread maker at the Richmond market. Amy can be contacted via the usual ROAC avenues, or pop in to the Centre on Tuesdays or Wednesday morning for a chat.

New Coal River Valley attractions gear up for summerThe past month has seen a number of new attractions launched in the Valley, as businesses gear up for a busy summer. Jackie and Darren Brown from Puddleduck Vineyard hosted a formal launch for their new extensions, housing a beautiful new wine tasting room and deck. Melanie and Daniel Leesong have welcomed their first visitors to Coal River Farm, with Premier Will Hodgman on hand for the official opening on August 12. Plans are on track at Riversdale Estate, where Wendy and Ian Roberts are planning a December launch for their Beatrix Potter’s Peter Rabbit Garden and new French Bistro on the property. In the north of the Valley, Chef Anton Kunz has taken the reins at Steve and Kay Appleby’s rebuilt Campania Bar and Bistro, offering a modern twist on traditional bar and bistro food.

Volunteers wanted!It can be frustrating when you come into the Richmond Online Access Centre with your urgent photocopying, printing, laminating or burning internet search question, only to find a closed door. Perhaps you’d like to sign up to help keep the services and good company flowing! The Centre is powered by volunteers, who keep the door open for anyone wishing to use the computers or obtain help with printing, copying and computer familiarisation. You don’t need to be a computer expert - if you know how to turn the computers on, use the internet and check emails, you already have skills that can assist others. If you have a few hours to spare on week days and would be interested in volunteering, please contact the Centre.

Richmond Online Access Centre ServicesComputer & Internet access - local residents who have filled in a registration form at the Centre can use the computer facilities for $1/hour. Access is free for registered Tasmanian low income earners with a valid Health Care Card, Pensioner Card or Repatriation Card. Casual, non-registered users can pop in and use the computers for $5 for 30 minutes, or a quick 15 minute email check for $3.Printing & Copying - colour and black and white printing and copying is available, starting from 20c per A4 sheet of black and white text. A4 and A3 printing/copying is available. Discounts available for bulk printing.Document binding, laminating and folding services are also available.

New linen solution for local businessesIn July 2015, the main supplier providing clean linen to local businesses stopped servicing regional areas, including Richmond and the Coal River Valley. As a result, local accommodation providers have worked together to develop a competitively priced regional linen service warehouse model. The new local linen hire service for accommodation, food businesses and wineries is called Richmond Linen, and allows locals to pick up and drop off linen from a central point. Richmond Linen will provide quality sheets, towels, table linens, napkins, aprons, tea towels etc to any local businesses interested in the service. Richmond Advisory Committee updateThere are a couple of interesting reviews at various stages at the moment - the Draft Richmond Bridge Vegetation Plan (DRBVP) and a Signage review. Don Thomson, the consultant undertaking the DRBVP, recently spoke to the Richmond Advisory Commitee. A number of questions and issues were raised and the committee was requested to speak with various organisations and use the website to provide feedback.The Signage review is in its very early stages. Bob McNab spoke about the information he and Theona Martin had gathered in relation to the number and variety of signs around the village. Coal River Valley Sustainable Living GroupThere are now over 100 electric vehicles on the road in Tasmania. Consequently, the Australian Electric Vehicle Association formed a Tasmanian State Chapter, launched at the State Theatre on 15 August. The launch featured short films, an expert panel and a Q&A session with local owners of electric vehicles. A number of electric vehicles were on display, including a Tesla, Mitsubishi PHEV Outlander 4WD and a Nissan Leaf.Tasmania’s petroleum is now imported directly from South East Asia. Electricity represents a locally produced, sustainable, secure transport-energy supply. What you spend stays here. Design has commenced for installation of an EV charging network in Tasmania.There will be no August meeting. The next meeting for our local group is on Wednesday 9th September at 7 pm at the Community Meeting Room, 22 Torrens Street, Richmond. Prospective members are very welcome to attend. Clarence Council Community GrantsQuick Response Grants of up to $150 are available for one-off activities or projects that benefit the community, such as assistance for an individual to attend a competition or conference. Applications can be submitted at any time.Community Support Grants of up to $1500 are available to groups for one-off activities and events that will support the community. Applications close 15 September.Applications are also open for larger scale Partnership Grants of up to $15,000, which can be disbursed over 3 years. Australian Red Cross Richmond BranchAt the AGM held on 20 July, retiring President June Headlam reported on a very effective and successful year of service and fundraising. Community Service Awards have been presented to students at both the St John’s and Richmond Primary schools. The long term project to support a student to attend the commemoration of the Centenary of Gallipoli was successfully completed. Several successful fundraising activities allowed the Branch to contribute to many Red Cross programmes to support the vulnerable in our community and to contribute to appeals for those impacted by natural disasters.With all positions declared vacant, the following were elected: President - Judy Leisk, Vice President - Jan Ross, Secretary - Odile Glenn, Treasurer - Wendy Barber (subject to confirmation). All Red Cross members and volunteers are welcome to support the Branch. Does Neighbourhood Watch need to be rekindled?On the back of an increase in local crime over the past few months, local Police would like to know if there is interest in re-starting a local Neighbourhood Watch group. Whilst establishing a formal group is an option, there is also scope for local officers to make themselves available to the community on a regular basis, such as an informal monthly Saturday morning gathering to coincide with the Richmond market. If you are interested, please lodge your name with the Richmond Online Access Centre (phone or richmond.oac@education.tas.gov.au).

Richmond Tennis ClubSeptember is the start of the Tennis Year so the Richmond Tennis Club is inviting all past and present members to renew their membership and get fit on the courts at 2 Victoria St. The courts are open for social play on Tuesday morning and Wednesday evening, and other times by arrangement. Coaching will recommence in Term 4 for adults and children. The AGM will be held in the Club House at 2pm, Sunday 13 September. There will be tennis beforehand and afternoon tea to follow. Coal River Valley Garden Club to tour the NW coastThe Coal River Valley Garden Club is visiting the North-West coast for a 3 day tour of gardens from Friday 16 - Sunday 18 October 2015.
