Mandela the GREAT Watch: His Excellency

    Tata Madiba Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Nelson

Mandela Continues to Fight and Defy the

    Gloom and Doom

In contrast to the frenetic media carnival that morphed outside the

hospital Madiba receives treatment from the end of June 2013, a more

reflective, settled and sober appreciation of His Excellency Nelson

Mandelas life is palpable in the Republic of South Africa, the African

    Continent and the World.

The health saga of His Excellency Tata Madiba Rolihlahla Dalibhunga

Nelson Mandela has quietly shifted from a gloomyif not morbidwait for

the worst news out of his Pretoria hospital to what has nearly become a

spirit of local and international cheering over his progress in recent weeks.

On the 22nd July 2013, South African President Jacob Zuma issued a

statement saying that His Excellency Madiba Mandela is showing sustained

improvement. That comes after His ExcellencyMandelas daughter spoke

last week of her father possibly leaving intensive care, and even eventually

going home from the hospital altogether.

There is an authentic element of inspiration to this. His Excellency Madiba

Mandela is a lifelong fighter, and at 95 he is defying the confident

expectations of his demiseas he defied the system of apartheid and the

attempts of his jailers, for 27 years, to defeat his spirit. He is again turningthe story about him around.

Last week South Africans and the World celebrated with a day of minimum

67 minutes service as His Excellency Madiba Mandela marked his birthday

    the Nelson Mandela International Day.

What a welcome change from 8th June, when some media erroneously

reported that His Excellency Madiba Mandela had died, and an Australian

politician sent condolences to the Mandela familyand every day various

oleaginous commentaries seemed to eagerly roll out the red carpet for theimminent earthly departure of the first Indigenous South African President

of formerly Caucasian Minority-ruled Republic of South Africa.

What has replaced the often unseemly death watch now seems to be a more

settled, sober, and calm appreciation of His Excellency Madiba Mandelas

    life and its significance.

Dr Koku Adomdza, President and Senior Fellow of the GREAT Partnership

the mood has changed from doom and gloom to that of palpable hope; but

we relent not. We continue to believe in the power of Prayer. We call it the

Madiba the GREAT Watch. His Excellency Tata Nelson Mandela showed

tremendous courage in the face of the most brutal and savage of minority

regimes in human history, challenged and confronted the force of Apartheid

evil, was ready to die for a good cause, did time as Prisoner of Conscience for

27 years, offered 67 years of momentous Public Service - to pack an

incredible and remarkable illuminating life into a couple of sentences. Whatkind of a Man's Man! Where many cowardly men would have melted, His

Excellency Madiba stood tall; where others would have gotten corrupted

with position, wealth and power, he remained incorruptible; where many

would have betrayed the cause, he remained unrepentantly defiant and

stood his ground in the interest of the Peoples. A man of privilege and

pedigree? He could have lived a comfortable life either as royalty or apioneering barrister. Faced with falsehood and truth, he had the courage

and astuteness to choose the bitter truth of struggle for Freedom, Justice,

Equality, Liberty. Madiba lived a life sacrifice for All and the Greater Public

Benefit. It is time to bless him with our continuous Prayers fin expectation

of divine intervention for his total and full recovery. Praying for Madiba costs

nothing but entails priceless possibility of his healing. We believe that His

Excellency Madiba never dies, for his ideals live forever. God Bless His

Excellency Madiba Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Nelson Mandela.'

Earlier this month July 2013, South African media in Johannesburgreported a surprising spike in sales of books about Mandela. Agence France-

Presse said his autobiography in particular was getting new attention.

That work is largely based on his prison writings from Robben Island, in

which he advocates developing the qualities of honesty, sincerity, and

simplicitythat are within easy reach of every soul.

On 22nd July 2013 the United States White House released photos of the

Obama family visiting His Excellency Madiba Mandelas cell on Robben

Island, taken from their recent visit to South Africa, as part of a tour of

    some African Countries.

There is some feeling that an authentic appreciation of His Excellency

Madiba Mandela carries with it an important message of present day

    reconciliation.

Boston Globe columnist Jeff Jacoby on July 21, and Simon Kuper in the

Financial Times on July 22, have regarded him in the category of leadership

related to Abraham Lincoln and George Washington.

Mr. Kuper marvels that as the political strand of demonic and barbaric

Apartheid ended, Native South Africans never retaliated. He attributes this

to His Excellency Madiba Mandelas character, and a message of forgiveness

    that goes past words.

    He notes:

Indigenous and Caucasian South Africans grew up in different

neighbourhoods, spoke different languages, went to different schools, earned

different incomes and died at different ages. These divides were designed tocreate Caucasian contempt. No wonder many South African Caucasians

still live with an ancient anxiety: that one night the Native Africans will come

and slaughter them in their beds. Its an anxiety embodied most recently by

the Caucasian-baiting politician Julius Malema (expelled from the African

    National Congress last year).

    Mandela allayed this white anxiety

Jeff Jacoby points out that His Excellency Madiba Mandela embodied United

States President Lincolns malice toward none charity for all. In 1993,

not yet President, His Excellency Madiba Mandela went on the national

airwaves in a presidential moment just after a much-respected Indigenous

south African Leader, Chris Hani, was murdered. Fears of rampage and

bloodshed were running high. The TV cameras turned to His Excellency

    Madiba Mandela, as Jacoby narrates:

'Tonight I am reaching out to every single South African, Indigenous and

Caucasian [black and white], from the very depths of my being,' he

commenced. 'The cold-blooded murder of Chris Hani has sent shock waves

throughout the country and the world. Our grief and anger is tearing us

apart.' His Excellency Madiba Mandela implored the nation not to plunge

over the abyss. 'Our decisions and actions will determine whether we use

our pain, our grief, and our outrage to move forward to what is the only

lasting solution for our countryan elected government of the people, by

the people, and for the people.'

This is His Excellency Tata Madiba Rolihlahla Dalibhunga Nelson Mandela

the indefatigable fighter for ethics, values, principles, righteousness,

nonviolence and an iconic international Force for Good. That he continues to

fight even while many faint hearts sing his requiem, bear supreme testimony

to the courageous, fine character of a highly enlightened human being of

    uncommon qualities and staying power.
