Gábor Takács-Nagy conductorClaire Jones harpAmina Hussain flute

We celebrate Britten’s centenary year in a programme coupling the youthful composer’s work with that of a young Wolfgang AmadeusMozart, with whom he had such a close affinity. Britten’s Simple Symphony and Prelude and Fugue show a young composer in total mastery of his craft. We continue our Mozart concerto cycle with one of Mozart’s most loved of concertos, for flute and harp, featuring principal flautist Amina Hussain and former harpist to the Prince of Wales Claire Jones. The programme concludes with the eighteen-year-old Mozart’s 29th Symphony, a work brimming with energy, invention and pure joy.

Death and the Maiden

Giovanni Guzzo director/violin

Prepare to be dazzled as Camerata’s dynamic leader Giovanni Guzzo steps into the limelight as director and soloist in Mozart’s Fifth Concertofor Violin, written in Salzburg during the composer’s teenage years. Refined, lyrical and endlessly charming, as ever with Mozart, this concerto exhibits an extraordinary maturity beyond the composer’s years. This concert also features the Adagietto from Mahler’s Symphonyno.5, the composer’s beautiful love song to his wife Alma, made famousthrough Visconti’s film Death in Venice. Mahler’s arrangement for string orchestra of Schubert’s extraordinary 14th String Quartet, Death and the Maiden, completes the programme.

MOZART AND BRAHMSMozart String Quintet in G minor K516Wolf Italian Serenade Brahms String Quintet no.2 in G major

Manchester Camerata Principal String Players

Three lyrical masterpieces from three masters of chamber composition.Mozart’s 1787 G minor String Quintet is a dark, brooding and melancholicwork. Brahms’ second String Quintet in G major, dating from 100 yearslater, was written in the idyllic country setting of Bad Ischl in Austria. Gorgeously rich with endless melodies, this late work shows Brahms at his most inventive. Hugo Wolf’s sunny Italian Serenade for String Quartet completes the programme.

DOORS 1.00pm | PRE-CONCERT TALK 1.30pmDetails of the talk will be announced on the Camerata website soon.
