    *NEW

Last week, the 54-year-old Manatee Shopping

Guide announced on its back cover that it was the

last issue. Staff was let go, even delivery people

were told, sorry, no more job. We stepped in to

change that. We hired some shopping guide folks,

consulted with others, and we are ready to start

anew for you. And we are local. Theres no big

group and no out-of-town stock-owner company,

just folks who live and work in Manatee Countylike you do. We do NOT outsource any jobs and

we have been publishing news in Manatee County

for more than 16 years. We started humble in

1992, just as with this venture, but we plan to

go gangbusters into season, giving our advertis-

ers the best possible product by providing high

circulation, great home delivery, and keeping costs

low. For readers, we hope to provide bargains and

information in abundance. You know us as The

Islander, THE newspaper on Anna Maria Island,

carrying on a reporting tradition that began in the

1950s. Were the little engine that could. We

hope youll jump aboard with us and continue

the tradition of the shopping guide in Manatee

County. We promise to make it worthwhile to you

    and to our local economy.

    Publisher, Bonner Joy

    Manatee Humane Society, 941-747-8808.

The rainy weeks of July delivered the mosquito

    season to Manatee County.

Now the countys swat team the mosquito

control district is at work on daytime and night-

time patrols to control mosquitoes, which can bemore than just bothersome.

Mosquitoes can carry disease, which is why

county mosquito districts work with the Florida

Department of Health and other state agencies to

control the mosquito population and stress protec-

    tion against mosquito-borne disease.

Taking a few simple steps can drastically

reduce the chances of contracting a mosquito-borne

illness, said Lisa Conti, director of the states divi-

sion of environmental health. Symptoms of WestNile virus infection, St. Louis Encephalitis and

Eastern Equine Encephalitis may include headache,

fever, fatigue, dizziness, weakness and confusion.

Physicians should contact a local county health

department if they suspect an individual may have

    a mosquito-borne illness.

The state health department suggests people

remember the five Ds to protect against illness:

Drainage. Rid the area around a home of stand-

ing water, which is where mosquitoes can lay their

    eggs.

DEET. Repellents containing DEET are recom-

mended to protect against mosquito exposure. Pica-

ridin and oil of lemon eucalyptus are other repellent

    options.

Dress. Wear clothing that covers most of your

    skin.

Dusk and Dawn. Avoid being outdoors when mos-

    quitoes are most active.

The DOH also suggested people work to elimi-

nate breeding sites by cleaning out troughs and

gutters; turning over empty plant pots, picking up

all beverage containers outdoors, checking tarps

for collected water, pumping out bilges on boats,

replacing water in birdbaths at least once a week

    and removing leaves.

    Meanwhile, the Manatee County Mosquito

Control District dispatches trucks and helicopters

to problem areas, especially in the east part of the

country, where there are more breeding spots, espe-

cially ponds and open fields where vast amounts of

    water can collect.

The rainy season in Florida ushers in the mosquito

season. Islander Photo: Courtesy of the University

    of South Florida

Summer skeeter season lingersThe district, under the direction of Mark Latham,

uses trucks to spray larva during the day and trucks

and helicopters to spray to kill adults at night.

    Residents can go to www.manateemosquito.com

to track the location of the trucks and helicopters andto request service.

The control district representatives, along with

the board of the Florida Anti-Mosquito Association,

emphasize that the states sunshine and beaches

attract many visitors and new residents, but the

state might still be what early explorers termed

    inhabitable without mosquito control.

The mosquito was such a plague when the Span-

iards arrived that they named what is today Ponce

de Leon inlet Barro de Mosquitoes, according toa history at www.manateemosquito.com.

The countys mosquito control district was cre-

ated 61 years ago and has grown from using dra-

glines to trucks to aircraft over the years.

Storm damage to boats is a severe problem for Anna Maria Island. Not only are the boats damaged, but

seawalls and docks can suffer the effects of the vessels crashes.

    Dont plan to

    weather these

storms at homeHurricanes are categorized based on the power ofthe storms. Storm categories allow emergency man-agement officials to determine time and need of evacu-ation.

The Manatee County Emergency ManagementDivision notes that a Category 1 hurricane will killyou just as fast as a Category 5 storm, with the excep-tion that in a Category 5 storm you will be under alot more water.

Hurricane veterans have noted it is extremely diffi-cult to walk around in winds in excess of 50 mph 24mph less than even a Category 1 storm.

Theres also a good chance officials will be forcedto close the bridges to vehicles due to high windsbefore evacuation of Anna Maria Island is complete, providing yet another reason Island residents shouldplan to leave early if so ordered.

Hurricane forecasters use a disaster-potentialscale, called the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, toassign storms into five categories. Rated from least to

most powerful, the five categories and damage poten-tial are detailed below.

Its important to note, though, that Tropical StormGabrielle in 2001 caused massive flooding, power out-ages and damage to the area with winds of about 70mph not even a hurricane.

And dont forget all the damage on Anna MariaIsland caused by the four hurricanes of 2004, whichdidnt come very close to our shores.

And we all remember the last evacuation ofthe Island caused by Hurricane Charley, which wasdestined to make landfall at the Sunshine SkywayBridge in early forecasts before it veered right andstruck Punta Gorda, then went across the state tocause massive devastation.

CATEGORY 1Winds of 74-95 mph. Damage is primarily to

shrubbery, trees, foliage and unanchored mobilehomes. Some damage may occur to poorly constructedsigns. Storm surge is expected to be 4-5 feet above

Katrina, Rita and Wilma are familiar names tohurricane watchers, but the naming of storms isa relatively new aspect in the science of studyingwhirly weather.

    An Australian weatherman, Clement Wragge,

was the first to use female names in describingtropical storms in the late 1800s, although healso named several after politicians whom heparticularly disliked. Meteorologists in the U.S.military picked up the practice during WorldWar II, naming storms after their wives and girl-friends.

In 1951, weather officials began to use namesto designate storms, using common military titlesof Able, Baker, Charlie and the like. Two yearslater, female names became the norm, with thefirst two hurricanes dubbed Alice and Barbara.

Complaints poured into the National WeatherBureau from women upset that they were beingsingled out in describing wicked weather, but thepractice continued until 1978, when hurricanesin the eastern Pacific were alternately namedfor men and women. In 1979, nomenclature forAtlantic hurricanes followed suit with HurricaneBob the first male storm.

Six mixed-company lists of hurricane nameshave been developed by the World MeteorologicalOrganization. The names are short, easy to remem-ber and commonly used names from the English,French and Spanish languages. To receive a name,a tropical low-pressure center must develop at

Hurricane Donna in 1960 was a Category 4 stormthat killed 50 people and caused $500 million in dam-ages to Florida. Wind gusts were estimated at 180 mphin Donna.

Hurricane Opal in 1995 was also a Category 4storm, killing 59 people and causing $3 billion indamage, mostly in the Panhandle, although somedamage occurred on Anna Maria Island as the storm

tracked to the north. Also in that year, Hurricane Luiswas a Category 4 hurricane while moving over theLeeward Islands, as was Hurricane Felix. HurricaneGeorges in 1999 was at one point a Category 4 storm,

killing more than 500 people and causing more than $2billion in damage. Hurricane Floyd, also in 1999, wasat one point a Category 4 storm as it passed through

the Bahamas, but had weakened before its eventual

landfall in North Carolina. In 2004, both Hurricanes Charley and Ivan were

powerful Category 4 storms, with winds of 145 and135 mph, respectively.

CATEGORY 5Winds in excess of 155 mph. No trees, shrubs or
