Managing Autism Spectrum Disorder Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a develop-mental disorder characterised by disturbance in language, perception and social skills that affects an estimated 1–2 per 1,000 people worldwide (al-though the number is as high as 20 per 1000 in the US). In 2013, a single category of ASD united sev-eral related conditions (classical autism, Asperger’s syndrome, Fragile X Syndrome, Landau-Kleffner Syndrome, Rett syndrome, childhood disintegra-tive disorder, and PDD-NOS) was included in the DSM-5, with the aim to provide a more precise definition to will guide more consistent diagnoses and treatment.
