WHEN WOMENSAW RED INBILL ONRESERVATION

Just as the burning topic ofwoman’s reservation was beingdiscussed in the Rajya Sabha, the relevant Bill came up for adebate at a, function got up atabout the same time in theBhavan’s ESV Hall - 4PM,March 8.

The meeting had beenconvened by the students andstaff of the Bhavan’s collegesin Bangalore. The cutting ofa cake to mark thecelebration of the 100th

Women’s Day augured wellfor the happy event.

What got a twist in theensuing debate was a strangecoincidence. The three Yadavswho had held the Upper Houseto ransom by opposing the Bill, found for themselves a sectionof women students, ascomrades in arms, though theyopposed it for other reason. This was all the moreperplexing as almost allsections of women in

Parliament, cutting across partylines were vociferously infavour of the Bill.

True, they did have asizeable number of proponentsin the debate in the college too.But as exclaimed in French deje vu or ces ‘t la vie, they couldnot carry conviction.

Obviously, they could notfind any answer to the argumentof those who opposed the Bill, who saw in it an opportunityfor proxy male politicians whootherwise might not get theticket. They were equally notsure whether the right womenwould go to the hustings!

For sure, these werepoints that might not havecrossed the minds of many apolitician, including women. Here is something for them tothink afresh!

However, the heated debatecalmed down, both sidessticking on to their views sansrancor.
