Benefits of Bureaucracy- Rules and procedures are decided for

every work, leading to consistency in employee behaviour.

- Duties of each job are defined, thus eliminating overlapping of work.

- Selection and promotion procedures are based on merits, utilizing human resources to the maximum.

- Specialization in work.- If one person leaves then some other

occupies that place.

Disadvantages of Bureaucracy- Too much red tape and paper work.- Employees do not develop

belongingness to the organization.- Reliance on rules and regulations inhibit

initiative and growth.- Resistance to change and introduction

of new technology.

GilbrethsLife :- Frank Bunker Gilbreth

(July 7, 1868) became a bricklayer apprentice right after high school.- His wife, Lillian Evelyn

Moller (May 24, 1878) graduated from the University of California in 1900 and became the first working female engineer.

- Gilbreth and his spouse founded a

management consulting firm, Gilbreth Inc..

- They had 12 children, 2 of whom wrote “Cheaper By The Dozen”

- Gilbreth made many improvements in brick-layering.

- Reduced the number of motions made in laying a brick from 18 to 4 ½

for improving work methods- Serves 2 main purposes : Visual record of how things had been

done, emphasizing on on areas of improvement

• Webber and Gilbreths contribution gave management a unique shape and helped MNCs to understand the working environment for faster and smoother functioning of the firm
