Basic Management Functions
Planning – involves setting goals and determining how to reach them
Organizing – establishing a time frame in which to achieve the goal, assigning employees to the project, & determining a method for approaching the work
Controlling – the process of setting standards and evaluating performance
Decision Making Process
Define the problem Identify the options available Gather information and determine the
consequences of each option Choose the best option Take action Evaluate the results
Planning Realistic, comprehensive, & flexible Plans for the short- & long-range uses of
people, technology, and material resources Should be a written statement that identifies
resources that can be used to meet a given goal
Should be clear & direct Everyone involved should discuss the plan
Organizing Coordinated effort to reach a company’s
planning goals Assigning responsibility, establishing work
relationships, hiring staff to carry out the work, and directing the work of employees
Staffing involves recruiting, hiring, training, and evaluating workers
Controlling The process of comparing a plan with actual
performance Involves:
Setting standards Evaluating performance according to those

Purpose is to influence the behavior of employees so they are effective in helping achieve goals
