Run an extra mile

Research study indicates that in

general, people do not do their best!

What it means is “potential” is high but

“performance” is not that high.

Hardly 36% of the working

population knows – “why they do – what

they do.” We may not like this statement. But let us ask this

question to ourselves – “Am I doing all that I can do?” Honestly,

knowingly or unknowingly, we share number of “excuses” for

not doing a thing in time and “very well”. Stop for a moment.

Think. Is it happening? What can I do?

The answer is simple to understand and simple to

practice. Make a “commitment” to

yourself to run an extra mile. Start

getting up half an hour early. Yes. It

will give you the resource of 150 hours

per year.

Actually the time or money is not

the constraint – “Will to do” and “Commitment to Perform” is the

key to Success. Let us run an extra mile. Also, read the guest

editorial.

Happy reading.

Event of the Month

Successful launch of Astrosat

India entered an elite club of 6 nations after ISRO

successfully launched Astrosat in space on the

morning of the 28th September 2015.

Earlier ISRO had launched earth watching satellites

of all kinds. However, this time the Polar Satellite

Launch Vehicle (PSLV – C30) carried Astrosat, ‘The

telescope in the sky’, our first observatory in the space, positioned at about 650 km

from the earth. This will enable us to observe and study some of the deepest secrets

of the universe along with black holes & starbirths. PSLV – C 30 also carried 6

foreign satellites out of which 4 were from USA, which is an indication of the

perfection we have achieved in this field. This ‘telescope in the sky’ will allow clearer

observation without scatterling light and pollution in the earth’s atmosphere.

As compared to the 11,110 Kg Hubble telescope launched by NASA, 1513 Kg

Astrosat is just a minion. Nevertheless it is certainly another feather in cap for ISRO

after the successful launch of MOM (Mission On Mars) last year.

It is worthwhile to note that 70% of the control systems on the PSLV – C 30 have

come from about 150 big & small private industries. L & T, Godrej have been two of

the key contributors.

Earlier we had launched 28 satellites from abroad on foreign vehicles. However, it

goes to the credit of ISRO, the relentless efforts of our scientists, that we no more

use foreign launching stations. Moreover, we have put 51 foreign satellites in space,

which has earned the vital foreign exchange for the country.

The visionary leadership of Dr. Vikram Sarabhai, Prof. Satish Dhawan and our

former President Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam will go a long way in this endeavour. We

had tasted some failures earlier, but the leadership had taken full responsibility for

these setbacks, while giving credit to the fellow

scientists in respect of the successful launchings. It has

been specifically mentioned by Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam

in his writings.

If we compare ISRO budget of 7927 crores vis-à-vis

116573 Cr budget of NASA, this achievement is really

significant. We, therefore, salute our scientists and other staff at ISRO for this

commendable performance and look forward for many such

achievements in the days to come.

Guest Editorial of the Month

“Believe in Human Potential” I represent Human Resource Community. Time has come to realize its true potential and

value Human as Resource and unleash their natural potential to the fullest extent. If

managing Human Resource left to only Corporate, then we are limiting ourselves at thinking

level itself. Here I want to share some of my beliefs and real life experience that brought

inspiration while interacting with Social Leaders.

It all started with a Marathi book “Karyarat” by Dr. Anil Avachat. We can say, Karya-rat

means “Gainful Engagement”. Dr. Avachat narrated 6 real life stories of people who thought

beyond obvious, walk an extra mile, believed in Human Potential. Those are so inspiring that

I fall on love of those personalities because of their sheer determination to `Make A

Difference’ in society at large without (in again corporate terms) receiving “Package or

Position” like corporate.

From 10/10/10 the sowing of seeds took place. I thought if by reading this book is so

influential, let us meet at least few of them face-to-face and understand how they have done

“Impossible to I-M-Possible”. We started with first trip to Vidarbha & Marathwada, where in 9

days and 9 districts with help of my friend Laxman Kshirsagar and our Indica Xeta, travelled

nearby 2200 kms by 4 full & 4 half from 2 families. You may call it as social pilgrimage.

Started from Vridheswar >> Apegaon >> Paithan >> Sindkhedraja >> Lonar >> Shegaon >>

Amravati >> Wardha (Sevagram) >> Pavnar (Vinoba Ashram) >> Varora (Anandvan by Late

Dr. Baba Amte, Now Dr. Vikas Amte) >> Hemalkasa (LokBiradari Project by Dr. Prakash

Amte) >> Tadoba >> Gadchiroli (Dr. Abhay & Dr. Rani Bang) >> Renuka >> Nanded >>

Parli Vaijnath >> Ambejogai >> to Pune.

It was seeing is believing...Interactions with Dr. Vikas Amte, Dr. Prakash & Dr. Mandatai

Amte, Dr. Ranitai Bang were so inspiring that it has boosted our confidence that even at our

level we can do a bit. Later almost every once in six month, we started visiting one or the

other NGO and get inspired by their unconditional faith in People around Them i.e. believe in

untapped Human Potential and Realise it.

To name few..

1) Dr. Dapte’s Mauli Seva Pratishthan, Savedi, Ahmednagar - An orphanage for psychic

patients who were otherwise on street and lost hope to live their normal life. They have

started with 4-5 patients and recently 22+ patients not only recovering but also

recollecting / remembering about their families and they have handed over in-case

families came forward to take care of these patients.

2) Dr. Vijay Phalanikar’s Aapla Ghar, Donje, Sinhgad Base, Pune – After losing only

beloved son at age 13, Phalinikar Family became parents of 25+ children and 10+ Sr.

Citizen...What an excellent idea...A successful attempt to bind two poles, Grandson and

Daughters for Grandfather and Grandmothers!!!

3) Girish Prabhune’s Samarata Punrutthan Gurukulum, Chinchwad, Pune – Residential

school for 350+ Tribal children from age group 5 to 17 yrs. They not only complete

schooling but also learn their Tribal and other basic technical skills i.e. Warli, Pottory,

Painting, Plumbing, Pattern Making, Masonary, Ayurved Medicine (Danta-Manjan,

Adulsa Syrup, Amla Supari, Moravala etc)

Page 4: Management Digest Oct 2015

Page 4

4) Dilip and Pournima Kulkarni, Kudavale, Dapoli – They had influenced hundreds of

people to converse Energy and Preserve Environment. Even now stay in house with

Chulla, and floor maintained by cow-dung. They don’t use vehicle, mobile and whenever

Dilip ji visits Pune, he use only bi-cycle. Its unbelievable but true that this couple’s

monthly expenses are less than 3K/per month.

5) Dr. Raja and Renu Dandekar’s Pashan-Palvi, Chikhalgaon, Dapoli – This couple not

only believed in people, children potential but also transform the barron, rocky land into

lush greenery. They were inspired by Lokmany Tilak’s work and started their activities

from his birthplace – Chikhalgaon merely with 4 students in a cow’s shed 35 years back,

now 600+ students not only complete school education but also stand firm on their feet

due to vocational courses. First generation students turned out as an Entrepreneurs,

Industrialists, Doctors and remained connected and contributing to this noble cause.

This and similar shining examples given me and my family confidence to start venturing into

life’s mission – Can WE become partner in people development...Bringing New Dawn

“Ushahkal“ in one’s life through “Dnyan-Ni-Daan”. I had observed 3 important factors in

Realizing Human Potential. You will find this in any developmental project / process. First is

“Nidaan”, Diagnosis or Assessment phase, Second is “Dnyan”, Imparting Knowledge and

Last but not least “Daan”, Giving / sharing generously. From 2013, we have attempted to

combine it in ‘Dnyan-Ni-Daan’ social initiative. Encouraged friends, families to share “Used

but Usable” and ensured that will be shared with needy. Only Books, CDs Learning Material

is kept with us to convert our facility in Community Learning Resource Centre. It was started

with 100 books till date with 100 donors books collection crossed 2000 – From School books

to higher education – Medical, Engg, MBA, IT, Business to Science Magazines, Novels,

Spiritual, Yoga Literature available in Marathi, Hindi and English.

More than developing resources, we came across wonderful personalities. To remain

connected with common thread of positivity, energy and enthusiasm started Whats-app

group “WE” i.e. Wish Executors, We take pride in sharing that here collaboration and co-

operation flowing freely without really not knowing each others. In Jun’15 organized Women

Special Trek to Tail-baila, to develop confidence of housewives. Similarly for Weekend Semi

Payi Pandharpur Wari, our group of 9 took lessons of sharing and caring. We had been to

Paranda Tehsil to counsel suicide Farmer Families to bounce back. We have kicked off

program to develop English Conversation skills of Cab Drivers at Pune Airport. It’s a good

beginning and work in progress.

I believe in 1% principle...If all of us willingly share even 1% of our Tan or Man or Dhan (तन-

मन-धन), this can be a resource that will turn empty hands, heart and heads into value

adding human resource. In Japanese they consider Zero Waste is also a profit. Let Industry

focus on converting capital to profits through their HR. We as an individual HR Managers

can engage hundreds and thousands of empty minds to believe in themselves and partner

with them till start walking on their own.

Instead of giving Fish teach them Fishing. Becoming kingmaker is more

value adding than being a king!!!
