`What is the MCA?
The Management Consulting Association is the largest student-run
professional club at CBS, with over 500 members. The MCA exists to
educate its members about the consulting industry, and equip them with the
knowledge and skills required to join and excel in this industry.
What we do:
1. Partner with consulting firms to arrange recruiting events
2. Educate members on interview best practices – in both case and fit prep
3. Mentor students interested in consulting on their overall approach to
recruiting
4. Support practice cases via our case coaching system

`So what is Consulting?
Jeff’s Story
● Client: Large regional grocer
● Joined for conclusion of a 10-
week diagnostic. Also worked on
the proposal, and the project
itself once sold
● Analyzed both item-level
profitability and areas for cost
savings.
Chinmay’s Story
● Client: Integrated healthcare
system in Albuquerque, NM
● Pure strategy study to determine
if our client could remain viable
● From analysis of encounter-level
data to evaluation of financial
projections
`Are you doing this for the right reasons?
● Consulting offers the chance to work with bright people, gain experience
across industries, develop your leadership skills, and access top
management right away.
● However, be aware of what you’re getting into. Your life as a consultant
may at times include: Difficult teammates, unpleasant clients, unexciting
cases in an industry you don’t love, tedious modules, long stretches of time
away from your family in far flung cities, flight delays, and banking hours
without the banking pay.
To succeed in consulting, you need to genuinely love solving
problems, working in teams, and committing to make a client’s
problem your own. This is a client service business.

Key dates and reminders for 1st year recruiting
• Monday, 9/25: On-campus
recruiting starts
• Friday, 9/29 - 9 AM:
COIN Resume Book
deadline, MBA Career Fair
• Friday, 10/13: MCA
Resume Book deadline
• Friday, 12/1 – 9 AM: First
resume drop
• Monday, 1/8: 1st year
interviews begin
• We work with the CMC to limit the number of
overlapping events. That said, overlapping events
cannot be eliminated entirely due to the volume of
recruiting events
• The MCA weekly email will be distributed each
Wednesday and will include confirmed events
through the following Friday (i.e., 10-day outlook)
• Stay up-to-date by checking the MCA weekly
email, COIN, and OrgSync. Some events will not be
included in every communication (e.g., coffee chats)
• Each firm handles sign-ups for coffee chats
differently. Many use a Google Doc, but be ready to
use different tools
• Under no circumstances should you overwrite
another student’s name on a coffee chat sign-up
document. Honor code!
• Invite-only events will not be included in the MCA
weekly email (though we try to avoid conflicts when
these are known)
Key Dates Reminders
Important dates to remember
`What should I be doing now?
● Consider whether consulting is right for you – make use of the CMC,
Career Fellows, & second years who have interned in consulting
● Even if you are fully committed, try to understand what you want out of
consulting, and choose a parallel path that gets you there as well
● Sign up for our mentorship program, and develop a recruiting plan that
works for you – there is no “correct” way to approach recruiting
● Attend events that interest you or that you think will be useful – but do not
feel obligated to attend all of them
● Learn more about the differences between firms and their cultures
● If you are interested in offices outside NYC, connect with consultants
there
`
FIGURE
OUT A
PARALLEL
PATH.
The success rate is < 30%.
What else should I be doing now?
● About 225 people applied for
consulting internships last year. 70
got offers, across 22 firms.
● Cast a wide net within consulting
and outside
● Look for roles that require similar
skills and have similar job profiles
as consulting – e.g. roles in internal
consulting, corporate strategy
● Think about what you want out of
consulting, and let that guide you
`Six takeaways
• Recruiting for consulting is hard – remember this
• Approach networking season (and your summer) with
curiosity
• Use mentors to determine when to start case prep
• Practice smart prep – work on your weaknesses
• A great fit interview can salvage a mediocre case
interview, and a poor fit interview can ruin a great case
• Always have a parallel path
`
Use all resources available to you – inside and outside the MCA
General Interview Prep
• MCA Mentors • MCA case coaching
• CMC • MCA case demos
• Career Fellows • MCA fit sessions
• Executives-in-Residence • Case books
• Former summer interns • RocketBlocks
• Firm contacts • FastMath
• Firm web sites • Victor Cheng (book, math)
• Business press • Case in Point
` The case coaching program is an amazing display of community – it’s
one of your most valuable resources…
1. Find an appointment and immediately
find a room in Watson – update the
calendar invite accordingly.
2. Update the system and notify coach in
the event of cancellation
3. You’re responsible to find a venue and
ensure that the case happens
• These resources exist for the
betterment of the entire CBS
community
• Please treat this program as a
communal resource – strive to make it
better!

A new system for scheduling cases is coming soon! Look out for an email
from Sudipto Shome (VP of Technology) with your credentials and
instructions on how to use the new system.
It’s a Beta release – so write to us if you face any issues. In all likelihood, it’s
not a bug, it’s a feature ☺

`Parting thoughts - We are here for you throughout this process
• We want everyone who wants a consulting job to get one. If there is
something you need, let us know.
• Leverage MCA mentors, case coaches, and the Board
• Find someone at about your skill level who is interested in similar
firms, and work with her/him. They will spot flaws you might not see
yourself
• Numbers don’t matter! Focus more on improving your casing skills
than on reaching a target number of cases
• Help others along the way. Recruiting is challenging, and some
elements are beyond your control. Have patience with yourself and the
process.
• When you’re done, give back. Write for our casebook, run for a Board
position, or be a case coach next year.
