MAN’S PURSUIT FOR HAPPINESS

ECCLESSIASTES :1-2Bishop Genesis T. Udang

• 1Ki 3:5 The LORD appeared to Solomon one night in a dream and told him, "Ask me for whatever you want and I'll give it to you."

• 1Ki 3:6 So Solomon said: "You have demonstrated abundant gracious love to your servant David, my father, as he lived in your presence truthfully, righteously, and uprightly in his heart. In addition, you have kept on showing this abundant gracious love by giving him a son to sit on his throne today.

• 1Ki 3:7 Now, LORD my God, you have set me as king to replace my father David, but I'm still young. I don't have any leadership skills.

• 1Ki 3:8 Your servant lives in the midst of your people that you have chosen, a great people that is too numerous to be counted.

• 1Ki 3:9 So give your servant an understanding mind to govern your people, so I can discern between good and evil. Otherwise, how will I be able to govern this great people of yours?"

Page 4: Man pursuit for happiness

• 1Ki 3:10 The LORD was pleased that Solomon had asked for this,

• 1Ki 3:11 so God told him: "Because you asked for this, and you didn't ask for a long life for yourself, and you didn't ask for the lives of your enemies, but instead you've asked for discernment so you can understand how to govern,

• 1Ki 3:12 look how I'm going to do precisely what you asked. I'm giving you a wise and discerning mind, so that there will have been no one like you before you and no one will arise after you like you.

Page 5: Man pursuit for happiness

• 1Ki 3:13 I'm also giving you what you haven't requested: both riches and honor, so that no other king will be comparable to you during your lifetime.

• 1Ki 3:14 If you will live life my way, keeping my statutes and my commands, just like your father David did, I'll also increase the length of your life."

• So the source of Solomon’s wisdom was God. And In one manifestation of this wisdom was his view about man’s pursuit for happiness. And where he sourced it.

WHERE ARE WE SOURCING OUT OUR HAPPINESS?

• BY ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE

Page 8: Man pursuit for happiness

BY ACQUIRING KNOWLEDGE

• Ecc 1:12 I the Preacher have been king over Israel in Jerusalem.

• Ecc 1:13 And I applied my heart to seek and to search out by wisdom all that is done under heaven. It is an unhappy business that God has given to the children of man to be busy with.

Page 9: Man pursuit for happiness

• Ecc 1:14 I have seen everything that is done under the sun, and behold, all is vanity and a striving after wind.

• Ecc 1:15 What is crooked cannot be made straight, and what is lacking cannot be counted.

• Ecc 1:16 I said in my heart, "I have acquired great wisdom, surpassing all who were over Jerusalem before me, and my heart has had great experience of wisdom and knowledge."

Page 10: Man pursuit for happiness

• Ecc 1:17 And I applied my heart to know wisdom and to know madness and folly. I perceived that this also is but a striving after wind.

• Ecc 1:18 For in much wisdom is much vexation, and he who increases knowledge increases sorrow.

BY ENGAGING INTO DIFFERENT KINDS OF FUN

• Ecc 2:1 I said in my heart, "Come now, I will test you with pleasure; enjoy yourself." But behold, this also was vanity.

• Ecc 2:2 I said of laughter, "It is mad," and of pleasure, "What use is it?"

BY ENGAGING INTO VICES

• Ecc 2:3 I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine—my heart still guiding me with wisdom—and how to lay hold on folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life.

BY ACQUIRING PROPERTIES

• Ecc 2:4 I made great works. I built houses and planted vineyards for myself.

• Ecc 2:5 I made myself gardens and parks, and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees.

• Ecc 2:6 I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees.

• Ecc 2:7 I bought male and female slaves, and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks, more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem.

Page 17: Man pursuit for happiness

• Ecc 2:8 I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man.

• Ecc 2:9 So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also my wisdom remained with me.

Page 18: Man pursuit for happiness

• Ecc 2:10 And whatever my eyes desired I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil, and this was my reward for all my toil.

• Ecc 2:11 Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil I had expended in doing it, and behold, all was vanity and a striving after wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun.

BY WORKING HARD FOR THE FUTURE

• Ecc 2:17 So I hated life, because what is done under the sun was grievous to me, for all is vanity and a striving after wind.

• Ecc 2:18 I hated all my toil in which I toil under the sun, seeing that I must leave it to the man who will come after me,

• Ecc 2:19 and who knows whether he will be wise or a fool? Yet he will be master of all for which I toiled and used my wisdom under the sun. This also is vanity.

Page 21: Man pursuit for happiness

• Ecc 2:20 So I turned about and gave my heart up to despair over all the toil of my labors under the sun,

• Ecc 2:21 because sometimes a person who has toiled with wisdom and knowledge and skill must leave everything to be enjoyed by someone who did not toil for it. This also is vanity and a great evil.

BY HAVING A RIGHT RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD• Ecc 2:24 There is nothing better for a person

than that he should eat and drink and find enjoyment in his toil. This also, I saw, is from the hand of God,

• Ecc 2:25 for apart from him who can eat or who can have enjoyment?

• Ecc 2:26 For to the one who pleases him God has given wisdom and knowledge and joy, but to the sinner he has given the business of gathering and collecting, only to give to one who pleases God. This also is vanity and a striving after wind.
