• Assertive - standing up for self without denying rights, hurting, manipulating others

• Non Assertive - not speaking up for self• Passive Aggressive - non-confrontive,
sneaky behavior to control indirectly

• Involves expressing your legitimate rights, wants, needs, feeling
• May involve negotiation and compromise
• Creates honest,open relationships

Aggressive Behavior
• Seeks to dominate or control

• Generates negative, hostile feelings
• Causes resentment
• Non-verbal very important not only what you say but how you say it and actions
Passive-Aggressive Behavior
• Complaining• Ignoring• Sniping• Sarcasm• Forgetting• Procrastinating• Lateness• Sabotage
Assertiveness
• A Weapon or a Tool?
“I” messages
• Tend to be less threatening
• More effective in keeping communication open than “you” messages
• If someone is being unfair, Don’t take it personally-assume the best
• Get over it!
“I” Message Making an Assertive Statement
• 1) “I understand/know/can see…..”
