TAMIL CINEMA 75 -A LOOK BACK

THE AVM STORY - 78

By Our Staff ReporterMembers and friends of the

family of S. Vinoth Kumar (13)(resident of 17/32, Pillayar KoilStreet, T. Nagar), who died in aprivate hospital on UsmanRoad, T. Nagar, damaged someproperty claiming that negli-gence of the doctors had re-sulted in the boy’s death onAug. 21.

Vinoth was rushed to thehospital after suffering a sei-zure. He was a Std. 8 studentof M.C.N. School, T. Nagar.

It is said that Vinoth hadvisited the nearby AmmanTemple where a festival wasbeing celebrated. He suddenlycollapsed.

His father G. Sivaji works asa salesman in a textile show-

Boy’s death sparks attack on hospital

room and mother Vijayala-kshmi is a housewife. His elderbrother Kishore Kumar is a 2nd

year engineering student.Relatives said that no doctor

was present in the hospital andone arrived long after beinginformed over phone. After

examining Vinoth, he advisedthe family to take him to Gov-ernment General Hospital.

The boy died by the time hewas shifted to General Hospi-tal.

The relatives said that hadthey moved him earlier doc-tors in General Hospital mighthave saved his life.

Furious relatives and friendsshouted slogans against thehospital and broke the glasswindows and doors in the build-ing. Hospital staff informedPondy Bazaar police whorushed to the spot and pacifiedthe protesters.

Vinoth’s relatives later sentthe body to GovernmentRoyapettah hospital for post-mortem.

Sridhar soon promoted his own production unit ‘Chitralaya’which forged ahead to be a successful and noted film companywith many hits in its portfolio. He hit big time and created filmhistory with ‘Nenjil Ore Alayam’ (1962, Tamil). Again a melo-dramatic love triangle involving a doctor, his former sweet-heart, and her sick husband, now his patient, the film had manyinteresting features. It was shot in claustrophobic sets of aprivate nursing home, and the indoor photography was brilliantwith camera angles never before seen in South Indian Cinema.

The man behind the camera was Aloysius Vincent, one of thefinest ‘painters with light’ in Indian Cinema. The main playerswere Kalyan Kumar (an import from Kannada Cinema andexcellent actor), R. Muthuraman (new face from the stage, soon to be star), and C. A. Devika (a star in the making). Thefilm was shot in less than 30 days, a record for that day in IndianCinema and it raised many eyebrows!

Another major plus factor responsible for the enormoussuccess of the film was the melodious music composed by thefamous duo Viswanathan-Ramamurthy. Many songs becamehits and are remembered and hummed to this day.

After this sensational success, Sridhar forged ahead to be aforce in Indian Cinema. His major hits include ‘Dil Ek Mandir’(1963, Hindi remake of ‘Nenjil Ore Alayam’), ‘KathalikkaNeramillai’ (1964, Tamil), ‘Vennira Aadai’ (1965, Tamil, itintroduced the cult figure, clout-plus political leader and cur-rently Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, Jayalalitha to Tamilcinema), ‘Pyar Kiye Jaa” (1966, Hindi remake of ‘KathalikkaNeramillai’), “Urimai Kural” (1974, Tamil), “Seetha GeethaDaatithey”(1977, Telugu) and several others.

‘Bhai Bhai’ is essentially a family melodrama of two broth-ers, and the interesting and unusual element is that it is theelder brother who goes astray abandoning his loving dutifulwife and the younger brother brings him back to even keel andto the family fold to live happily thereafter. In India, especiallyin Hindu joint families, the first born, eldest brother, enjoys aspecial status and stature. So does his wife. Once the fatherdies he becomes the ‘pater familius’ and rules over the family. His word is law and others have to implicitly follow him. However, in recent years, with the break-up of the joint familysystem due to many reasons, sociological, economical, impactof western culture, mores and life style and others thesituation is different.

The reel-life brothers were played by real-life brothers, topstars of Indian cinema, Ashok Kumar and Kishore Kumar, andthis brilliant casting by Meiyappan added extra impact andinterest in the film.

Ashok Kumar Ganguly was perhaps the only movie star inIndia to enjoy the longest innings dating back to 1936 almostalways at the top. Born into a well-placed lawyer’s family inBhaghalpur, Bihar, he too studied law but gave up to land inmovies in Bombay as laboratory assistant with the famedBombay Talkies. Here he had a break as actor in the milestonemovie and film classic, ‘Achyut Kanya’ (1936) opposite the‘Grand Dame of Indian Cinema’, Devika Rani. The film dealtwith the controversial love affair between a high-born Brahminyouth (Ashok Kumar) and low-born ‘Untouchable’ girl (DevikaRani) and the complications that arise over such sociallycondemned relationship. However the success of ‘AchyutKanya” did not bestow stardom on Ashok Kumar.

As Devika Rani was not impressed with him, he was pairedwith Leela Chitnis and the films with her, ‘Bandhan’ (1941) and‘Naya Sansar’ (1941) made him a star. Then came “Kismet”(1940) and its phenomenal box-office record-creating successmade Ashok Kumar a big name and an all-India star. Sincethen he never looked back. He turned producer and directed afew films but he was always a star. His cinematic style ofunderplayed acting brought him fame and name and his longand impressive track record made him an icon of IndianCinema.

An evergreen person, his fine films include “Humayun”(1945), “Mahal” (1949), “ Samadhi” (1950), “Afsana” (1950),“ Deedar” (1950), “Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi” (1958), “ HowrahBridge” (1958), “Gumrah” (1963), “Oonche Log” (1965), “Aradhana” (1965), and many others.

NO HOLDS BARRED

Macaulay authored the ‘Indian Penal Code’ in tune with the thenlaw in England where about a hundred and fifty criminal offencessuch as a starving boy stealing a loaf of bread entailed the deathsentence. What friend Shakespeare did to English, Macaulay didto India on his special commission to exterminate the “Natives” bymaking the noose around the native necks the normal exit routefor the native criminal.

After centuries of pillage and plunder from which pastimes, theresident God of ‘Tiru Anantha Puram’ saved the princely state’s onelakh crores rupee worth of gold, which would have gone to Britishcoffers, along with the priceless Kohinoor to adorn the Britishcrown. Friend Macaulay’s Section 302 of the Indian Penal Codemade gallows-making carpenters the slave society’s sentinels.

The first thing free India should have done was the making of abon fire of the gallows erected in our jails at the stroke of midnight.Abolition of slavery is reflected in the abolition of cruelty by anyonein a free country.

The new powers who took over did not do it. They had their ownagenda which was not necessarily the making of humane laws oreven reading the Constitution, the world’s longest one. This tome iswhat we have given ourselves and Article 72 is the most civilisedof the 395 Articles as it enables the President to let a chap LIVE,whom the courts have condemned to the gallows. It is a constitu-tional one-upmanship of the President over and in equation withGod. I believe President Narayanan did not affix his dhobi mark tothe recommendations of the killing ministry rejecting the mercypetitions. Now comes the shocker from Pratibha Patil, a mother, nearest to goddess, who thumbed down the mercy petitions of 3Rajiv killers.

The President is not bound by the recommendations of thegovernment.

And, in view of the fact that the three have already spent 21 yearsin prison, living every minute in the shadow of death, she shouldhave allowed their tenure on Mother Earth co-terminus with theirnatural exit. Even Sonia, widowed by the gang, intervened to saveNalini. Sonia, take your Presidential throne of MERCY!

Members of Rotary Club of Madras Centenary Commemoration (8th Sector, K. K. Nagar)are staging street plays at different venues to create an awareness about the need for apollution-free environment.

S. Kannan (President) told Mambalam Times that the plays are being conducted by ‘Roots& Shoots’ team. He said that those interested in offering venues may contact him in phone93810 41949.
