• Community structure is largely influenced by: – Geomorphological features – Light penetration – Hydrodynamics
• Marine caves in Malta are highly variable
• Species diversity and richness change along the cave
gradient
• Sponges are one of the prominent taxonomic group in Maltese marine caves
