HISTORY OF
PEMBROKE
PARISHPembroke owes its origin to the Knights of St John of
Jerusalem who built two Watch Towers on its coast, which
served as a means of defence for the Grand Harbour due to
Pembrokes strategic position. However, the British Services
were instrumental in the development and for tication of
Pembroke. The rst principal barracks were constructed
between 1859 and 1862 and were named after Englands
Patron Saint - St Georges. Other barracks were built later and
named after Ireland and Scotlands Patron Saints - St Patricks
and St Andrews. Fort Pembroke was built between 1875 and
1878 to serve two defence purposes, namely to safeguard the
seaward approach towards the Grand Harbour and to defend
the right ank of the Victoria Lines. Later, Pembroke Battery
was built between 1897 and 1899 to serve the same purposes.
Various regiments served in Pembroke and the last soldiers
left Pembroke in 1979. During the Second World War, German
Prisoners of War were imprisoned in Pembroke and during
their stay, built a small chapel which served the needs of
the British Services. Since then, all the land which had been
purchased by the British Services on their arrival in Malta was
handed over to the Maltese Government. For a few years,
Pembroke was neglected but in the mid 1980s, the barracks
were converted into private residences, ofces and a holiday
complex. At the same time, the Government issued plots of
land for sale and the rst residents settled in 1986. During
the coming years, Pembroke is set to see a greater inux of
residents as a housing expansion programme is under way.
For several years, Pembroke was a military area and the
Catholic German prisoners of war built a small chapel close
to the army barracks as the second world war was nearing
its end. After the British Services left Pembroke, and the rst
Maltese residents moved in, this chapel was redecorated to
designs by Profs Richard England after a request f rom the St
Julians Parish Priest. When a new pastoral zone for Ibrag was
created, Pembroke started to form part of this zone until Palm
Sunday of 1998 when due to the pastoral needs of residents in
Pembroke the Church issued an Episcopal decree by which a
new zone was created dedicated to The Risen Christ. A Parish
Centre has been built and the new church is to be constructed
in the near future.

Fort Pembroke was built after a defence committee
recommendation in 1873. Work began on the 24th January
1875 and was completed in December 1879. The fort was
to serve two defence purposes namely to safeguard the
seaward approach to the Grand Harbour and to defend the

and free style shows were one can admire the talent that most of
our registered members have and all the effort that was put in the
construction of such a park. Proper activities are organised for the
young kids who start off at the age of six. Also more activities are
organised for the more experienced and elder members such as
competitions, fun rides etc.
Training sessions are also available, given by our experienced
instructors (both in BMX and in-line skating).
At the BMX track you can also nd a fully equipped skate park
built over the past summer, for the use of in-line skaters and
skateboarders.
We believe that we are giving todays kids a chance to expand their
experiences in such sports and also helping them stay off the roads
and away from the many hazards there are out there.
