‘Lest We Forget’ This is the title of the proposed World War One commemoration production to be held in St. Mary’s Church in November. We are hoping to include memories of your relatives from that period such as photographs, letters or even information that you can tell us about their part in the Great War. Some of this we may be able to include in the production whereas other material will be used as part of a display. This is a unique opportunity to remember the sacrifices that our ancestors made so please contact:

Strolling Around a Windmill Many of our regulars were otherwise occu-pied so a small but select group of us left Massingham on 18th May and met up with a couple of ‘Lynnites’ at Great Bircham. Our route took us up a wide track flanked by hedges smothered with blossom. After just over a mile we joined Peddar’s Way and followed this road for a mile or so. There were quite a few walkers on this glorious Sunday morning and most of them seemed to know our two members from Lynn; two were in fact their neighbours! As we strolled along and the temperature rose so did the debate heat up over the difference between Hawksbeard, Goatsbeard and An-drewsbeard as well as why some Hawthorn blossom was pink! Eventually we left Peddar’s Way and fol-lowed another broad, hedge-lined track un-til we came to the pumping station on the Bircham/Snettisham road. Here, three sub species Strollers called Carol for ‘Rescue Assistance’ while the other three continued for two more miles.

Eventually, we all met up at the King’s Head and enjoyed an excellent Sunday lunch. Our next walk will be at West Acre along the River Nar on Sunday 15th June.

Gert & Daisy........We are writing this from our sun loungers by the pool in Minorca! We hev decided that everywun here is competing to see who ken git the best tan – we are dewing well but the man from Africa seems to hev the edge on us at the moment. Yew don’t harf see sum funny sights. We’re glad Sid and Bert aren’t here cos sum of the ladies seem ter hev forgotten to bring thar bikini tops. The lifeguard hev just put out the green flag so we ken go fer a dip in a minit. Daisy thort Gert wus an advert fer whipped cream thother night – she put bubble bath in the bath and pressed a button on the side. It wus a jacoozi bath and she nearly disappeared – photos on request! We wud loike to thank awl those thet cum to our quiz – that were noice to see yew lot wus more clever than we thort. We raised £207 which wus more than enough to take the Coronation Club to Thaxters fer Afternoon Tea. Gert went fer drinks in the Orangery at the Old Legion Hall. She sed that were very noice but she didn’t go much on the nibbles – there wernt a Pringle in sight! She hev two birthday parties coming up. Zoe will be 30 and Danny will be 21 – con-gratulations to them both. Gert also hev her birthday in June but she ownt say how old she is. Daisy and Sid hev a special anniversary in the middle of June so maybe there’ll be another party then. Hopefully the sun will shine on the Open Gardens in June. Good luck to everyone in the InterVillage Games, especially Sid who is in the Archery Competition. We are sad to hear that while we hev bin away Arthur Allen hev again stood on his balls. This wus at the Tennis weekend which we understand was a great success. Apparently Bruce Riches got hisself in front of the Pelaton of bike riders coming through the village. He hed his bike hat on and they weren’t close enough ter see the state his bike wus in and they thort he wus in the lead and when he turned up the hall they followed him thinking he wus leading the way to sum drinks!! Once they got close enough they realised thar mis-take and went once round the car park and out agin. Bruce wernt aware of any of it! FITNESS FOR HEALTH EXERCISE MOBILITY SESSIONS

Tennis Open Day Over 80 people came to the Tennis and Multi-Sports Club's Open Day on Saturday 17th

May. The day kicked off with a lesson for adults who had never played much before. This was followed by forty children taking part in fun and games over the next three hours while parents and other adults learned how to play mini-tennis, checked out their speed of serve or practised with the automatic ball machine. (See pictures opposite) After a break for a BBQ and a glass of white wine, adults and juniors took to the courts for two sessions of 'Cardio Tennis' and then took it turns to see how many points they could score against our two coaches. The answer is: not many! Luca Ramasso (14) of Great Massingham said, “This was fantastic. I enjoyed every min-ute of it.” Jeremy Cameron, President of Norfolk LTA, spent much of the day with us. "Coming to Massingham is always an experience filled with joy. The village is beautiful, the ducks are contented and all the people are playing tennis! Massingham tennis is thriving. Much credit must go to the organisers but also credit should go to those taking part. All sorts of people of all ages, abilities and walks of life were there, enjoying their tennis, their cardio tennis, their fastest serve competition or simply their cakes. They were exercising and socialising - above all they were having a good time. This is surely what tennis is for." The Open Day was followed by a mixed doubles Open Tournament for thirty-two play-ers on the Sunday. The best weather of the year so far and copious quantities of Pimms from the bar helped to make it a very enjoyable day. In a very close final Malcolm Prue and Debbie Shiels were the winners. GT. MASSINGHAM PARISH COUNCIL AGM MAY 2014 CHAIRMAN’S REPORT.

Since the AGM in May 2013, Great Massingham Parish Council has held eleven meetings. An average of between six and seven councillors attended each meeting. The year started with seven councillors; there have been two resignations and four co-options resulting in our present full quota of nine members. Besides the councillors and, of course, the Clerk the meetings have usually been attended by our County and Borough Councillors and frequently by our PCSO. We have generally dealt with matters under the following headings: Planning, Highways, Village Maintenance, Allotments, Fishing, Public Transport, Youth Club, Parish Events, Projects and Tidiness. More specifically, we have tried to contribute to the consultation on the Borough Detailed Policies and Sites Plan ( the outcome of which has still not been declared) and scrutinised and criticised various planning matters of which we have been informed by the Borough, usually, it has to be said, without much weight being given to our council’s opinions even when supported by our Borough Councillor. We have followed the saga of the development of the King’s Lynn incinerator, thanks to the reports of our County Councillor and Borough Councillor. We have approved and ordered the installation of traffic speeding alert signs, extension of the parish lighting system along the Weasenham Road and tried to direct the county’s highways ranger system at maintenance problems in the village. We have negotiated a fresh contract with CGM for the cutting of the village greens (the result of which we have yet to see). We have had extra bins installed for public rubbish, dog litter and grit. We have arranged and support the regular inspection of the play park equipment. We have supported the formation and activities of the Allotments committee, the functioning of the Youth Club under Karen Reed and given assistance to the volunteers running the Biodiversity Project. We have tried to manage the Scotsman’s Pit fishing for the benefit of both the fishermen and the fish (sadly incurring some controversy) and have appointed a new fishing warden for the coming season. We have followed with admiration the efforts of certain members of the parish to keep and improve the public bus services for the village. We look forward to supporting the efforts of parishioners to produce and manage The First World War Commemorations. The undoubted pride which our inhabitants take in our beautiful village is fully justified because so many of them take part in helping to keep it so. I wish to express my thanks to everyone for doing so. Olaf Brun, Chairman.

Parish Council Report – May Meeting Seven councillors attended. Also present -County Councillor John Dobson, Borough Councillor Mike Tilbury, the Clerk and one parishioner. The Chairman gave his report for the year ending 31st March 2014. Mr. Brun was re-elected as Chairman and Mr. Cross as Vice Chairman. The Clerk presented the Financial Report for the year giving a small surplus of £1,015. These figures will now be subject to an internal audit. Biodiversity Project News and Next Working Party Unfortunately, out last working party was called-off because of rain. This means that parts of the site will be in urgent need of attention next time. A working party is planned for Saturday 7th June starting at about 10 am. If you are able to join us you can be assured of a very warm welcome. There will be tea, coffee, biscuits at half time. If you can bring a garden fork, hand fork, rake or pair of shears this would be helpful. In the meantime, it is a rewarding time to spend a few minutes walking around the site. Foxgloves and red campion are particularly in evidence and, for the sharp-eyed, there are more secretive gems such as ragged robin and the parasitic yellow rattle to be savoured. The yellow flag iris we planted two years ago have flowered well

for the first time and look particularly good against the backdrop of Norfolk reed (see the photograph left) . When walking through the wood you will see the two areas cleared of overgrowth for our primary school children to sow seeds of a range of woodland flowering species. Pairs of children took responsibil-ity of plots of about 6 sq metres which are marked with their names. Nearby, blue tits have nested in one small bird box although, for now, our three owl boxes remain unoccupied. Mike Jackson

Summer Fête and RAF Massingham Exhibition This will be held in the Church on the weekend of the 5th and 6th July.

There will be the usual stalls and refreshments but we would be very pleased for any suggestions for new attractions and also for any offers of help to run them. If anyone is able to make donations for the raffle, tombola and cake stalls this will be much appreciated. The stalls will be open from 11am until 2pm on Saturday. We hope to be able to organise some tower tours but numbers will be limited and names will be taken on the day. Please note that this is not suitable for anyone unfit or too young as the steps are steep and quite dark in places. If you are able to offer help in setting up or serving on the stalls please get in touch. The RAF Exhibition will be open from 10am both days closing at 4pm on the Saturday and 3pm on the Sunday. This is a magnificent exhibition compiled, over many years, by Sister Laurie who sadly died last year. In recent years Ant Robinson has preserved and further developed the exhibition. Many thanks to Ant for doing this. There is some new content this year and it is well worth spending some time browsing. The Church is very pleased to host the exhibition.

The Summer Fête weekend will close with a ' Songs of Praise' on Sunday 6th July at 3pm led by Rev J. Thomson.

CHURCH NEWS Christian Aid We are delighted that our special teas for Christian Aid raised £220. An excellent effort and many thanks to all who supported us. Special thanks to Margaret Bowes and Dorothy Shalom for organising the event. Churchyard We are very grateful to Mr Brun and his staff for the work in the churchyard. Many thanks also to those people who mow round the graves. We still have a problem on the third layer which has been very well main-tained by Mr P. Brown and Mr M. Skipper but is really too big for just two people. We really need another volunteer. I get positive comments about the bottom of the church-yard but, sadly, complaints about the upper area. If anyone is willing to help then please let me have your details and I can perhaps organise a meeting between us all.

Open Gardens The church will be open on Sunday 22nd June from 2pm for cream teas. Have a sit down and welcome rest as part of your tour of the gardens. Church cleaning This will be on the Saturdays 7th, 14th and 21st June from 10am and any help ill be appreciated. Produce Stall Saturday, 7th June at 9-30am in Church. There will be the usual cake and produce stall and refreshments. Any donations of cakes or produce will be appreciated. Wednesday Teas Held every Wednesday between 3pm and 4.30pm these are being well supported and a pleasant time is had by all. Everyone is welcome. It's a good opportunity to catch up with old friends or make new ones.
