The 17th Annual Harvard Invitational Ballroom Dance Competition 3

Dear Competitors,

Welcome to the 17th Annual Harvard Invitational Competition and Hanlon-Ford Ball. We hope this will be a weekend of excitement, inspiration, and most of all, fantastic dancing. Preparations have been taking place all year and we hope that our efforts will result in an enjoyable event for all.

The Invitational has grown considerably in the last few years. As of this writing, there are almost 700 competitors regis-tered, and we expect that number to rise with late registrations in the next week. The size and scope of the competition make it a veritable test of dancing ability and we wish you the best of luck through all of your rounds.

One of the highlights of our competition has always been the Hanlon-Ford Ball, which is named for one of our founding supporters. Radcliffe alumna Marguerite Hanlon passed away two years ago and was an incredible supporter of ballroom dancing, both internationally and here at Harvard. Her generosity started the team, gave us our first costumes, took us to our first events, and sowed the seeds for who we are today. We hope you will enjoy watching the final rounds of the Open levels of competition and be dazzled by the World-class performance given by Ieva Pauksena and Linas Koreiva.

The success of this competition depends heavily on the help we get from the ballroom community. We appreciate each of our professional judges for contributing their time. Their generosity makes the enjoyment of dancing and excitement of competing possible for all of us. We are also excited to be working with High Output this year. They have created the beautiful lighting for our Hanlon-Ford Ball, which we hope will heighten the experience of all the participants.

Running this competition is not a one-person job. We are so fortunate to have had a wonderful, dedicated team of com-mittee members whom have made this possible. The reliable Registrar Rose Yan has smoothly dealt with all registration and payment details. Our diligent Directors of Logistics Vera Mucaj and Ashley Grand have arranged the details of the ballroom, ordered and maintained our inventory of many supplies, and been charmingly creative in their ways of circum-venting difficult logistical issues. Our experienced Director of Business, Eleanor Birrell, has tirelessly fundraised for this event to make it financially viable. The resourceful arrangements of press-agentry and even occasional graphic design by Director of Publicity, Aleksandra Kuczmarska, has made advertising for the Invitational successful. Our gorgeous poster and program are the results of unflagging effort and sleepless nights by Program Designers Hannah Chung and Victoria Chernow. Our ambassador to the ballroom professionals joining us for this event, Judge’s Liason Masha Maystrovskaya, has been incredibly thorough in her arrangement for the logistics and comfort of the judges at this event. VIP Liaison Irina Danilova has been an exemplar in her enthusiasm and effort in creating a successful program for our VIPs to enjoy. It has not been an easy task of arranging the housing for over 100 competitors, but our Housing Coordinator Lindsay Liles’s meticulous preparation has fulfilled every request. A special thank you to alumus Timothy Li and MC Karl Kuryla for all of their efforts in, to just name a few areas, coordinating publicity efforts and supporting logistics with their know-how. Lastly, our Webmaster and Competitions Coordinator Emeritus Maulik Shah, for sharing his invaluable expertise and insights in all aspects of putting this competition together. There could not be a more heartfelt thank-you.

We are proud to have worked with all of these people and am eager to share with you the fruits of our labor this weekend. We have endeavored to anticipate and address every difficulty that may arise. However, in our preparation there may have been oversights, and we apologize for any inconveniences they may cause. After the competition, a link will be sent out to an online survey; please share with us what you liked, what you didn’t like, and alternate options which we could pursue. We appreciate your input into making our competition better, so that you and your team can enjoy it even more in the years to come.

Good luck this weekend, and most importantly: Happy Dancing!
