When the lungs are exposed to high concentrations of dust, toxic vapours, cigarette smoke, etc., the filtering mechanisms can become overloaded and damaged. Once they are damaged, various bacteria, viruses, etc. are more likely to grow in the lungs, causing infections such as pneumonia. That is why workers in dusty occupations (bauxite and coalminers, asbestos workers, flour mill workers, furniture makers, etc.) are known to be more susceptible to tuberculosis, bronchitis and other respiratory diseases than workers in non-dusty occupations

Health hazards in the workplace are a major concern for both employers and employees. It is important, though, to remember that hazardous materials only present a health hazard when they come into contact with your body. Hazardous materials can enter your body in three ways:

• INGESTION – through the mouth• ABSORPTION – through the skin, eyes• INHALATION – through the lungs

The most common route of exposure for most health hazards is INHALATION. This includes breathing in dust, fumes, oil mist, and vapors from solvents and various gases.

THE BREATHING PROCESSTo better understand how harmful substances can enter your body by inhalation, let‘s take a closer look at the breathing process. Whenever you take a breath, oxygen rich air is taken into your body through your mouth and nose, goes down your windpipe and into the lungs. In your lungs, there are tiny air sacs called alveoli. These delicate air sacs then transfer the oxygen from air into your blood. At the same time the  oxygen is being absorbed into your bloodstream, carbon dioxide is being transferred from your  bloodstream into the air sacs. When you breathe out, you are ridding your body of  gaseous wastes.

The risk caused by airborne contaminants mainly depends on:

• The physical, biological and chemical properties of the contaminants, their size and form • Concentration in the ambient air and time of exposure• Volume of inhaled air (the more rapid respiration, the more airborne contaminants are inhaled)

WHAT ARE TYPES OF AIR CONTAMINANTS THAT WE CAN INHALE?

AIRBORNE PARTICLES - DUSTS, FUMES AND SMOKE

Workplace processes can generate tiny solid particles which are light enough to float in the air, and these are referred to as dusts, fumes and smoke.

DUSTS are polydisperse solid aerosols*, generated during processing of organic and inorganic substances. Solid particles can be mineral, metal, coal, wood or crop dust, as well as fibres. They are usually heavy enough to settle slowly to the ground.

FUMES are very tiny solid particles which can remain airborne that are formed when a heated metal has evaporated in the air and then condensed back to a solid form. This occurs in welding and soldering operations.

SMOKE is made up of small particles produced by the incomplete combustion of any material that has carbon in it. Smoke is often produced during processes that require high heat or burning as part of the manufacturing process.

(* AEROSOL – a substance consisting of very fine solid particles or liquid droplets suspended in a gas.)

GASES AND VAPOURS

Workplace chemicals can enter the air in a number of different ways. Simple evaporation is probably the most common way. Organic solvents, such as toluene, methyl ethyl ketone (MEK) or alcohols, generally evaporate more rapidly than water, acids or caustics, though this is not always the case. GASES are materials that become airborne at room temperature. Gases may have an odor, but many do not. Some gases can be seen, but again, others cannot. Gases may be heavier than air, or lighter than air, but in either case, can travel for great distances undetected.VAPOURS are substances that are created when a solid or liquid material evaporates. Materials that evaporate easily at room temperature include paint thinner or solvents.

HEALTH HAZARDS CAUSED BY AIRBORNE PARTICLES

Our respiratory system has very effective mechanisms for filtering out normal pollutants from the air we breath in.

Filtering system in the nose and mouth prevent large foreign particles (like coarse dust) from getting into the body, where they can cause health hazards.

NON-RESPIRABLE particles (ussualy in excess of 100 µm) can be filtered out of the respiratory system by the upper respiratory tract (mouth, nose, windpipe)

RESPIRABLE particles in the size range less then 10 µm, are difficult to trap and can reach the delicate parts of the lungs where they can cause serious respiratory problems .

How far the particles break through depends on their size – the smaller the size the more harmful they are.

SIZE COMPARISON OF VARIOUS TYPES OF AIRBORNE POLLUTANTS

Page 5: MALINA - Safety s.r.o. was founded in 1990 by Mr. Ctirad ...€¦ · MALINA - Safety s.r.o. was founded in 1990 by Mr. Ctirad Malina as a wholesale company with welding equipment.

Gases and vapours can also enter the body through the respiratory system. Some chemicals have damaging local effects on the lungs, others are absorbed into the bloodstream and have potentially damaging effects on various target organs. Target organs are those parts of the body that particular chemicals always affect, the central nervous system (brain and spinal cord), the heart, lungs, kidneys and liver.

A. Local effectsOnly a localized effect on one part of the body - where the hazardous agent comes into contact with or enters the body. Some substances like ammonia, chlorine, welding fumes and exhaust fumes can cause local irritation to the lungs when they are inhaled.

B. Systemic effectsSystemic effects can occur in the blood when the substance is absorbed into the bloodstream, and in the organs that either store the toxic material (such as the bones and the brain), neutralize it (such as the liver), or remove it from the body (such as the kidney and bladder). A typical systemic effect in the blood is anaemia (a shortage of red blood cells) which can be caused by a number of chemicals, including: lead, beryllium, cadmium, mercury compounds and benzene. Benzene can damage the cells that form blood, leading to leukemia. The liver can be damaged by toxic substances because it tries to break down many of them once they have entered the body. Some chemicals known to damage the liver are: benzene, DDT, dioxane, phenol and trichloroethylene. Vinyl chloride monomer, used in the plastics industry, is known to cause a rare form of liver cancer. The kidneys and bladder also can be affected by many toxic substances because they are major routes of exit out of the body.

C. Acute effectsAcute effects are usually immediate, obvious, short-term responses to exposure to a hazard. They can be localized to one part of the body, or they can be systemic.

D. Chronic effectsChronic effects develop over time. Chronic conditions can result from a short exposure, or from repeated contact with a substance or work process. Like acute effects, chronic effects can be localized to one part of the body (such as chronic lung disease which develops over years), but they can also be systemic.

EFFECTS OF TOxIC SUBSTANCES

Although some of the medical terms may be unfamiliar to you, it is important to understand the body‘s reaction to toxic materials. Toxic substances can cause four types of effects on the body: local, systemic, acute and chronic.

Occupational lung diseases are the number one cause of work-related illness in terms of frequency, severity, and preventability. Most occupational lung diseases are caused by repeated, long-term exposure, but even a severe, single exposure to a hazardous agent can damage the lungs. Occupational lung diseases are preventable !

WHAT ARE THE SYMPTOMS OF AN OCCUPATIONAL LUNG DISEASE?

The following are the most common symptoms of lung diseases, regardless of the cause. However, each individual may experience symptoms differently. Symptoms may include:

• coughing

• shortness of breath

• chest pain

• chest tightness

• abnormal breathing pattern

The list contains examples of chemical substances or processes were workers may be exposed to the concentration level that cause various adverse effects in respiratory system.

POINTS TO REMEMBER ABOUT INHALATION

• More hazardous agents get into your body by inhalation than by any other route of entry.

• Although your body filters many of the normal pollutants from the air you breathe, it cannot eliminate each type of contaminant.

• Small particles are difficult for the body to eliminate and can get deep into the lungs where they can cause respiratory problems.

• Workers in dusty occupations are more susceptible to respiratory diseases than workers in non-dusty occupations.

• Chemicals, in their various forms, can be inhaled and damage various target organs as well as the lungs.

• It is important to notice warning signals, such as smelling chemical odours. It is also important to notice if you stop smelling a chemical odour that you used to smell - you may be “accustomed” or used to the smell and do not know that you are being exposed to the chemical.

The personal protective equipment is divided into two main groups according the source of air – air purifying or air supplying

AIR PURIFYING

Negative pressure systems

DISPOSABLE PARTICULATE (DUST ) RESPIRATORS – designed for protection against low concentrations of dust, mists, pollen, animal dust etc. Advantages: Lightweight, disposable, relatively comfortable, and inexpensive.Limitations: Minimal protection due to poor sealing properties. They cannot be used by personnel with facial hair which comes between the respirator and the skin.

RE-USABLE HALF MASK

Air purifying half masks have a rubber face sealing part which fits over the nose and under the chin.Exchangeable cartridges and filters are designed to provide protection against different types of air contaminants.Advantages: Relatively lightweight and offer good protection against many contaminants.Limitations: Use is limited by the type and capacity of the filters - can not be used neither in areas with high concentrations of contaminants nor in oxygen-deficient atmospheres. Difficult breathing because of the additional effort is needed to breath through the filters. Eye protection is not provided. Although the proper and tight fitting is essential, many factors may effect the face sealing.

RE-USABLE FULL FACE MASK

Air purifying Full Face Masks work on the same principal as the half-mask respirators described above. The facepiece extends protection around the entire face, covering the eyes, nose, chin and mouth. Advantages: Full face respirators are used where a higher level of respiratory protection is needed or where eye and face protection is required.Limitations: Full face masks are heavier than half-masks and often less comfortable for the wearer. Cannot be used for all types of air contaminants and are limited by the type and capacity of the filters and cartridges used. They cannot be used in oxygen-deficient atmospheres. Breathing may become difficult because of the additional effort is needed to breath through the filters.

Positive pressure system

PAPR – POWERED AIR PURIFYING RESPIRATORS

The most advanced group of personal protective equipment provides a high level of protection even for long lasting applications.Battery powered portable fan unit which drives the air through a particulate or chemical filter and blows it to the facepiece. Full and half mask are available as well as wide variety of hoods and helmets.

Advantages: Major advantages are derived from the positive pressure provided by the fan forcing air into the facepiece, hood or helmet. This eliminates difficulty in breathing provided by the negative pressure respirators and reduces the importance of a good facial fit.

Limitations: Higher purchase price and maintanance. Use is limited by the life time of the battery and fan. Can not be used in oxygen deficiency environments (<17%).

AIR SUPPLYING

AIRLINE SYSTEMS

These respirators provide clean, fresh air to the user from a stationary source such as a compressor or compressed air cylinders.Full face mask and half mask are available as well as wide variety of hoods and helmets.Advantages: Airline respirators may be used for long periods and provide a high degree of protection from a variety of air contaminants. They provide minimal breathing resistance and discomfort, are light weight, moderate initial cost and low operating costs.Limitations: Unexpected loss of the air source eliminates all protection to the user. Air must be delivered to the mask or hood through a hose which can be awkward to maneuver and may easily tangle or crimp.Applications: These respirators can be used for protection from the most of all air contaminants.

SCBA – SELF CONTAINED BREATHING APARATUS

SCBA‘s provide the user with clean air from a high pressure cylinder carried on the wearer‘s back. They are equipped with a full face piece and are operated in the pressure demand mode. SCBA‘s provide the maximum degree of protection available from airborne contaminants.Advantages: Users carry their air supply with them allowing comparatively free movement over an unlimited area.Limitations: SCBA units are expensive to purchase and maintain; require the wearer to carry heavy weight of equipment on his back, and provide no more than 40 minutes of continuous use. Personnel with facial hair which comes between the respirator sealing surface and the wearer‘s face cannot use SCBA equipment.

The CleanAIR® canister filters range offers a wide selection of filters for various respiratory tasks. Highest quality filter media and well mastered in-house technology of filters production ensure the highest quality you need. Our filters are fully EN approved according to the following standards (EN 143:2001/A1, EN 12941/A2, EN 12942/A2, EN 14387. The combined and particle filters are marked „R“ for re-usable. The CleanAIR® filters are manufactured with the thread RD40x1/7“ in accordance with EN148-1.

Particle filters trap solid and liquid aerosols (dusts, smoke, fumes, mists, bacteria, viruses and radioactive particles) – contains only the particulate filter.

Gas filters protects you against hazardous gases and vapours – contains only the activated carbon.

Combined filters protects you against both gaseous and particulate contaminants – contains both layers (activated carbon and particulate filter)

The CleanAIR® canister (cartridge) filters housing is made of high durable plastic, the inner content consist of two different parts.

Activated carbon removes the chemical agents such as gases and vapors from the contamined air

P3 class filter media removes solid and liquid particles from the contamined air

ACTIVATED CARBON - ACTIVATION

Carbon is activated by breaking down the carbon structure with steam or chemicals. This creates many fine channels, known as pores, in the carbon structure. These pores are finely grained so the polluting molecules can first penetrate them and then bond with the surface

Depending on the level of activation, activated carbons have an active internal surface area ranging from 750 m2/g to 1,600 m2/g. The activated carbons may be pure carbons (used for A type filters) or carbons impregnated with various impregnants giving e.g. oxidizing, acidic or alkaline properties. The purel activated carbon removes many odorous substances from the air, including organic solvents or poisons – adsorption. However, some common gaseous chemicals such as cyanides or ammonia are adsorbed poorly, or not at all. The activated carbon must be impregnated to eliminate these poisons. To do this, the large internal surface is coated with reactants for these poisons –chemisorption.

18 19

A rechargeable battery allows operation up to 10 hours. Intuitive control panel with well-arranged pictograms makes the unit user-friendly.

Another group of chemicals can be removed with catalysts (for example phosphines, etc.). In this case, the activated carbon is coated with these catalysts. A catalyst promotes a chemical reaction without its own properties changing. Its sole function is to facilitate the reaction.

GAS AND VAPOUR FILTRATION PRINCIPLE

Page 11: MALINA - Safety s.r.o. was founded in 1990 by Mr. Ctirad ...€¦ · MALINA - Safety s.r.o. was founded in 1990 by Mr. Ctirad Malina as a wholesale company with welding equipment.

PARTICLE FILTRATION PRINCIPLE

The particle’s filter ability to trap airborne particles depends on physical and mechanical properties of the filter media such as interception, inertial impaction, diffusion and electrostatic attraction.

The material used for particle filtration is made of sheets of randomly arranged glass microfibers with various diameter 1-10 µm.

INTERCEPTION

Small and light particles are able to be carried past the fibers by the stream of air. If the particle gets close to the fiber (the particle’s center gets closer to the fiber than the particle’s diameter) it colides with the fiber, gets caught and sticks to it. The bigger the particle, the more effectively interception works.

INERTIAL IMPACTION

For heavier particles the moment of innertia is to big to follow the airflow passing around the fiber. These particles keep following their original path and therefore impact the fiber. Efficiency of inertia increases with the speed of the air flow, the particle size and decreasing fiber size.

DIFFUSION

Particles smaller than 1 μm in size don’t follow the path of the airflow past fibers. They are influenced by the Brownian motion. When touching the fiber they adhere to it. The possibility that these particles are traped by the diffusion principle increases with a decreasing speed of the air flow and decreasing particle and fiber size.

ELECTROSTATIC ATTRACTION

After fiber contact is made, smaller particles are retained on the fibers by a weak electrostatic force.

PARTICLE FILTERS European standard EN 143 defines the following classes of particle filters that can be attached to a face mask (full face mask or half mask)

CLASS EFFICIENCY SUITABILITY

MAX PERMITED PENETRATION OF TEST AEROSOL

NaCl (airflow 95 l/min)

P2 MEDIUM Against solid and liquid hazardeous particles 6% 6%

P3 HIGH Against solid and liquid toxic particles, radioactive particles, bacteria and viruses 0,05% 0,05%

Particle filter lifetimeThe operation lifetime mainly depends on concentration of particulate contaminants on the workplace, humidity and used airflow. The particle filters get clogged with particles and with humidity. Immediatelly replace your filter when the breathing resistence has increased. Restriction of use When used against radioactive substances or bacteria and viruses is recommended for single use only !

WELDING SAFETY Welding is the most common method of joining metals in industry today. When welded, two parts of similar metals are melted together. Once completed, the welded joint is as strong or stronger than the pieces from which the joint is formed. Welding covers a temperature range 800ºC - 1635ºC.General hazards of welding include impact, penetration, harmful dust, smoke, fumes, intense heat and light radiation. The proper personal protective equipment can protect you from these hazards !

WELDING HEALTH HAZARDS

36 37

Chemical agents

Generally, welding fumes and gases come from the base material or filler material; paints and coatings on the metal and covering the electrode; shielding gases; chemical reactions from arc ultraviolet light and heat; process and consumables; and contaminants in the air, such as vapors from cleaners and degreasers.

Welding fume exposure in the workplace is a serious occupational hazard and can cause numerous health problems. (for more Info see „Health hazards“ chapter). The highest risk factors include ozone, chromium particularly in its hexavalent state (Cr 6+ ), nickel (potential carcinogens), cadmium and lead.Cadmium in welding fumes can be fatal in a short time. Ultraviolet radiation given off by welding reacts with oxygen and nitrogen in the air to form ozone and nitrogen oxides, which are deadly at high doses, irritate the nose and throat, and cause serious lung disease.Ultraviolet rays can react with chlorinated hydrocarbon solvents, such as trichloroethylene; 1,1,1,-trichloroethane; methylene chloride, and perchloroethylene, to form phosgene gas, a deadly substance, even at small amounts. The symptoms of exposure, dizziness, chills, and cough usually take five or six hours to appear.

One single welder produces 20-40 g fumes per hour which corresponds to about 35-70 kg of weldimg fume per year. (The OEL of general welding fume is 5mg/m3.)

Physical agents

Electric arc and laser welding emit ultraviolet (UV), visible light and infrared (IR). Gas welding and gas cutting emit visible light and IR radiation. The potential effect of radiation on the body depends on the type and intensity of radiation, the distance you are from it and the duration of exposure.

ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is generated by the electric arc in the welding process. Skin exposure to UV can result in severe burns, in many cases without prior warning. UV radiation can also damage the lens of the eye. Many arc welders are aware of the condition known as „arc-eye,“ a sensation of sand in the eyes. INFRARED RADIATION  Exposure to infrared radiation (IR), produced by the electric arc and other flame cutting equipment may heat the skin surface and the tissues immediately below the surface. Except for this effect, which can progress to thermal burns in some situations, infrared radiation is not dangerous to welders. Most welders protect themselves from IR (and UV) with a welder‘s helmet (or glasses) and protective clothing. INTENSE VISIBLE LIGHT  Exposure of the human eye to intense visible light can produce adaptation, pupillary reflex, and shading of the eyes. Such actions are protective mechanisms to prevent excessive light from being focused on the retina. In the arc welding process, eye exposure to intense visible light is prevented for the most part by the welder‘s helmet. However, some individuals have sustained retinal damage due to careless „viewing“ of the arc. At no time should the arc be observed without eye protection.

What is an Occupational Exposure Limit – OEL?

The Occupational Exposure Limit (OEL) is the safety level for dust, fumes, gases and vapours, below which you may not need to wear respiratory protective equipment. For each known hazard, the Health & Safety Executive or equivalent national authority has set a safety limit, a concentration above which the user need to wear respiratory protective equipment. These safety limits are reviewed regularly and tend to increase rather than decrease.

IDLH - Immediately dangerous to life and health

As a general rule, the lower the OEL, the higher the toxicity of the hazard.

The OEL can be expressed as a long term limit relating to exposure by the operator for the 8 hours.  This is more realistic of a working shift and is, therefore, the more common OEL.  Short term limits relate to an exposure of 10 minutes in a day. Both are time weighted averages and take the average concentration over the 8 hour or 10 minute period.

How is the OEL expressed?

Particulate or fume - mg/m3  : which means that the concentration is measured by weight in milligrams per cubic metre of air.  This is the weight of dust in this volume of air.Gases which have no significant weight are measured in parts per million.  Ozone  = 1 ppm : which means that the safety limit of ozone is 1 molecule of ozone in 1 million molecules, which is equivalent to .000001%.

Protection Factor - What does this mean?

This is the concentration above the Occupational Exposure Limit that the respirator will protect up to.

For example :

The OEL of general welding fume is 5mg/m3. A respirator with a protection factor of 10 will provide protection up to10 x 5mg/m3= 50mg/m3 provided that 50mg/m3 is still below the IDLH of the given substance.A respirator with a protection factor of 50 will provide protection up to 50 x 5mg/m3= 250mg/m3 provided that 250mg/m3 is still below the IDLH of the given substance.

Nominal Protection Factor

This is the protection factor assigned by the European Standard Authorities to the class of respirator.A Class of 2 powered respirator with a hood (TH2) under EN12941 has a nominal protection factor of 50.A Class 2 disposable face mask (FFP2) under EN149 has a nominal protection factor of 12.5.

EN 12941/A2

This European Standard specifies minimum requirements for powered filtering devices incorporating a helmet or a hood with gas, particle or combined filter(s). It does not cover devices designed for use in circumstances where there is or might be an oxygen deficency (oxygen less than 17% by volume). Also it does not cover respiratory protective devices designed for escape purposes.

EN 12942/A2

This European Standard specifies minimum requirements for power assisted respiratory protective devices which incorporate a full face mask, half mask or a quarter mask together with gas, particle or combined filter(s). It does not cover devices designed for uses in circumstances where there is or might be an oxygen deficiency (oxygen less than 17% by volume). Also, it does not cover respiratory protective devices designed for escape purposes. It must protect the user even if the PAPR is off.
