Patent Drafting Workshop ThotBox Training Centre 27 July 2016 So you’ve got a good idea, a really good one, it may not be the light bulb, or microchip, but you’ve got that good feeling that it could be the next big thing. In a world full of copycats, you are determined to ensure that your idea is protected. So the best thing you can do is to have it patented. You can save thousands of ringgit in patent attorney fees and you can prepare and file the patent application when you want without having to rely on fitting into a patent attorney’s schedule or paying rush fees. PlaTCOM Ventures Sdn. Bhd, a wholly owned subsidiary of Agensi Inovasi Malaysia organised a Patent Drafting Workshop in collaboration with MINDS. The workshop was held at Thotbox Training Centre, Damansara Intan Business Park on 27th July 2016. A total of 25 participants from both the private and academic sectors attended this workshop which was designed to provide fundamental skills in drafting patent applications and an understanding of the patenting requirements and procedures. The workshop was given by Intellectual Property experts, Ms.Biruntha Mooruthi and Ms. Elina Isa. Participants were given hands-on experience in drafting patent claims. The one day workshop was very informative and interactive. At the end of the workshop participants were awarded certificate of attendance.

MUST Inventors Week Malaysia University of Science & Technology (MUST) 1-8 August 2016 Kelana Jaya The Malaysia University of Science and Technology, a chapter of MINDS had its MUST Inventors Week in August. The MUST Inventors Club organised workshops and presentations for its members. The Makers Workshop was on the hardware of the Arduino microcontroller, conducted for Vietnamese students . The students were introduced to the digital and analog input/output pins and also learnt interfacing with sensors and actuators. They practiced microprogramming the C language for reading the sensors, and were also introduced to controlling servo and stepper motors, as the hardware actuators. In the Design Workshop, the students learnt electronics design essentials such as Ohm’s Law, potential dividers and current limiters. They were then required to design a simple gadget with sensors and actuators, interfacing with the Arduino Uno board. This made them realise that designing is hard work and requires perseverance in the face of difficulty. On the last day, the students gathered to present their innovations. Professor Dr P Sellapan, Provost of MUST, gave the opening speech, followed by a keynote presentation “My Journey of Innovation” by Dr Yip Chi Kiong, in which he explained the 3 keys to innovation: Get the idea, make it work, and present it. This was illustrated with a few innovations that had won awards from the Malaysia Toray Science Foundation (MTSF).

Arts & Creativity Exhibition 9 September 2016 Sunway University

The Arts and Creativity Exhibition (ACE) was held for the second time on 10 September 2016, at Sunway University, Jeffery Cheah Hall 1. There were a total of 95 submissions, of which 50 were shortlisted for the exhibition. The objectives of ACE were two-pronged: to improve English proficiency and also to develop creativity in school children. The theme for this year’s competition was “A Thing of Beauty is a Joy Forever – showcasing Malaysian Flora and Fauna”. Malaysia has many unique plant and animal species, and it is our hope that through this year’s theme, there will be greater public awareness of and inculcation of love for them, our living treasures.

Earlier the year, in April, MINDS held workshops for school teachers to encourage them and their students to explore creative possibilities in various ways. These workshops were run successfully hence, we saw greater participation and improved quality stories and illustrations from the primary, secondary as well as tertiary students. There was a feeling of great enthusiasm and eagerness as teachers, parents and students milled in the exhibition hall wondering who had won in the competition. The event started with Tan Sri Ong, President of MINDS, giving the welcome speech, followed by Prof Harold Thwaites, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Sunway University, who spoke on the importance of creativity. Following that, the winners for the primary, secondary and tertiary levels were then announced. First prize winner for the primary level, Tham Yuan Yi, broke into tears when her name was announced for her essay “Bravery”, the illustration done by Yvette Y E Lim. Special awards for writing and illustration were also announced.

Two eminent scientists then spoke on Butterflies and Rafflesia. Academician Prof Emeritus Dr Yong Hoi Sen, a geneticist, zoologist and lepidopterist spun a tale on “Beauty and the Beast” referring to butterflies and moths. It was a very interesting and colourful (beautiful slides on various butterflies and moths) presentation about the differences between the butterfly and moth. According to Prof Yong, butterflies are day fliers and generally rest with their wings folded upright above their bodies. Their antennae are threadlike with tips distinctly or gradually thickened to form a club. On the other hand, moths are generally nocturnal in habit and rest with their wings held in a horizontal or in a roof-like position. Their feelers are feathery or threadlike but without a club.

The next speaker was Professor Emeritus Dato Dr Abdul Latiff Bin Mohamad, from the Faculty of Science and Technology, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia. He talked about the little known facts of Rafflesia, which flowers are the world’s largest, and which has become an iconic genus for conservation programmes in South-east Asia because of its rare distribution and complex biology.

Finally, it is our hope that at the end of the day, those who attended ACE 2016 will go away with a feeling of wonder over, not only the beauty and distinctiveness of our Malaysian flora and fauna, but also the remarkable creativity of our Malaysian students.
