e are only one race in to the new Formula 1 season but the signs of another Mercedes domination were clear to see at Albert Park.

Pre-season testing highlighted the Silver Arrows would head to Albert Park with an

advantage, but the extent of the gap over the rest has sent an ominous message to the paddock.

In qualifying Mercedes’ nearest rivals Williams were 1.4 seconds off the pace, while the three pointed star went on to win the Australian Grand Prix by more than half a minute.

While Mercedes has developed further, in some cases, Red Bull in particular, have gone backwards in their development.

As the F1 circus heads to Malaysia the fall out from Australia is still ringing in the ears of the sport’s bosses.

Despite Red Bull’s call for engine equalisation and threat to pull out of the sport, it will not halt Mercedes charge on the short term.

All eyes will once again be on Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg in Sepang with the latter desperate to summon a response to his team-mate’s domination in Australia.

With Mercedes’ supremacy, a reaction from Rosberg will be needed to add spice to the battle for victory.

Although Mercedes clearly possess an advantage,

Ferrari showed signs that the Maranello team could be the world champion team’s challengers this year.

Both new recruit Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen displayed speed helped by a much improved power unit. With a wealth of resources at their disposal, it appears Ferrari will be a team on the rise this year.

Another team on the up in terms of performance is Sauber who impressed in Australia once the their court room drama came to an end. Boosted also by Ferrari’s developed engine, the Swiss team along with Toro Rosso emerged as the early surprise packages of 2015.

In the opposite direction, McLaren is set to grab headlines once again having been more five second adrift of the pace in Australia.

Honda’s Motorsport boss explained that the team were forced to detune the engine because of fears temperatures experienced in Melbourne would cause a power unit failure.

With increasing temperatures due in Sepang, it will be interesting to see how McLaren will cope.

Can anyone catch Mercedes?

Like Australia, managing fuel consumption in Sepang will be quite a challenge. Of the six main components of the PU, the ICE will

be under the most pressure in Sepang. In the past, the humid- ity has made Sepang a little bit easier on engines since power comes down as the water content in the air increases. With a turbo engine, however, the air intake is controlled at all times regardless of ambient conditions, so those two long straights will really start to hurt.

The two long straights of over 1km each give plenty of oppor- tunity for the MGU-H to be recharged. The heavy braking points of the hairpin (Turn 15), first corner complex and the mid to low speed corners in the third sector should allow the MGU-K to recover energy to feed back into the battery.

One of the hardest of the year for the Power Unit due to the long straights. The high air temperature is usually a concern as we have to choose the correct cooling level. The high chance of rain could also make the cars difficult to control due to the increased torque and lack of grip so the focus will be on good driveability without too much wheelspin.

A new deal between Fox Sports and Network Ten that will see just 10 Formula 1 races shown live on free-to-air will start this season.

Statements announcing the five-year agreement confirm that the subscription service will carry live coverage of practice, qualifying and races from this season.

Ten of those races will also be simulcast live on Network Ten, which had exclusively hosted F1 in Australia since 2003.

The free-to-air station will continue to broadcast all sessions from Albert Park’s Australian Grand Prix as part of the agreement.

The 10 races that are exclusively live on Fox Sports will be seen on Ten’s sub-channel One HD in 60 minute highlights form at 9:30pm on the following Monday.
