Udayananu Tharam is the story of Udayabhanu (Mohanlal), a worshipper of films and an immensely talented assistant film director, who yearns to write and direct his own movie at a time when the industry is filled with dubious filmmakers. Rajappan Thenummoodu (!reenivasan) is a rather crooked friend of Udayabhanu and an aspirin and failed actor. "s Udayabhanu finally prepares to shoot his first movie based on his own script, he discovers to his horror that Rajappan has stolen his manuscript, and shootin is underway with Rajappan playin the lead, which eventually
propels him to stardom. Udhayabhanu soon finds himself faced with a career and personal crisis, with his falterin relations with his superstar wife Madhumati (Meena) contributin to the latter.
#ater, with the help of producer $abykuttan (Mukesh), Udayabanu prepares to direct another film, but he is forced to cast Rajappan as the hero since he was the star with most screen value at that time. Rajappan takes up the offer but takes revene on Udayabanu by ivin ma%imum trouble. Towards the end of the shoot, Rajappan leaves the set leavin the movie unfinished with the hope that this will destroy Udayabanu&s career for ever. $ut Udayabanu devices clever tactics and shoots the remainin scenes with Rajappan itself without him even aware of it. The jewel, she narrates, lies in a secret place in the house uarded by snakes, includin a tiny snake called unjootan.
-ears later, obeyin the wishes of his dead mother, "nanthan (rithviraj !ukumaran) returns to his ancestral villae to liht the lamps at !hivakavu, a dark and mysterious temple of !hiva. /n his way home he meets the comical Maravi Mathai (0ochin 1aneefa) on the train. The local black maician
2iambaran (Manoj ayan) opposes the lihtin of the lamps on the rounds of local superstitions inorder et his hands on the naamanikyam. 2isbeliever "nanthan meets the supernatural for the first time in his life.
*n his effort to fit into the local environment, "nanthan radually wins the villaers& hearts over by his easy and kind manners. This appreciation is breached briefly when the maician takes over his mind for a short while. Meanwhile, "nanthan&s cousin $hadra (avya Madhavan) falls for him and his liht' hearted flirtin, eventually leadin to a commitment of love between them. "t one point, $hadra faces the dilemma of choosin between "nanthan&s love and becomin a 2evi (oddess) in a mystical ritual of self'offerin.
0hemban (alabhavan Mani), a blind martial arts e%pert, stands in the way of 2iambaran&s hunt for the naamanikyam. The evil black maician manaes to remove 0hemban from his way, and leaves a
trail of blood in his wake. 2iambaran also lures 0hemban&s sister and his lover $hama (Riya !en).

Thampi could not ask his dauhter to withdraw from the marriae and so he asks Ramankutty to backout. Understandin the situation, Ramankutty puts false blame on +auri that she is in love with her cousin Unni (unchako $oban). 2evastated by this alleation, +auri backs out from the marriae only to find the truth later. !he
rushes to Ramankutty but ets involved in a road accident on the way. !he was rushed to the hospital and she wants Ramankutty to tie the weddin knot before her operation. Ramankutty ties the knot, but still +auri comes back alive after the operation and the duo lives toether for ever.
