The editors of the 1906 Jewish

Encyclopedia implied that heprophesied after Haggai andZechariah and speculated that he

delivered his prophecies about 420BC, after the second return of

Nehemiah from Persia, or possiblybefore his return, comparing Malachi

    2:8 with Nehemiah 13:15; Malachi

    2:10-16 with Nehemiah 13:23.

According to the 1897 Easton'sBible Dictionary, it is possiblethat Malachi is not a proper

name, but simply means"messenger of YHWH. The

    Septuagint superscription is

Because Malachi's name does notoccur elsewhere in the Bible, some scholars indeed doubtwhether "Malachi" is intended tobe the personal name of theprophet. None of the otherprophetic books of the OldTestament are anonymous.

    NAME

The form mal'akhi, signifies "mymessenger"; it occurs in Malachi3:1. But this form of itself would

hardly be appropriate as a propername without some additionalsyllable such as Yah, whence

    mal'akhiah, i.e. "messenger ofElohim." "

Haggai, in fact, is expressly designated"messenger of Elohim". Besides, the

superscriptions prefixed to the book, inboth the Septuagint and the Vulgate,

warrant the supposition that Malachi'sfull name ended with the syllable -yah. Atthe same time the Septuagint translates

the last clause of Malachi 1:1, "by thehand of his messenger," and the Targumreads, "by the hand of my angel, whose

name is called Ezra the scribe.

The Jews of his day ascribed the Bookof Malachi, the last book of prophecy,to Ezra but if Ezra's name was originallyassociated with the book, it wouldhardly have been dropped by thecollectors of the prophetic Canon wholived only a century or two subsequentto Ezra's time.

Professor G.G. Cameron, suggests thatthe termination of the word "Malachi"

is adjectival, and equivalent to theLatin angelicus, signifying "one

charged with a message or mission".The term would thus be an officialtitle; and the thought would not be

unsuitable to one whose messageclosed the prophetical Canon of the

    Old Testament.

Opinions vary as to the prophet's exactdate, but nearly all scholars agree thatMalachi prophesied during the Persian

period, and after the reconstruction anddedication of the second temple in 516 BCThe prophet speaks of the "people's

governor", as do Haggai and Nehemiah. The social conditions portrayed are

unquestionably those also of the period ofthe Restoration.

    PERIOD

    More specifically, Malachi

probably lived and laboredduring the times of Ezra andNehemiah. The abuses which

Malachi mention in his writingscorrespond so exactly with

those which Nehemiah foundon his 2nd visit to Jerusalem in

    432 BC.

    Malachi was born

long before that wasnot an alien that itseems reasonably

    certain that heprophesied shortly

    before that date, i.e.between 445 and 432
