Part One of our vision is now complete. Opening our new Animal Health Center (AHC) will help thousands of owned pets and the people who love them. Although there is no income restriction on using our clinic facilities, many of our clientele are lower income families or retired citizens who are struggling financially but still want to keep their pets healthy and free from pain if they become sick or injured. A prime example of this is “Maggie”, a four-and-a-half year old Shih Tzu mix, who is featured on the cover. One day her owners found her unresponsive and laying in a pool of blood. They rushed her to our clinic where Dr. Christine Glenn ran tests and found she had a condition called

Hemorrhagic Gastroenteritis, also known as HGE. This condition can be very serious and even fatal if left untreated. X-rays also showed this sick little girl had bladder stones. As so often is the case, the owners had very limited funds but our staff uses our vision statement every day to guide us in the decisions we make. We treated Maggie and she made a full recovery.

This is just one of the many examples of how the new Animal Health Center can save the lives of beloved pets. And, because any proceeds that we make will help us fund our mission and the cost of sheltering thousands of animals each year, the AHC’s impact reaches even further. The Animal Health Center truly is a life-saving addition to our organization. Part Two of our vision is to build a new state-of-the-art shelter, next to the Animal Health Center, which will help house thousands of homeless pets in a much more comfortable environment while they wait to find a new home. Please stop by and check out our new facility when you’re in the neighborhood and thank you for continuing to support our vision of “Leading the Way Because Every Life Counts”.

And, of course, Maggie says thank you.

Sincerely,

Sherry SilkExecutive Director

Bob Reina with Sherry Silk announcing the Talk Fusion, Inc. sponsorship of the new

Animal Health Center

New Animal Health Center OpensIt started out as a dream four years ago. The Humane Society of Tampa Bay wanted to build a clinic to help the thousands of needy pets and owners in the Tampa Bay Community. At a cost of over $2 million, it seemed like A DrEAM THAT WOuLD HAvE TO WAiT.

We decided to begin offering affordable vaccines and vet care to pets in need at our 1,600 square foot spay/neuter clinic. Pet owners would wait for hours to have their pets examined for an affordable price. As cramped as the building was, at least pets were getting the affordable care they so badly needed. In 2011 more than 12,000 PETS rECEivED CArE iN Our SMALL CLiNiC.

We began reaching out to the community for help to build the new building. Several wonderful donors pledged to help. However, in 2010, during an economic recession, HSTB still needed over $1 million to start construction. It seemed as if THE DrEAM WOuLD HAvE TO WAiT EvEN LONGEr.

Then at the 2011 Tuxes & Tails event, Bob Reina, Founder and CEO of Talk Fusion Inc., surprised HSTB with a sponsorship of $1 MiLLiON TO FuND THE NEW HuMANE SOCiETy OF TAMPA BAy ANiMAL HEALTH CENTEr. The Center would be named in loving memory of Thunder and Shadow Reina.

THE DrEAM WOuLD NOW BECOME A rEALiTy!

Critter Camp 2012

This summer we held our

annual Critter Camp at the

shelter. We held a total of

six one-week sessions and had

more than 130 kids attend!

The kids learned about

the animals and how to

be responsible pet owners.

They also made crafts and

spent a lot of time with our

adoptables.

The dogs and cats loved the

extra attention they got from

these little animal lovers

and the kids had a great

summer at our shelter.

Volunteer of the QuarterOur wonderful volunteers, Janet and David Saunders, have been volunteering with us for over 2 years.  In that time they have volunteered in many different areas. David helps the adoption staff with adoptions and Janet does a wonderful job spending time with the cats and making sure that they are updated on the website.

Both Janet and David drive our van to events to do adoptions and outreach. They have fostered many cats and dogs, ranging from kittens to dogs that need a little extra love and attention.

Combined the Saunders have donated over 1,500 hours to the animals! Thank you for your dedication to the animals!

Fostering for LifeEvery week the Humane Society of Tampa Bay has underage puppies and kittens, as well as

pets with special needs, entering our facility. Without foster homes we would be unable to help these animals. Foster parenting allows you to directly save a life (or several)!

HSTB transferred Julietta and her nine pups from Hillsborough County Animal Services. Due to a lack of space and the fact that she was heartworm positive, they were all going to be euthanized unless a rescue group took them. Once at HSTB Julietta and her 9 puppies were sent to a loving foster home.

When she finished nursing, her pups were returned to the shelter for adoption. Then, she started her life-saving heart worm treatment. After just a few months of fostering, Julietta found her fur-ever home (see below).

If you’re interested in becoming a foster parent please contact Alicia at 813-252-2027 to help save a life!

Pet-A-Pet ProgramOur Pet-A-Pet program pairs HSTB volunteers and their pets with assisted living facilities. This is a wonderful opportunity that allows residents in assisted living facilities to spend some time with a dog or cat.

As animal lovers we know the benefits that having a pet provides. Pet-A-Pet shares the love and comfort of a pet with people who are not able to have the constant companionship of an animal.

Humane Society of Tampa Bay volunteers also enjoy sharing the love of their pets with others. They hear wonderful stories from senior, veteran, and disabled residents about the pets they once owned and loved. They feel so much gratitude for having brought their own pets to these facilities.

And, of course, the dogs and cats love being showered with so much attention.

Successful Adoptions

Chloe

Lilly

Sammy

Mia & Ripley

On April 27, 2011 my husband and I adopted a young dog named Chloe.

I suffer from severe anxiety attacks and the first time I had one after adopting Chloe, she reacted in such a way that only a trained service dog would. She literally laid her body on top of mine and licked my face and neck. Due to her weight my breathing started to slow faster than any time before and she continued to lick me until I fell asleep. upon waking, she was right beside me with her neck and face laying on my neck. She was fully awake and seemed to be checking my pulse against her own skin. It was truly amazing. I could not stop holding and loving her, she was my salvation. I started training Chloe and now she is a fully certified service dog, my service dog. I love her as much as I do my grown sons.

Jeff and Dawn Clark

I adopted my baby girl Lilly in January, a black and white domestic short hair. I absolutely love her! She and Lulu my other baby (also black and white) are buds! Thank you to the wonderful staff at the Humane Society. Lulu, Lilly and I make a great family!

Jessica Valdez

We adopted Budd (now Sammy) in April.  He is the light of our lives.  From the day I brought him home he has been such a delight.  He loves to play ball and play keep away from Dad.  He has been to the park, gone swimming in the pool, and on picnics with Mom and Dad.

I want to thank everyone for a wonderful experience I had in adopting Sammy. We are grateful for the opportunity to love Sammy.

Sandy Servidio

I’m including before and after pictures of the babies, Mia and Ripley.  I adopted them about two years ago.  I had picked out Mia on the website and Ripley grabbed at me from one of the cages as I went by – he quickly demonstrated his case for adoption.

The cats are such an important part of my life and have brought me such pleasure.  My adoption experience with the Humane Society of Tampa Bay was amazing and I remain impressed with the systems you have in place and how many homes you find for animals.  Thank you so much!
