Sunglasses may be cool and much loved by celebrities, but their real aim is to protect the eyes and give comfortable vision in bright conditions. Sunglasses reduce the amount of light reaching the eye and protect it from damaging ultra-violet radiation – UVR. Changes in the atmosphere are making UVR a growing environmental hazard. Over time, these rays may damage the eyes and are thought to be a major factor in the development of cataracts and macular disease. Even the UK has its share of harsh sunlight and experts recommend that people should protect their eyes on bright days. Without this protection from UVR, you could be increasing the risk of unsightly crow’s feet, snow blindness, cataracts and retinal damage. Children , in particular, need protection from the sun as they are at greater risk of retinal damage. A peaked cap is ideal for children under three, but older children should be wearing sunglasses as soon as possible. Before buying any sunglasses check for the BS label which shows that they filter out the harmful UVR. Beware of poor quality sunglasses and tints that are too dark as these may make your eyes more sensitive to light. The problems of glare Direct sun is the most powerful source of UVR, but there is also a significant risk from reflections off roads, buildings, water, and especially snow. Most drivers will have experienced sudden glare from their windscreen or annoying low winter sunshine. The glare from water affects water sports enthusiasts and skiers need to be aware of the dangers of glare off snow which can hide hazardous bumps and dips. Clear solutions To solve the problem of glare and offer full protection from UVR, there is a huge variety of sunglasses available. If you already wear spectacles, prescription quality sunglasses can be made to the same high standards as our existing spectacles. Some of the sunglasses from our practice have special lenses to reduce reflected glare from roads, water and snow. This makes them ideal for driving, sailing, fishing and skiing. Today, polarized glasses are universallyrecommended and recognised to be the bestSunglasses there are.

How do polarized glasses work?

Light rays reach us in one of 3 ways:· Directly,· Diffused (by the atmosphere),· Reflected (by a light-coloured flat surface).

We naturally take precautions against direct light, butpay less attention to reflected light. Some light isreflected from any surface, but the amount increaseswhen the reflecting surface is light coloured andreflective (like snow, sand or water).

Polarised lenses include a polarising film that candistinguish between different sorts of light, and onlylets through light rays that don’t dazzle and are“useful” for vision. It acts like a sort of MicroscopicVenetian blind, eliminating glare by blocking just theirritating light rays.

Who should consider Polarized glasses?· Drivers irritated by dazzle from the dashboard, a wet road, other vehicles, etc.· People who enjoy outdoor sports (like skiing or water sports)· Spectacle wearers who have a reduced

perception of contrast.· Contact-lens wearers.· Anyone sensitive to bright light.· More generally, all who value their visual comfort.
