What is Athens?

Athens is an authentication system that allows you to use one username and password toaccess a number of different databases and electronic services to which an institutionsubscribes.

Opening an Athens account at CoventryUniversityCoventry University students are automatically given an Athens username and passwordupon registration.

Your individual Athens account details will take the following format:

Username: cov[Coventry University Username]Password: cov[ddmmyy]

where [ddmmyy] represents your date of birth in ddmmyy format

If, for example, your Coventry University Username were blogsj and your date of birthwere 29 Feb 1980, your Athens details would be:

username: covblogsjpassword: cov290280

You may change your password and see what Athens authenicated resources areavailable by logging on at http://www.athensams.net/myathens/ 

You have been allocated this account on the grounds of membership of CoventryUniversity. You will be allowed to access the services for which the university has rightsand are obliged to abide by the licence conditions of those services. Any abuse of theserights may lead to withdrawal of access. Your username and password are personal toyou and you would be ill-advised to share them with anyone at any time. Personal information relating to your account may be used by Athens solely for the

purpose of the administration of your account.

How else can I open an Athens account?It is possible to create your own account.

Access the Athens website http://www.athens.ac.uk where you can self register andcreate you own Athens password.

Registering in this manner does not always get you all the access rights to journals thatthe university password can offer.

 journalsMost publishers make electronic copies of their journals available online. Some havecreated their own web sites and others use a third party that hosts the journals of multiple

publishers. Logging on using an Athens username and password allows you to accessyour institution's online subscriptions even when you are outside the institution's normal IPrange. This means that you get remote access to your library's journals when you are noton campus.

Once you have accessed the online database using your Athens password you should beable to search the database in a similar manner to most library catalogues e.g. by name, journal, article title, keyword, date or combinations of these.
