Making the linkWe have made a commitment to being involved in the Heretaunga Futures ICTPD Cluster. Through the use of information processes, the integration of ICT and the movement from a teacher centred approach to a child centred approach to teaching, we aim to raise the quality of teaching and learning and increase student achievement.

As a cluster we are at the stage where we are exploring different

information processes and preparing to plan for our own inquiry learning units either as syndicates or individual classes.

This is a interactive resource for teachers to help make the link between Information Literacy and ICT. This resource explores an information process and explains the different resources and things you could use at each of the stages. This resource can be used by teachers when planning their own inquiry learning unit or to share at workshops, seminars or staff meetings.

Hopefully this resource will not only outline the steps in an information process but give you lots of ideas on how to integrate ICT into your classroom programme.

This resource will enable you to more clearly make the link between information literacy and ICT and assist you when planning for a unit.

Immersion and Ignition

At this stage of the information process we are saturating the students with information on the topic. The students become ‘masterminds’ in the topic – acquiring knowledge of the topic now, in the past and in the future.

They become something of an expert. We read, watch, listen, discuss, view, think about, wonder, review, experience, mind map.

Wonderings and Questioning

At this stage in the information process we are wondering and asking things about the topic. We are preparing rich higher order thinking questions that we still want answers to. What still interests you? What do you still want to find information on? We are creating the essential question or hypothesis. We are creating subsidiary questions or supporting questions to help us answer our essential question.

We are discussing and creating assessment criteria possibly using a rubric.

Planning and Search Strategy

At this stage of the information process we are forming a plan that will help us answer our questions. Students will fill out an Inquiry Planner. It will be filled out and signed by the teacher BEFORE students start gathering information to answer their questions.

What sources can students use?What are all the sources students could use to get the information they need. Get students to make a wish list. List of possible sources

Where do I go to find each of the sources I want to use?School Library or Public Library. The Internet is a great source of information but can waste time as you search. Try specific search engines.

Discovering and Interpreting

At this stage in the information process simply follow through with and complete your inquiry planner. Use an organiser to help store information, your own thoughts and discoveries...wonderings that might require further answers.

Creating and Communicating

At this stage of the information process students should be asking these questions.

How can I put all of my discoveries together to present what I have learned? What presentation format does my assignment require? (paper, poster, oral presentation, etc.)

Students may need to go back and review your assignment sheet or assessment criteria to be sure of what is required.

If students have complete freedom and haven’t make a decision yet,look at alternative formats to present information.

Celebrate and EvaluateAt this stage in the information process students should be self assessing or pair assessing their work and the process they followed to gain the information to their questions. They should be asking themselves things like: Is this assignment/presentation any good? Students should be the first person to evaluate their own work.

Is my task finished? How did I do?Have I complete the assignment given by the teacher? Go back and review the assignment criteria again to be sure e.g. rubric. Have I completed all the parts? This evaluation depends on a lot of different criteria. Some of the criteria might be written by the teacher in the assignment or given as a rubric.

Possible sources of Information

Get students to highlight the sources on their list that they will most likely be able to use, given the time andsources you have available. Give them a prioritised number order for which you will use first, which second... etc...Once you do this, students can put this information onto their Inquiry Planner.

Hint: Librarians are very useful at knowing which kinds of sources can be used to find certain types of information. Use their expertise. It will save students valuable time.
