What We DoThe mission of Communities In Schools is to surround

students with a community of support empowering them to stay in school and achieve in life.

Communities In Schools is the nation’s largest dropout prevention organization.

By bringing caring adults into the schools to address children’s unmet needs, CIS provides the link between educators and the community. The result: teachers are free to teach, and students – many in jeopardy of dropping out – have the opportunity to focus on learning.

CIS of Glynn County believes that every child needs and deserves “Five Basics.”

Five Basic Needs

• A one-on-one relationship with a caring adult

• A safe place to learn and grow

• A healthy start and a healthy future

• A marketable skill to use upon graduation

• A chance to give back to peers and community

Stories FromOur Students BOBBY’S STORY

Bobby enrolled into CIS services in November of 2013. He was a freshman in need of guidance and had no plans after high school. His home life was chaotic. Bobby watched a family member suffer the consequences of legal issues, after which he became an angry young man and completely gave up on school. When CIS staff met with Bobby, he had stopped coming to school and was in danger of being lost to the “streets.” During this interview, staff discovered he wanted to play football. With the help of the coaches, we were able to show Bobby that he could play football next school year if his grades met minimum requirements. Working closely with his CIS site coordinator, Bobby got all of his assignments caught up. Once he discovered that he was passing and able to play football, Bobby’s life changed. He came to school daily, worked hard and performed well. Bobby still faced struggles at home and required assistance with basic needs, but with support, he was able to play football his sophomore and junior year. While he was short the needed credits to play football his senior year, Glynn Academy football staff allowed him to travel with the football team and go on the field for support. He was able to go to Atlanta with the team as they played

in the championship game at the Georgia Dome. Bobby graduated on May 27 and has plans to pursue his dream of dancing professionally. Bobby and students in similar situations are the reason Communities in Schools of Glynn is critical to the success of at-risk youth.

A Tribute to Dave T. Smith, Jr. On May 10, 2017, CIS Glynn lost a great friend and found-ing board member. Dave Smith has been an integral part of the fabric of our organization. Serving in the capacity of treasurer for a number of years, he spent countless hours of his time ensuring our fiscal health. Education was Dave Smith’s passion. Specifically, he wanted the youth of Glynn County to have opportunities for success. It was this pas-sion that led Dave to serve as an elected member of the Glynn County Board of Education for four years, including two years as chairman. It was also this passion that kept him serving the youth of Glynn County for another decade after this through his volunteer work.

Dave made a difference in his community and he made a difference in the lives of the students we serve. His foot-print will be with CIS Glynn for many years to come and his legacy is the on-time graduation of hundreds of students because of his dedication to our mission.

Dave will be missed by his fellow board members, the staff of CIS Glynn, and by the community he served so well.

Student’s Stories Continued QUENTIN’S STORY

Quentin Gill is a 2nd time Kindergarten student and new student to Burroughs-Molette Elementary.  Upon entering school this year the teachers and administrators began seeing behavior issues interfering with his ability to learn in the classroom.  Quentin was referred to CIS and we began immediately making home contact for a family needs assessment. We learned that he had lost his mother suddenly during the start of the 2015-2016 school year and was adjusting to the loss and placement with his father. Communities In Schools gave the family the resources to help Quentin adjust to his placement and deal with the loss he suffered. Since his referral into the program we have seen major improvements in his behavior. Quentin is actively learning and engaging in class with a drastic reduction in office referrals since becoming a CIS student.

Partners In EducationAT&T has a national focus on youth education. In fact, the company’s Aspire program is a commitment of $350 million towards education. According to Gary Sanchez, Regional Director of External Affairs for AT&T, “I agree with that focus because I believe there is nothing more closely tied to a community’s future success than improving the educational success of its youth. Communities in Schools does an incredible job of improving student success in the local community. The organization has created a proven evidence based system for helping students achieve graduation regardless of where they are starting. It’s the type of opportunity that our students need. Another great aspect of what CIS does is that they document their work so that you can easily see the results. That documentation provides assurance that companies are investing in something that is helping students.”

Locally, the partnership with AT&T has made quite an impact. A long-term partnership, with over $50,000.00 invested in our Glynn County youth, allowed students served by CIS Glynn to receive critical services promoting on-time graduation. Gary is not just a financial partner, he has taken an interest in the success of our youth and is often in Glynn County for important milestone events. According to Lynn Love, Executive Director of CIS Glynn, “Our partnership with AT&T is critical to the success of our mission.”

The commitment of AT&T to the success of our youth has been a multi-year partnership and we have a vision that it will continue until we reach a 100% on-time graduation rate in Glynn County. Thank you Gary for your stewardship of AT&T’s investment and for your commitment to our youth.
