Dedicated “Great Walk” - Walking and Cycling Corridor between Alex and Sandton
A 5km dedicated walking and cycling corridor from No 3 Square in Alexandra to the Sandton CBD, including a new iconic pedestrian and cyclist bridge at Grayston Drive bridge;
Role: Provide a formalised, safe walking environment for the over 10 000 people who walk
between Alexandra and Sandton CBD each day.
Will go past the public transport interchange making it easy for people to walk or cycle to public transport.
Contribute to reducing the divide between Alexandra and surrounding communities

We are working with Gautrain authorities, metered and mini bus taxi industry to implement the following: • Closure of existing Sandton taxi rank and taxis to
rank in Sandton Gautrain station and temporary holding on cnr Katherine Street and Albertyn (by: 2015)
• New taxi holding facility cnr. Katherine and West (by: 2018)
• Metered taxi rank for 50 taxis in Gautrain Station (by 2018)
We have just gone out for tender for a service provider to develop an integrated operational plan which will identify the most appropriate routes for BRT, Metrobus, PUTCO, mini bus taxis, metered taxis and Avanzas.
We will negotiate this with affected public transport operators
For members of the public this will lead to a DENSER public transport network, making public transport more accessible and reducing the need to use a car to come into the Sandton CBD
To be operationalised by 2017
In the short term we have discussed or are in discussion with owners/developers of the following malls to become Park and Rides for Gautrain buses, Rea Vaya or Metrobus: Brightwater Commons Monte casino Waterfall Nicolway
We will also be looking at sites along Louis Botha, Old Johannesburg road for dedicated park and ride – to develop in partnership with developers for Rea Vaya park and rides.
Building infrastructure and introducing services will not necessarily mean that people will get out of their cars to use public transport or cycle
The City also has to enable and support behavioural change through: Providing high quality public transport information Making sure using these modes are safe through
enforcement and awareness Activations and campaigns
Our key initiative to shift mind sets and modes will be a month long Eco-Mobility Festival in October 2015 preceded by a Cycle Week in March 2015
Month long international festival to be arranged in partnership with ICLEL (international association for sustainable local government)
Will be second international festival – first was in Suwon, South Korea
Will involve closing certain streets in Sandton for one month to cars but allowing all other eco-mobile forms including electric cars, tuk tuks, cyclists etc.
Will include an international conference, street festivals, fun runs, healthy food markets etc.
Detailed transport and traffic study to determine which streets to close and how to mitigate impact – including to provide additional public transport, pop up cycle lanes, provision for deliveries etc.
More extensive public consultation with residents, workers and stakeholders
Seeking of partnerships and sponsorships locally and internationally
