Nouns •What is a noun?
•What is special about nouns in Spanish?
In general, if a noun ends in:
• -a then it is singular and feminine Example: mochila (bookbag)
•-o then it is singular and masculine Example: cuaderno (notebook)
•s then it is plural Example: mochilas (bookbags) Example: cuadernos (notebooks)
Exceptions•Sometimes there are nouns that end in an
–a and are considered masculine words: ▫Example: mapa (map) is considered a
masculine word!
•Sometimes there are words that end in an –o and are considered feminine words: ▫Example: mano (hand) is considered a
feminine word!
Exceptions 2•There are words that end –e and these
can be either feminine or masculine! ▫Coche – car = M▫Leche – milk -F
•There are nouns that end in a consonant and these can also be either masculine or feminine! ▫Examen – exam / test – M

•There are rules that make figuring out the gender of these words easy! But for today all you have to do is remember the following 2 rules and 3 words.
Rules1. If the word ends in –ción or -ión the
noun is feminine. 2. If the noun ends in –tad, -dad, or –
umbre the noun is feminine.
3. Suerte = luck; lucky – (F)4. Sol = (sun) – (M) 5. Frijol = (bean) –(M)

Making nouns plural•If a noun ends in a vowel add an –s to
make it plural.
▫la página (page) las páginas▫el cuaderno (notebook) los cuadernos▫la mochila (bookbag) las mochilas▫el bolígrafo (pen) los bolígrafos
•If a noun ends in a consonant add –es to make it plural. ▫el señor los señores ▫el papel los papeles ▫el examen los exámenes
Ojo! If the word ends in a z, first change the z to a
c and then add –es ▫el lápiz los lápices ▫el pez los peces
If a word ends in n or s and there is a written accent on the last vowel do two things. Add -es and drop the accent.▫la nación las naciones▫el francés los franceses

Part 3: Definite articles
In English we use the definite article:

In Spanish, to say “THE” we use the definite articles
