FROM THE PRINCIPAL’S DESK Teaching and learning Currently Bellingen Public School is hosting pre-service teachers from both the University of Newcastle (2) and the University of New England (2). I have been actively involved with each of them, and last week I was fortunate enough to watch both Lucy Hunt and Kayla Edwards teach; one with 3/4P and the other with 3/4M. They are both University of Newcastle students. Each observed lesson focussed on literacy. Each pre-service teacher displayed great skill in engaging all students, and in their own ability to reflect deeply on how students learn best. An absolute pleasure to watch and learn from young teachers and share in their enthusiasm for teaching students well. Thank you. Celebrating learning Picking up on enthusiasm for learning….it is always a joy to share learning successes with students, and last week was no exception. Harmony, from 1/2O came to share her reading success with me which was outstanding. And, I was also privileged to join with 5/6M as they engaged in coding whilst in the computer lab. Student safety crossing roads I ask that all parents and carers please take particular care dropping their children off, or in the afternoon, collecting their children. This is particularly important in the afternoons with the concentration of buses, at the front of the school. Please do not cross between the buses but use the designated crossing. We would all appreciate this key attention to safety for all. Yours in partnership Graeme Ross, Principal

BOOK WEEK Sorry we have missed Book Week but with the stage one musical and other things happening we thought it would be too much to ask of you all at once. But don't worry, we will be having a late book week and a dress up parade in week 10 this term. We will let you know which day ASAP. Regards Carole McFaul, Librarian ROCKS, Rocks and more rocks If you have rock-a-plenty on your block and would like to contribute to our "Pond Project" then please drop us a load over the fence near the veggie patch. 2 to 50 welcome! If you have no rocks about, but would be willing to bring a sledge hammer and move rocks already in our school grounds please contact Liz or Viv and we can direct your muscles!! If you know of someone with a paddock full of rocks, that they are happy to donate, can you let us know and we will pick them up. Thank you for supporting our project. They will be used to hold down the pond liner and create pockets of habitat for frogs. With a student population of 380 plus, we could build a replica Pyramid with 10 rocks each!! Please be involved with making our garden and playground uniquely beautiful so children really feel proud of their environment and the efforts of their parents and teachers. Elizabeth Scott, Viv Evans working alongside Ross. Liz Scott GARDEN NEWS - "The Passion Patch" Every Wednesday lunchtime, Ms Scott, Ms Viv and Ann love to see our merry band of keen gardeners turn up, always willing to take on the ever growing list of jobs and instructions that help us with planning for the fast approaching season of Spring time planting and the next move on the "Frog Bog" project. They listen attentively when we first gather to discuss soil improvement, composting, re-cycling, being mindful of each other when using tools, and sharing their knowledge with new gardeners in The Patch. At present, we are all looking forward to a Bellingen Primary School Stall at the Spring Plant Fair which is held on Saturday 8th September. Please drop by and say"hi" as the children are busily preparing seedlings and cuttings to sell and further aid our veggie patch in maintenance and projects planned for this year. We would appreciate any donations that can be dropped off to the Music Rooms verandah over the next two weeks to help fill our stall and make it look blooming wonderful!!!! Examples could be... • Seedlings or a potted plant. • Produce...eg.abundance of avocados, citrus etc. • Specimen plant for our Raffle. With a lot more sunshine and light in our gardens after a big prune of a few trees, we are now expecting a surge in growth over Spring to help supply Matt and his helpers in the Canteen with nutritious salad bowls. Pray for Rain, Happy Gardening and Hope to see you at the Spring Plant Fair...... Viv Evans

SENIOR STRINGS Scottish Ceilidh, Saturday, September 1 The Senior String players are all excited about being the guest performers at this month's Scottish Ceilidh. The Ceilidh, held in the Uniting Church Complex, is an evening of dance, playing, cheerful community and sharing in supper. It is a family friendly activity and involves cups of tea rather than beer! The cost is $5 for adults and performers come for free. We have been working up our Scottish, Irish and Welsh jigs and reels to add to the enjoyment of the evening. The children are also researching their Clan's Tartan if they have UK Heritage. The students will be fortunate to be joined by traditional Scottish instruments and their players from the 'Fireside Celts'.

Liz Scott P & C REQUEST – MARKET HELPER Help Needed for September Markets! The P&C have managed to secure the “shake a bucket” spot at the Bellingen Market September 15th. We only need an hour of your time! The Market provides a great fundraising opportunity in exchange for help setting up and packing down, and we also need volunteers to collect gold coin donations at the entrances in hourly shifts. Last market we raised around $1000 for the school! A roster will be at the front desk of the office from tomorrow or call Elektra on 0412 33 6090 to give us a hand. All money raised goes towards resources to help our kids and our school. Thanks! Elektra Macdonald P & C President

THINKING SKILLS - THINKING FLEXIBLY Look at it another way!

Being open- minded, able to change perspectives, generating alternatives, and considering options. "If you never change your mind, why have one?"

Edward deBono An amazing discovery about the human brain is its plasticity--its ability to "rewire", change and even repair itself to become smarter. Flexible people are the ones with the most control. They have the capacity to change their mind as they receive additional data. They engage in multiple and simultaneous outcomes and activities, draw upon a repertoire of problem solving strategies and can practice style flexibility, knowing when it is appropriate to be broad and global in their thinking and when a situation requires detailed precision. They create and seek novel approaches and have a well-developed sense of humour. They envision a range of consequences. Flexible people can approach a problem from a new angle using a novel approach; deBono (1970) refers to this as lateral thinking. They consider alternative points of view or deal with several sources of information simultaneously. Their minds are open to change based on additional information and data or reasoning, which contradicts their beliefs. Flexible people know that they have and can develop options and alternatives to consider. They understand mean-ends relationships being able to work within rules, criteria and regulations and they can predict the consequences of flouting them. They understand not only the immediate reactions but are also able to perceive the bigger purposes that such constraints serve. Thus, flexibility of mind is essential for working with social diversity, enabling an individual to recognize the wholeness and distinctness of other people's ways of experiencing and making meaning. Flexible thinkers are able to shift, at will, through multiple perceptual positions. One perceptual orientation is what Jean Piaget called, egocentrism--perceiving from our own point of view. By contrast, allocentrism is the position in which we perceive through another persons' orientation. We operate from this second position when we empathize with other's feelings, predict how others are thinking, and anticipate potential misunderstandings. Another perceptual position is "macro-centric". It is similar to looking down from a balcony at ourselves and our interactions with others. This bird’s-eye view is useful for discerning themes and patterns from assortments of information. It is intuitive, holistic and conceptual. Since we often need to solve problems with incomplete information, we need the capacity to perceive general patterns and jump across gaps of incomplete knowledge or when some of the pieces are missing. Yet another perceptual orientation is micro-centric--examining the individual and sometimes minute parts that make up the whole. This "worm’s-eye view", without which science, technology, and any complex enterprise could not function, involves logical analytical computation searching for causality in methodical steps. It requires attention to detail, precision, and orderly progressions. Flexible thinkers display confidence in their intuition. They tolerate confusion and ambiguity up to a point,

and are willing to let go of a problem trusting their subconscious to continue creative and productive work on it. Flexibility is the cradle of humour, creativity and repertoire. While there are many possible perceptual positions--past, present, future, egocentric, allocentric, macro centric, visual, auditory, kinaesthetic--the flexible mind is activated by knowing when to shift perceptual positions. Some students have difficulty in considering alternative points of view or dealing with more than one classification system simultaneously. Their way to solve a problem seems to be the only way. They perceive situations from a very ego-centered point of view: "My way or the highway!" Their mind is made up; "Don't confuse me with facts, that's it."

Denise Head (RFF Thinking Skills) OPERA HOUSE CHOIR Through the Arts Unit, The Department of Education provides exceptional opportunities for music students attending public schools. At Bellingen Public, we have been regularly attending both their Festival of Choral and Instrumental Music, held each year in the Opera House. Hundreds of schools audition for a place in the Festivals. Since 2004, this year was our first miss.😖😖 Wishing for the greatest number of students to experience this magnificent opportunity, I am not leaving the audition recording to last term! 😉😉 So many lovely compliments came to our Senior Choir from the Show Case Evening and we will record whilst they are at the top of their singing. This audition song will also become the music you will hear when 'on hold' at the office. Recording day is Monday, September 3. All students who came to the Initial Choir 'fun day' are encouraged/expected to sing for the Choir of the 2019. Please ensure your choir member is in their best school uniform on Monday as the recording is visual as well. Please encourage your child to practise 'In the Arms of an Oak Tree' all week!🎶🎶🎹🎹😍😍 Kind Regards Liz Scott, Music Co ordinator

Stitched Up Ten Year Celebration Bellingen Stitched Up is a free group where high school aged girls work with volunteer mentors to work on all kinds of creative projects, whether it be sewing, knitting, crocheting, quilting, embroidery or crafting. A Stitch in Time: the Ten Year Anniversary Celebration will be held from 1.00 pm to 4.00 pm on the 1st of September 2018, at the Bellingen Uniting Church Hall. The community is invited to come and enjoy a display of stitched creations from both girls and mentors, with a catwalk parade of dresses and garments at 2.00 pm. A high tea, with scones, cakes and delicious goodies will be on sale from 3.00 pm. Stitched Up is also seeking to invite any previous girls or mentors to the celebration, to re-unite with their sewing sisters. For those now out of the area, they’re asking families or friends in Bellingen to pass on this invitation.
