Making it Meaner and “Leaner”!

The Current State In the current state, there are several flaws

and wastes which exist. Damaged parts (defects or existing) Poor Communication (shop vs. office) Wasted Time (time spent cleaning and working

scrap parts) No Operator Involvement in Control of Bad or

Damaged parts.

The Product This is a T53 Engine

One of our more basic engine service types.

The Defect(s)

The Old/Current Method(s) In the Current State, there are only three

(3) people whom may deem a part unfit for service and/or scrap. Inspectors / NDI Inspectors Level II or III Engineering Quality Assurance Manager

The Plan The plan is to approach this issue at a shop

level and work at tackling incoming parts that exhibit damage or defects which should be stopped and removed.

Full involvement from all departments including Production Management and Shop Support is required (and has been approved).

How to? The issue of how to approach this situation

was discussed amongst the several department heads and ownership at a meeting after this project had begun the planning stages.

Ultimately it was decided that Operators needed the ability and criteria to reject or stop parts with defects and flaws.

Implementation! In the pursuit of tackling our objectives, we

brought about several changes including standardized part checks and criteria for operators. Defect checks (serious, extensive, “hidden”

damage)

Three Documents were drawn up in order to record and handle these issues.

Future State (Expected to become Current by New Years!)

At this point, our goals are in the works of reaching fruition and we have handled several test pieces admirably.

The idea at this time is to have approximately 95% of all damaged components removed and/or identified prior to inspection.

Future State (yea… It’s a second slide!)

Other goals include training and further clarification of approaches to be used

Controlling damaging factors be it external (shipping company?) or internal (accidental damage?)

Managing and Recovery of parts if possible.
