Chapter 3 : Using Math Warm-Ups in Guided MathGuided Math Book StudyFrom the perspective of a middle grades teacher

Needs to be a routine1 or 2 quick tasksStudents can complete on their ownDiscussed as whole-groupShould be carefully planned with student needs in mindStandards-basedReview problemsTopic of the dayLook ahead to future concepts

Warm-Ups Set the tone for the day

Absolutely!I cant think of a single classroom at my school not conducting daily warm-ups. In fact, they are part of our lesson plan. Does this work for Middle Grades?

Just like an athlete needs to stretch to maximize performance, so do students!Math Stretches

Data Collection & AnalysisNumber of the DayWhats NextHow Did My Family Use Math Last Night?________Makes Me Think Of ..Vary these throughout the week.Types of Math Stretches

Use questions that will allow for data collectionDecide best graph {students eventually do this in middle school}Real graphs ~ actual packs of crackersPictographs ~ pictures of itemsSymbolic graph ~ cubes or sticky notes {used more in middle school}Have manipulatives availableStudents love comparison and want to analyze

Data Collection & Analysis

Teacher writes number on chart paperStudents write a different representation as they come inThis is very critical for students to understand!

Teacher has pattern written on chart paper or white boardStudents fill in blanks as they come inDont correct students work yetMiddle School Examples1, 4, 9, ___, ___, 36, ___, ___, etc1, 1, 2, 3, 5, 8, 13, 21, etcWhats Next

Other SuggestionsMiddle school students still enjoy helping the teacher!Middle school students are much more aware of the world around them than you might think!

Calendar BoardProblem of the Day often part of this timeLearn math incrementallyAllows for visual modelsDesigned for growth in mathematical languageTypically in elementary classroomsI dont see being able to spend time on this every day in a middle school environment due to time constraints.I do have a plan for using this set-up in a remediation class we have each day during what my school calls ELT. This is typically bubble students on our state-mandated test. These basic skills would be perfect for that environment! I plan to do another video on that at a later date.Other Suggestions

Absolutely!!!I cant wait to give it a try!Can Guided Math work in a middle grades classroom?
