Archeologists have found pieces of bread inside tombs. They had been left there by the family and friends of people who had died so that they would have food to eat in the afterlife.

These pieces of bread are thousands of years old!

How Egyptians made bread

Egyptians grew wheat and barley.

Once the plants were fully grown, they harvested them.

They shook the grains from the plants.

Once they got the grains out of the plants, they had to grind them into flour.

Once the grain had been ground into soft flour, the bakers were ready to mix it with water and yeast. They often added dates (a kind of fruit) to make the bread sweeter.

Ready for the oven

Egyptians often used large bowls as their bread pans. They put the dough in the bowls, let it rise, and then put the bowl right into the hot embers from the fire.

Other times, they made the dough into shapes such as fish, animals and people!
