Paul R. Wylie lectures on massacres through history for Stephen E. Ambrose Memorial Lecture

Bozeman writer Paul R. Wylie was the distinguished speaker at the Foundation’s Stephen Ambrose Memorial Lecture on October 12, 2016. Wylie’s book, Blood on the Marias: The Baker Massacre (University of Oklahoma Press, 2016), documents one of the most heinous incidents of the Indian Wars. His lecture compared the high profile casualties of recent mass shootings and battles since the Civil War with relatively unknown massacres of Indian tribes in the 19th century such as the Baker massacre that took place on the Marias River in the winter of 1870. The audience of nearly 55 people asked many thoughtful questions about this somber, but important event in Montana’s history. Wylie is also the author of The Irish General: Thomas Francis Meagher published in 2011.

Paul Wylie was raised in the small rural mountain town of White Sulphur Springs in Meagher County, Montana and went on to graduate from Montana State University with a bachelors in chemical engineering before working as a rocket engineer, and later moving on to Washington, D.C., to be a patent examiner and obtain his law degree from American University.

Before heading home to Bozeman, Wylie generously donated several copies of his book, Blood on the Marias , to the Lewis & Clark Library—enough for every branch to carry a copy. His website is http://www.paulrwylie.com.

Making a great library even better!

The Lewis & Clark Library, Montana Historical Society and Carroll College presented An Evening with Timothy Egan on April 19, 2016 at Carroll College. Egan spoke to an enthusiastic crowd of nearly 325 about his newly released book, The Immortal Irishman: The Irish Revolutionary Who Became an American Hero, which is about Thomas Francis Meagher. He spoke for nearly an hour without skipping a beat, followed by a book signing.

Before the lecture, the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation hosted a donor reception with Egan at the Montana Historical Society. The catered reception featured Irish-themed small bites, craft beer, and wine. The award-winning author made sure to visit each table to meet and chat with the invited guests.

Egan is the author of seven books. His nonfiction account of the Dust Bowl, The Worst Hard Time, won the 2006 National Book Award, considered one of the nation’s highest literary honors, and he was featured prominently in the 2012 Ken Burns film on the Dust Bowl. His other nonfiction works include The Big Burn: Teddy Roosevelt and the Fire that Saved America, Short Nights of the Shadow Catcher: The Epic Life and Immortal Photographs of Edward Curtis, and The Good Rain: Across Time and Terrain in the Pacific Northwest. A lifelong journalist, Timothy Egan writes an online opinion column for The New York Times. Prior to that, Egan was a national correspondent for the Times, roaming the West. As a Times correspondent, he shared a Pulitzer Prize in 2001 with a team of reporters for its series, “How Race is Lived in America.”

8th Annual Community Leaders Poetry Reading

The Lewis & Clark Library Foundation celebrated National Poetry Month with the 8th Annual Community Leaders Poetry Reading on April 26, 2016. Foundation President Joe Furshong said “each reading demonstrates that poetry truly is a language that, though often overlooked in the age of texting and tweeting, still speaks powerfully to each of us.” Board member Dennis Taylor emceed the reading.

A beloved director retires . . .

Director of the Lewis & Clark Library for 11 years, Judy Hart retired after a whirlwind of accomplishments that included bringing the Bookmobile to the county in 2012, getting a permanent levy passed in 2008, creating

a teen services librarian position, and launching 10 consecutive Big Read events from 2007 to 2016. She also worked with the branch libraries in Augusta, Lincoln, and East Helena to make lasting improvements there, and served as secretary on the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation Board. And a new director takes the helm.

In January, John Finn started as the library’s new director and worked alongside Judy Hart until late March to ease into the busy job. Prior to this position, he managed a branch library in Beaverton, Oregon, the Hearst Free Library in Anaconda, and was Head of Information Services at Great Falls Public Library. It didn’t take long for John to settle into his new job in Helena. He is very happy to be our new director and appreciates the wonderful library staff and patrons.

Our Funds in Review

A Solar System for the Library!

One year ago, the Lewis & Clark Library Foundation partnered with the Sleeping Giant Citizens Council and Vigilante Runners to bring solar power to the Helena library. As of this summer, the funding goal of $135,000 was met thanks to support from the Sun Run in 2015, a

grant from Northwestern Energy, and an anonymous funder.

During the roof replacement on the library, preparations were put in place for the solar panels that will generate electricity for the library, saving energy costs and providing an interactive educational component to the building. Bids have been received for the solar array installation and work is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Changes on the Board of Directors

Donna Davis served on the Foundation board of

directors until her term expired in 2016. The

Foundation is grateful for her long and active service

that moved the organization forward in many positive

ways. Among her many accomplishments, she launched

the Community Leaders Poetry Reading and served as

president of the board. Davis also came up with the

Foundation’s slogan: “Making a great library even

better.”

Terry Olcott Cohea was welcomed in January as the

newest member of the Foundation’s board. Cohea was a

financial consultant at D.A. Davidson for 16 years, with

a specialty in helping clients and friends plan for and

enjoy their retirement years. Previously, she worked in

state government for 17 years as Legislative Fiscal

Analyst, chief of staff to Governor Ted Schwinden, and

in various other finance related positions. She has

served on the boards of the Holter Museum of Art and

the Prickly Pear Land Trust, and currently serves on the

Board of Investments.

The Foundation participated in the Give Local

Helena one-day fundraising event on May 3 and

raised $1,360 from our generous supporters.

As of April 30, 2016, the Foundation’s total assets were $682,521 with $581,757 invested with DA Davidson. Income from the Charitable Campaign for 2015-16 was $27,319. Income from the Bernice Boone Trust was $44,604.

Expenses as of April 30, 2016 totaled $56,695, which included $35,805 direct library support, $6,343 for administration, $1,420 for contracted services, $2,511 for public programming, and $10,616 fundraising and investments.
