INTRODUCTION

This document is a demonstration examining how Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 supports a simple

make-to-stock scenario. The primary objective of the demo scripts is to provide the user with an overview

of make to stock in a discrete manufacturing make-to-stock company.

AUDIENCE

The scripts in this document should be used to demonstrate the value of Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2

and how the solution supports a make-to stock-scenario to a business decision maker (BDM). The

executives that you present to will find value in this script if they are challenged by completing the

following tasks:

Generate demand for products based on forecasts.

Generate planned production orders and planned purchase orders.

Release production orders to the shop floor for execution.

Generate sales quotations and sales orders.

Generate invoice payment settlement.

SCENARIO

This script walks through the following Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 modules:

- Inventory and warehouse management

- Production control

- Master planning

- Procurement and sourcing

- Accounts payable

- Sales and marketing

- Accounts receivable

DEMO PRESET CONFIGURATION: This script was written to work with the Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 RTM Virtual Machine (VM),

released in December 2012. Make sure that the VM is up and running and that you have logged on. The

script addresses key pain points and challenges that different roles might face. However the demo can be

completed as the system administrator.

User: Administrator

Password: pass@word1


BEFORE YOU BEGIN

Before you begin, please add the following to your environment in the demo data set and

company Contoso USMF:

1. Click Human resources > Common > Workers >

Workers.

2. On the Workers list page, find and select Shannon

Dasher (Personnel number 000018).

3. On the Time registration tab, click Activate on

registration terminals to open the Create time

registration worker form.

Note

The Activate on registration terminals button is

available only if you are working in the

company that the worker is employed in.

4. The Active check box is selected by default. This

indicates that the worker has been activated as a

time registration worker.


5. In the Activation date field, select today’s date.

6. In the Calculation group field, select Man.

7. In the Default calculation group , select Man.

8. In the Approval group field, select AdmMan.

9. In the Standard profile field, select the work time

profile Day that is used to calculate time and pay

for the worker when the user doesn’t make any

registrations.

10. Right-click, and then select View details.


11. In the Pay agreement field, select Man.

12. In the Period code field, select the EmpWeekly pay

period that is used when the worker's pay is

calculated.

13. In the Profile group field, select Man. Profile groups

contain one or more work time profiles that can be

applied when a worker makes clock-in and clock-

out registrations. The profile that you select

depends on the date or the time of day that the

worker makes a clock-in registration. For example,

the worker may work during a day shift or a night

shift.

14. Select the New bundle check box to stop the

worker's active jobs when he or she starts a new

job. If you clear the check box, new jobs are


bundled with the jobs that the worker previously

started, but that have not yet been stopped or

completed. The New bundle check box relates to

job bundling. If you use job bundling, a worker can

start multiple jobs at the same time in the Job

registration form in Production control. If multiple

jobs are started at the same time, but they are not

completed at the same time, the job bundling

functionality calculates the time that is spent on

each job.

15. In the Category field, select the cost category Car

Audio that is used when the worker makes

registrations for projects and project activities.

16. Select the Use timecard check box to allow the

worker to make registrations on the electronic

timecard in Time and attendance.

17. In the Configuration field, select the Default

registration form that is displayed when the worker

logs on to the Job registration form in Production

control.

UPDATE DATA FOR A TIME REGISTRATION WORKER

Use this procedure to update data for a worker who has been activated as a time registration worker.

1. Click Human resources > Common > Workers >

Time registration workers.

2. Select Shannon Dasher (Personnel number 000018),

and then click Employment and the Time registration

tab.

3. Press Edit in the Maintain Action pane, and enter


the badge ID 987 in the Badge ID field.

OVERVIEW

The company that will be used for the make-to-stock scenario is Contoso USMF. Contoso USMF

produces the following products:

The following picture shows how the products are manufactured and distributed within USMF.


The will use the following product:

- Standard Speaker (Product D0003)

DEMO: MAKE TO STOCK

Scenario and background:

Eduardo is the production planner of Contoso Manufacturing; he is in charge of creating the sales forecast for the

audio products the company makes. Based on the forecasted sales and the current inventory on-hand, he runs

master planning for materials and capacity requirements for the coming six months. He firms the planned purchase

and production orders created. After raw materials are purchased and arrive at the warehouse, the production

orders are released so the machine operator on the shop floor can perform the operations. When all operations are

finished, the audio products are transported and stocked on pallets in the warehouse. Susan, the sales clerk, is


responsible for keying in orders. A customer calls to order a mid-range loud speaker; therefore Susan creates a

sales order with the required quantity. Finally, the sales order is invoiced and paid.

1. Log on as Eduardo (Domain:

Contoso, User: Eduardo,

Password: pass@word1).

2. Select company USMF.

3. Open Inventory and warehouse management

> Periodic > Forecast > Entry > Item groups

3) Select Audio item group, and then click Demand.

NOTE: The Audio item group contains the following

prouducts :

- Mid-Range Speaker (D0001)

- Standard Speaker (Product D0003)

- High End Speaker (Product D0004)

- Mid-Range Speaker 2 (L0001)

- Acoustic Foam Panel (Product P0001)

- Speaker cable (T0001)

5) Create a new record by using the following

values:

Model: CurrenF

Date: Today + 2 month

Item number: D0003

Quantity: 200

6) Close the Demand forecast form.

7) Close the Item group forecast form.

8) Open Master Planning > Periodic > Master

scheduling.

Ensure that Plan is set to Static plan.

Filter for D0003.


9) Click OK.

This step may take some time.

10) Go to Master planning > Common > Planned

orders.

Ensure that Plan is set to Static plan.

11) Filter for D0003.

12) Select the line with the quantity as 200 (the

demand you forecasted).

13) On the Action Pane, click View > Requirements

> Explosion.

1. In the Explosion form, on the Action Pane,

click Planned orders.

2. Check all planned orders.

3. On the Action Pane, clickPlanned order >

Process > Firm.

4. Click OK to firm the planned orders.

5. Close the Planned orders form.


6. Select Released production order Quantity

200.

7. Open Production Control > Common >

Production orders > All production orders.

8. Job schedule the order.

9. Close the form.

1. Go to Production Control > Common >

Production orders > All production orders.

2. Find scheduled production orders for items

D0003 and Quantity 200.

3. On the Action Pane, click Production order >

Process > Release.

4. Click OK.

DEMO: MANUFACTURING EXECUTION

After raw materials are purchased and arrive at the warehouse, the production orders are released so the machine

operator on the shop floor can perform the operations. When all operations are finished, the audio products are

transported and stocked on pallets in the warehouse.


1. Log on as Shannon (Domain:

Contoso, User: Shannon,

Password: pass@word1).

2. Go to Production Control > Periodic >

Manufacturing execution > Job registration.

3. Set Configuration as Default.

4. Click OK.

5. Select Production unit 120.

6. Select Resource 1212.

7. Click the Open resource button.

8. In the Job registration, enter Employee number

as 987 (Shannon Dasher), and then click Log in.


9. In the Start quantity field specify 200.

10. Click Start jobs.

11. In the Job registration, enter Employee number

= 987.

12. Click Log in.

13. Click Feedback.

14. Enter Good Quantity 200.

15. Set Status = Completed.

16. Click OK.

Repeat step 7-16 for resources 1221, 1221 and

1222.

NOTE: 1221 cannot have a start quantity as it’s

second operation.


17. Go to Production Control > Common >

Production orders.

18. Find production order for item D0003 where the

quantity is 200.

19. In the Action Pane, click Process, and then click

End. Make sure Report as finished is cleared. The

production has already been reported as

finished.

20. Click OK.

DEMO: QUOTE TO CASH

1. Go to Sales and marketing > Common > Sales

quotations > All quotations.

2. On the Action Pane, click Quotation, click New,

and then click Sales quotation.

3. In the Create quotation form, set Account type

as Customer.

4. Select customer account = US-005 (Contoso

Retail Seattle).

5. Click OK.


6. In the sales quotation lines view, set the Item

number to D0003.

7. Set Quantity to 200.

8. In the line details, select the Delivery tab, set

Requested receipt date to today's date plus one

month.

Set Requested ship date to today's date plus

one month.

9. In the Sales quotation form, on the Action Pane,

click Quotation, click Generate, and then click

Send quotation.

10. Click OK.

11. Click Close to close the infolog.


quotations > All quotations.

13. Find the sent quotation to customer US-005

(Contoso Retail Seattle) for item D0003.

14. On the Action Pane, click Follow up, click

Generate, and then click Confirm.

15. In the confirmation window, set Reason to

Reputation.

16. Click OK.

17. Click Close to close infolog.



orders > Open sales orders.

19. Find the latest open sales order for customer

US-005.

20. On the Action Pane, click Pick and pack, click

Generate, and then click Packing slip.

21. Set Quantity to all.

22. Click OK.

23. Click OK to clear the warning about printing.


orders > All sales orders.

25. Find the latest sales order for customer US-005

as you did in previous step.

26. On the Action Pane, click Invoice, click Generate,

and then click Invoice.

27. In the Posting invoice form, set Quantity to

Packing slip.

28. Click OK to start the posting process.

29. Click OK to clear the print warning.


30. Go to Accounts receivable > Common >

Payments > Payment journal.

31. Click New payment journal.

32. Set Name to CustPay.

33. On the Action Pane, click Enter customer

payments.

34. Set Customer to US-0005.

35. Set Description to Invoice.

36. In the Select to pay section, check the invoice

related to the previous step.

37. In Amount field, enter the full Invoice amount.

38. Click Save in journal.

39. Close the customer payment form.

40. In the payment journal open lines,for the

customer payment line created in the previous

steps, on the Action Pane, click Validate, and

then click Validate.

41. Close the form.

42. On the Action Pane, click Post, and then click

Post.

43. Close the form.

44. Close the Journal form.

CONCLUSION

In make to stock, products are manufactured based on demand forecasts. Since accuracy of the forecasts will

prevent excess inventory and opportunity loss due to stockout, the issue here is how to forecast demands

accurately.

The demo scripts shows how Microsoft Dynamics AX 2012 R2 demand forecasts are integrated with

planning, inventory production, and actual sales demand.
