1.3 What Is Affiliate Marketing? Affiliate marketing is a referral-based strategy in which increase in traffic means

When a visitor clicks on the URL, the publisher site tracks a hit and redirects the visitor to the merchant site. The network records any transaction or sale using stored Internet cookies that contain these same identification numbers, so the merchant knows which affiliate referred the converted consumer to the merchant.



1.5 The Terminology

Advertiser: an online retailer who sells his or

her products or services and is willing to pay a third party to help promote his or her business and sales. An advertiser provides the publishers with banner ads, and text links that the publisher incorporates into his or her website.

Publisher: an individual, website owner or company

that hosts and promotes offers and products in exchange for earning a commission and works with publishers on a contract basis.

Affiliate Network: a medium between merchants (advertisers) and publishers

(affiliates). It allows publishers to find and participate in relevant affiliate

programs in order to generate income. Popular affiliate networks are: ShareASale,

Commission Junction, ClickBank, Rakuten Linkshare and ebay Enterprise (formerly

Consumer: a visitor who intends to see the posted banner ads on the

publisher’s site and buy the product or services offered. Consumers do an action (either by submitting a form or clicking a link) that takes them from the publisher’s website to the advertiser’s to complete the action. This process is known as conversion.

It all begins with a ‘C’ ( terms you need to be familiar with in affiliate

marketing)

Cookie: a form of stored customer information on a web browser. It includes login pages, passwords, browser history, or items selected but left in a shopping cart and have not been purchased yet.

Commission: a specified payment made to the publisher by an advertiser on every transaction made by the consumer. This could be a flat fixed amount per transaction or varied percentage of sale according to items or services.

CPM: Cost per mille, where 1 mille = 1000 impressions, means an advertiser pays a flat commission for every 1000 views or clicks that its link or banner ad receives.

CPC: Cost per click. It refers to how many times a banner ad or text link has been clicked and converted into sale.

CPA: Cost-per-acquisition. This figure is based on a percentage of sales for a good or service.

CPL: Cost-per-lead. This is based on a flat, fixed amount per transaction.

Conversion: This happens when the consumer clicks on a link or posted ad and purchases any product or service. Conversion leads to commissions.



Types of Affiliates

Super Affiliates: These are the big players, who help to gain a substantial amount of traffic followed by large income. They already have a marketing campaign in place that helps out both the merchant and the affiliate.

Specialized Affiliates: Specialized affiliates create relevant content for

their merchant sites and have a dedicated marketing strategy.

2. Setting Up an Affiliate Program

2.1 Affiliate Network

Affiliate networks make it easy for a publisher to find and participate in the affiliate programs that are relevant for the publisher’s website so that he or she can generate income.

Networks such as LinkShare, Commission Junction, and ShareASale exist for bringing advertisers and publishers together.

Pop-ups are separate windows or tabs that spring up on the screen when a certain

action takes place on the website.

Check the type of audience

6.2 Analyzing Numbers

The easiest way to calculate is to lay out a table with rows and columns where

rows represent data points and columns represent time periods.

Impressions-to-Clicks

An impression-to-clicks conversion rate means that users take action, but

have not yet made a purchase.

For calculation, you can input these numbers according to the time they

were taken.

Divide the number of click-throughs by the number of impressions. The

result would be the conversion rate.

If the attained quotient lies between zero and one, you can move the

decimal spot over two spaces to the right for the percentage number.

Click-to-Sales

Click-to-sales means that a customer has closed a deal on your site.

After a customer clicks on merchant’s ad, she either makes the action happen (sale or lead) or leaves. If an action has taken place, then close the sale and collect the information.

For the calculation, divide the number of transactions (sales) by the number of click-throughs.

If the resultant lies between 0 and 1, convert this to a percentage by moving the decimal over to the right by two spots.

Residual Earnings

The publisher would get residual earnings every month that the customer

remains enrolled in the program.

However, the earnings can add up significantly if customers remain

members or subscribers for the long term.

Two-Tier Programs

Two-tier programs work on the basis of publishers referring other

publishers to the same advertiser.

Publishers or affiliates who sign on another with their publisher

receive a commission for every referral they bring.
