Community Campaigner
Hello, Ive decided to run in this by-election
because when I was a candidate 2 years ago,
I got lots of feedback about the lack of
independent Councillors who care about the
needs of the community.!!
As a new mum, a teacher and a campaigner
for the last 10 years, I want to see more
honesty and commitment. Im sick of Lib/Lab
Councillors who put their own careers ahead
of the future of our community. I have no
vested interests in development companies
nor would I accept funds from them.
If youd like to find out more about my
campaign then come along to:
Hamlyn Park cnr Calvert and
Carey Sts, Sunday, Feb 14,
12 noon - for a BBQ and chat.

I've known Bronwyn for over ten years now. She's been a great union activist fighting for therights of her fellow workmates. I'm sure she'd
bring the same energy and determination tocampaigning for the rights and well-being of herlocal community. She wouldnt just be a goodrepresentative; she'd be an out on the groundactivist as well.
Sam Wainwright, FremantleCity Councillor and memberof Socialist Alliance and theMaritime Union of Australia
Socialist Alliance is committed to a sustainable urban environment. We will fight for the rights of
working people, pensioners, migrants, indigenous communities and the environment.
We say that the resources of Greater Geelong City Council can be better used to benefit all residents, providing much needed services
and cleaning up our environment. We would expand council democracy so that residents have a direct say in the big issues affecting us.
Council Must Serve the
People
Lets demand a Council that puts people before profit
and ordinary people before developers. We need tobring back all council services into council hands. I
would introduce:
a referendum on any issue if 10% of residents call
for it and
a community consultation process that allows
residents to set council planning and budget
priorities
PlanningLocal council must employ sustainable practises and
policies while increasing community participation. Id
like to see a discussion about the use of the Geelong
Golf Course land. Why cant we keep it in publichands for housing or recreation? There are no public
BBQ facilities in this ward for one thing!
HousingWe need a lot more public housing for low income
earners. Council and the State government need to
invest and consult widely. All new residential andcommercial developments should contain at least
20% low rent housing. We need strict council
monitoring of developers with no loopholes.
Our Policy Priorities:
Free & frequent public
transportCouncil must call on the state government to extend
dramatically public transport in the region. This
would have an immediate effect on reducing carbon
emissions. I would demand:
A light rail connection between Geelong,
Bellarine & Surfcoast
Buses every 10 minutes
Buses that connect with train se rvices
Review and overhaul the inefficient, indirectroutes that we currently have
Trains every 30 minutes to Melbourne in off
peak times
Make Geelong a Climate
Action CouncilUsing a combination of wind and solar power and
improved energy efficiency, Geelong could
dramatically reduce its reliance on coal fired power.
Retooling FORD, supporting the construction of a
solar panel factory and other sustainable projects
would provide alternative and green employment
opportunities to the growing army of unemployed
manufacturing workers in Geelong. I would
demand:
Zero emissions now!
Capture storm water and implement other watersaving measures
Support community food gardens
Environmental standards for all new building
approvals.
Workplace Rights
The council is an extension of the communityand should set an example with workplace
rights and standards. It should not use anti-
union laws to drive down wages and
conditions or to harass workers.
The idea that this is good management that
saves money is completely wrong. Councillors
have a right and responsibility to take an
interest in employment conditions in our
community.
I was disgusted by the attacks on workers in
the infamous SteakGate affair.
