Make a Song, Make a Hit

Have you ever wondered why some songs make it and some just flop?

Well, what ultimately spells the difference is the way the song is written.

This is the one thing that separates those that are worth listening to--even if

they did not reach mainstream renown--from those that you can just pass

up on--even if they did reach mainstream renown.

Songwriting is a basic skill among musicians. If, as a musician, you would

want to have a better appeal to your audience, you need to write songs that

will leave an imprint in your listeners’ recall. You need to make your songs

speak meaningfully to those who listen, more so, move them to emotional

highs and lows that only music can fathom.

So how do you make a song successful?

First, you have to familiarize yourself with the different factors that affect a

song, from the title to the lyrics, the melody, and the chords. You must see

to it that all these aspects are covered and well thought of. Of course, you

cannot think of them altogether. You must find a focal point from which you

can develop your song. So where do you start? Well, different strokes for

different folks. Some would first come up with a simple line, then pick up

from there. Others would hum a melody then put words into it. Meanwhile,

there are still others who think of an interesting topic, make a title out of it,

then proceed with writing the entire piece.

You see, that is what’s interesting when you make a song: there are no

straight-up rules to follow, but then you still need to have discipline when

doing it. Also, creativity is a must!

Now to make it more manageable for you, you have to know the

fundamental structure of a song. Normally, what constitute a song are the

verse, the chorus, and the bridge. In order to add emotional dynamics to

your song, you must be accustomed to these parts and know how they go.

The verse is where you put the bulk of information about the topic of your

song. Meanwhile, the chorus, which is what is usually remembered, is the

highlight of the song. This is where you provide the main idea and

sometimes the title of your composition. It is repeated at least three to four

times in the song. Now the bridge is what serves as a breaker for the verse

and the chorus. It is characterized by a sudden change of melody, then is

coupled by a heightened point in the song (i.e., a profound insight, a

revealing moment, a scene that creates tension, etc.).

These are just some of the many tips on how to make a song. If you want

to explore more on the topic, you might want to ponder on enrolling yourself

in a songwriting class. There, you will be given a systematized and more in-

depth study of the topic. And since there is a professional lyricist guiding

you as you go along, it will be easier for you to perfect the craft in no time.
