Chapter 1. Thinkpad Console Information

This manual contains information used to service thinkpad consoles attached to thefollowing products:

9672 Parallel Servers9674 Coupling Facilities

zSeries Servers

Maintenance Information for Desktop Consoles (Hardware Management Consolesand Standalone Support Elements) can be found in publication number GC38-3115.

General InformationWhen you are working on a support element, the associated CPC will continue torun, however the customer may not see messages coming from that supportelement. Also, the CPC may not recover if a machine check occurs.

Depending on the system configuration, when you are directed to exchange FRUs,run tests, or change configuration data the customer's interface to the systemhardware may not be available. Before starting any of these tasks, notify thecustomer.

If you exchange a system board, battery, or adapter, follow the configurationprocedures in this manual to ensure correct operation. Refer to “Contents”and use the procedures for the hardware you are working on.

If you exchange a hard drive, ensure the licensed internal code is loaded onthe new drive. Use the “Restore the Hard Disk” procedures in the ServiceGuide for your system.

There are different maintenance manuals for each Thinkpad type. If you aredirected to use these manuals, insure the correct manual is being used. Startingwith the 2647 (T2x) Thinkpad Console, Hardware Maintenance Manuals (HMM's)are only available on the installation SE-CDROM's "SERVICE" subdirectory (PDFformat). Use Adobe Acrobat Reader on the Customer Service Engineer's Thinkpadto view the manual.

Attention: The system board, adapters, memory modules, and thealternate-microprocessor can be damaged by electrostatic discharge. If you aredirected to exchange FRUs in a thinkpad console, refer to "Handling Electro-StaticDischarge (ESD) Sensitive Devices" in the PC maintenance information.

Removing power from a support element may cause loss of data on the hard disks.If power must be removed, shut down the support elements. For instructions, referto “System Shut Down” in “Common Service Procedures” of the Service Guide forthe system.

Before starting a repair on a support element,

1. Determine which type you will be working on.

2. Read the information under “General Information” on page 1-1.

3. Review “Service Tips: ThinkPad Support Element” on page 2-2 for problemsolving information.

Service Tips: ThinkPad Support ElementSystem Unit configuration is done manually. The process is dependent upon theThinkPad Model.

� 360x (2620) - Easy Setup utility� 365x (2625) - 2625CFG diskette or 26X5CFG diskette� 380x (2635) - 26X5CFG diskette� 600x (2645) - 26X5CFG diskette and Easy Setup utility� T2x (2647) - 26X7CFG diskette and IBM BIOS Setup utility

The Thinkpad console uses PC Card (once known as PCMCIA) adapters. Theadapters are either 16-Bit (PCMCIA) or 32-Bit (CardBus). Only the 2647 (T2x)Thinkpad uses CardBus and Mini-PCI network adapters. Adapter configuration isdone via software during initialization and does not have to be checked. Startingwith zSeries 900, the parallel port connection between Thinkpad and CEC hasbeen replaced by the MiniPCI Ethernet adapter. The adapter is accessed behind aremoveable plate located on the bottom of the Thinkpad, directly above the

| Model/Type/S-N sticker. For T20 and T22, MiniPCI Ethernet may be combined with| modem adapter. For T23, the MiniPCI is a daughter card secured with two screws| and located next to the modem adapter. The cable socket is at the rear of the

Thinkpad, between the modem and DC barrel input connectors.

System Unit maintenance tests are performed from:

| � 2647 (T20, T22) PC Doctor Diagnostic Diskettes (2 diskettes). 2647 (T23) PC| Doctor Diagnostic Diskettes (3 diskettes). CardBus (32-Bit) maintenance

procedures are performed using a diagnostic diskette (T2xLAN). MiniPCIEthernet maintenance procedures are performed using the PC Doctordiagnostic diskettes.

� 26xx (all other TPs) are performed from the "Test" option under the "EasySetup" utility program. The Easy Setup utility is stored in the Thinkpad'spermanent memory. PC Card (16-Bit) maintenance procedures are performedusing a diagnostic diskette (Token-Ring) or a DOS boot diskette to rundiagnostic tests from the DASD.

Thinkpads receive power from the CEC frame and do not have a battery packinstalled. If you are directed to power off the Thinkpad, use the following procedure:

� If a SEPC is mounted behind the Thinkpad, unplug its power cable to theThinkpad. The Thinkpad may have to be removed from the tray.

� If no SEPC is mounted behind the Thinkpad, do one of the following:

– Remove the Thinkpad from the tray and unplug the DC power cableconnecting the Thinkpad.

– Unplug the Thinkpad power cable from the Bulk Power Interface (BPI).Verify BPI connector location by following the Thinkpad power cable.

Modifications have been made to ThinkPads used as Support Elements to keep theThinkPad powered up with the S/390 hardware. These modifications must be in

place to ensure the availability of the S/390. Use the table below to verify thesemodifications are present on the ThinkPad you are working on:

2620 (360)

� External clip installed forcing the on/off switch to the 'on' position

2625 (365)

� Internal stick installed forcing the on/off switch to the 'on' position

2635 (380)

� External clip installed forcing the on/off switch to the 'on' position

2645 (600)

� Circuitry module attached to the system expansion connector (240 pin mini Dshell connector next to the __/_ symbol). The module is located at the back ofthe ThinkPad towards the middle and provides a power on when SEPC barrelconnector voltage is sensed through the ThinkPad.

� Using the Easy Setup utility, configure the ThinkPad to support the "Wake onLAN" function. See “2645 (600) ThinkPad Configuration” on page 2-51.

2647 (T2x)

� Circuitry module attached to the docking station socket underneath theThinkpad providing all power. The power-on push button is covered with a cap.

For support elements, 16Mbps Token Ring speed is the only value supported.

If you have an R1, R2, or R3 based system using a 2625 or 2635 ThinkPad as asupport element, you may have a black border of approximately 2.5 cm (1 inch)around the display. This is normal operation.

For a 2620 or 2625 ThinkPad, the following frus may be replaced with the systemunit in the tray.

� Hard Disk Drive� Floppy Disk Drive

� Memory Card� Standby or Backup Battery� PC Card Network Adapter (Token-Ring/Ethernet)� Network Cable (Token-Ring/Ethernet)

For other 2620 or 2625 ThinkPad frus, it is recommended that you remove thesupport element because of the many small parts.

For other ThinkPads, the following frus may be replaced:

� Memory DIMM � Backup Battery� PC Card Network Adapter (Token-Ring/Ethernet)� MiniPCI Ethernet Adapter� Network Cable (Token-Ring/Ethernet)

Note: For any frus not listed, the ThinkPad is to be replaced.

Local Area Network

Adapters � CardBus (32-Bit)

– For the T2x (2647 and follow-on) ThinkPads, only CardBus (32-Bit)adapters are supported in the ThinkPad's PCMCIA (top/bottom) slots.CardBus adapters have a gold band next to the ThinkPad I/O pins.

� PCMCIA (16-Bit)

– For all ThinkPads except the T2x (2647 and follow-ons), only PCMCIA(16-Bit) adapters are supported in the ThinkPad's (top/bottom) PCMCIAslots.

� MiniPCI

| – Only the T2x (2647) support the MiniPCI adapter. For T20, T22, in addition| to Ethernet, the adapter may support modem functions. For T23, the| adapter is a daughter card secured with two screws and is located next to| the modem adapter. While the modem function is not used, insure all| cables are securely connected.

Adapter Locations� For T2x (2647) ThinkPads used on Generation 5 and 6 machines, one of the

PCCard Ethernet adapters is replaced by the MiniPCI Ethernet adapter. Forthese ThinkPads, the bottom PCMCIA slot is always empty for bothToken-Ring/Ethernet and Ethernet/Ethernet configurations.

� The MiniPCI Ethernet adapter is accessed behind a removeable plate locatedon the bottom of the T2x ThinkPad, directly above the Model/Type/S-N label.The cable socket is at the rear of the ThinkPad, between the modem and DCbarrel input connectors.

Adapter location is dependent on the S/390 machine and ThinkPad model/type.ThinkPad adapters for network use are located in the following sockets (slots):

Failures on ThinkPad ConsoleUse this chapter when you are directed here either by a Repair and Verify window(support element), or from Chapter 1 of this manual to repair a problem on thesupport element.

Before exchanging any FRUs, record the FRU partnumber, serial number, and engineering change(EC) level of the new FRU.

System Unit Testing: ThinkPad T2x (2647) Service tips:

| � 2647 System Diagnostics consist of 2 diskettes (T20, T22) or 3 diskettes (T23).

| � For T20, T22, in addition to Ethernet, the MiniPCI adapter may support modem| functions. For T23, the MiniPCI adapter is a daughter card secured with two| screws and is located next to the modem adapter. While the modem function| is not used, insure all cables are securely connected.

If you know which device is failing or you were senthere by another procedure, do the following:

� Power off the PC� Insert the Diagnostics Boot diskette into drive A� Power on the PC

| � When the "PC Dos X.0 Startup Menu" displays,| select the correct ThinkPad being tested, then| press "Enter".| � Follow the diskette loading instructions.

� Wait until a diagnostic selection menu isdisplayed and proceed to Step 2.

PCMCIA 16/4 Token-Ring AdapterUse the following procedure to test the PCMCIA 16/4 Token-Ring adapter.

Service Tips: Adapter configuration is done by software during ThinkPadinitialization. No verification of the configuration is necessary.

To do problem isolation, use the diskette referenced in “Information and DiskettesUsed” on page 2-21.

Two different connectors may be found at the end of the cable connecting theToken-Ring adapter to the LAN network: STP and RJ45. The STP connector, whendisconnected, provides a wrap path to assist in verifying adapter card and cableoperation. The RJ45 connector does not provide the wrap.

Use the Help function (F1) for additional service information.

� Power the support element off.

� Ensure the Token-Ring adapter is located inthe top (A) PCMCIA slot.

� Ensure the LAN cable is securely connected tothe Token-Ring adapter.

� Ensure the LAN cable is connected to the LANnetwork.

The Token-Ring adapter LEDs (near the external connector) provide informationuseful for monitoring the status of the adapter and for problem solving. Refer to"Token-Ring Adapter LEDs", page 4-16 in publication GC38-3115, "MaintenanceInformation for Desktop Consoles".

For T2x (2647) ThinkPads used on Generation 5 and 6 machines, one of theCardBus Ethernet adapters is replaced by the MiniPCI Ethernet adapter. For theseThinkPads, the bottom PCMCIA slot is always empty for both Token-Ring/Ethernetand Ethernet/Ethernet configurations.

PC Card (PCMCIA) Ethernet AdapterUse the following procedure to test the PC Card (PCMCIA) Ethernet adapter.

Service Tips: There is no diagnostic diskette. The ThinkPad is booted using theThinkPad EtherJet PC Boot diskette and the procedures are run from the hard diskdirectory: C:\ETHERJET.

The adapter LEDs on the external connector provide information useful formonitoring the status of the adapter and network activity. Refer to “Ethernet StatusLEDs” on page 3-6 for assistance in interpreting the LED status.

Note: For all 2620-xxx (360xx) ThinkPads, ensure the BIOS date is10/31/95 or newer. If it is not, order “ThinkPad Flash BIOSUpdate Diskette,” 51H8676. For installation instructions,follow the README.TXT instructions on the diskette. Thisresolves the problem where the ThinkPad display remainsdark when it is opened. When the older BIOS is installedand the display remains dark, open and close the displayseveral times. This will not affect support element operations.

Use F1 for additional help during the configuration procedure.

If you exchanged the backup battery or systemboard, additional ThinkPad configuration must beperformed using the configuration utility on the“ThinkPad 365 Configuration” diskette, p/n51H9163.

Use the following procedure to run theconfiguration utility:

� Insert the “ThinkPad 365 Configuration”diskette

� From the “Easy Setup” window, select Restart� From the “OK?” window, select OK

The ThinkPad will reboot and run the configurationutility on the diskette. Follow the instructionsdisplayed on the screen.

Replacing a ThinkPadNote: Before replacing a support element, use the procedure in “Failures onThinkPad Console” on page 2-7 to isolate the failure. You should replace theThinkpad only when you have isolated the failure to a ThinkPad component NOT inthe following list:

� Memory DIMM

� Backup Battery

� PC Card Network Adapter (Token-Ring/Ethernet)

� MiniPCI Ethernet Adapter

� Network Cable (Token-Ring/Ethernet)

Using repair procedures, it has been determinedthat the ThinkPad must be replaced. Dependingon the customer situation, you may want to orderthe ThinkPad now before proceeding. If possible,ensure that the following have been performed:

� If directed, Licensed Internal Code has beenreloaded

� ThinkPad configuration has been verified andthe Configuration Diskette has been run. See“Configuration Procedures for ThinkPad BasedSupport Elements.” on page 2-46.

� System Unit diagnostics have been run� Network Adapter diagnostics have been run� Failing FRU has been isolated to a ThinkPad

and is not on the "Replaceable ThinkPadFRUs" list.

After you have verified the above list, continue atstep 2.

Remove the ThinkPad from the tray.

Refer to the procedures on page 3-2 or 3-3.

From the failing unit, remove the network adaptercards (Ethernet or Token-Ring) in the upper andlower (if installed) PCMCIA slots.

Note: For T2x (2647) ThinkPads, do not removethe MiniPCI Ethernet adapter. Thereplacement ThinkPad has one installed.

Run diagnostics on the replacement ThinkPad.

Refer to the ThinkPad's Hardware MaintenanceManual.

Install the network adapter cards that you removedfrom the failing ThinkPad into the replacementThinkPad.

Support Element Removal and Replacement - T2x ThinkPadsThe T2x support element uses a retaining bracket mounted at the rear of the trayand a Velcro strip under the ThinkPad to mount the support element. Use thefollowing procedure to remove a T2x ThinkPad.

1. At the left side of the tray: disconnect any ethernet or token ring n cables fromthe upper card slot.

Notes:

a. For a token ring connection, you may have to press the button next to cardto release the card, then remove the cable

b. The bottom slot is empty on all 9672 G5/G6 models.

2. At the front of the tray: unscrew the two captive thumbscrews and low theretaining bar.

3. the rear of the tray: use the torque tool to remove the two screws that hold thesupport element retaining bracket to the tray. Then, using the access hole atthe rear of the tray, push the support element retaining bracket forward torelease the ThinkPad.

4. Lift the support element slowly to disconnect the Velcro strip, then lift theThinkPad out of the tray.

5. At the rear of the ThinkPad, disconnect the power cable and the ethernetconnector

To install a support element ensure the circuit module is securely connected to thebottom of the ThinkPad. Then, reverse the steps shown above.

Support Element Removal and Replacement - All Other ThinkPadsUse this procedure when removal of the support element is necessary.

Note: If the associated CPC is operating at this time, it will continue to run,however the customer will not see messages coming from the support element.Also, the CPC may not recover if a machine check occurs.

1 Removing the ThinkPad support element

� Open the front covers of frame A.

� Pull the latch pin (A). and rotate the supportelement tray down into the service position,(B).

� Loosen two screws (C) on the hinged retainerbar.

Note: The power converter shown is not used forthis model.

� Disconnect the Network cable or cables (A)

� Disconnect the parallel port to UPC cable (B).

� Slide the support element toward you twoinches.

� Disconnect the 20 Vdc power cable (C).

� Remove the support element.

Note: On the 2635 (380x) ThinkPad, the networkadapters are on the left side of the ThinkPad andthe diskette drive is on the right side.

� Place the ThinkPad on the folding tray.

� Make sure that ThinkPad power is forced on byone of the following:

– 2620: power switch retaining clip

– 2625: power switch retaining stick

– 2635: power switch retaining clip

– 2645: external circuit module

� Connect the parallel port to UPC cable (B).

Ethernet Status LEDsAdapter LEDs provide data traffic and link status network connectivity information.The link status LED is active only for a 10BASE-T (RJ45) network.

The status LEDs for the 6578 Desktop PC (PCI) adapter are located next to theRJ-45 connector. The PCI adapter supports 10/100Mbps data rates.

� Data Traffic: (Top) Green LED� Data Rate: (Bottom) Green LED, Off=10Mbps, On=100Mbps

The status LEDs for the 6x62 PC Ethernet (planar) support are next to the RJ-45connector (back of PC towards the center).

� Link Status: Amber LED: Not connected to network� Link Status: Green LED: Connected to network

The 6x62 Desktop PC also has a "LAN Activity Light" located in the front, third LEDfrom the power switch.

The status LEDs for 688x Desktop PC (ISA) EtherJet adapter are located abovethe external RJ-45 connector.

The status LEDs for the MiniPCI Ethernet adapter are located next to the RJ-45connector. The PCI adapter supports 10/100Mbps data rates.

The "Link LED" reports the following:

� The adapter is using 10BASE-T and is linked (connected) to an Ethernet hub orswitch.

� The adapter has power. If the adapter does not have power, the "Link LED" willnot be active.

If the "Link LED" is not lit, check the following.

� The adapter is connected to a 10BASE-T network� The cable is securely plugged into the adapter's 10BASE-T socket .� The Ethernet cable is not broken or damaged and is connected to an active

(powered on) hub or switch� The adapter card is securely plugged into the PC's card socket.

The "Activity LED" reports Ethernet adapter network data transmission andreception

If the "Link LED" is not lit and the adapter is using 10BASE-T cabling, verify thatthe "Link LED" is lit. If it is not, follow the checks under the "Link LED" section. Ifthe "Link LED" is lit and the "Activity LED" is not lit, OR the adapter is not using10BASE-T cabling, check the following:

� There is good physical cable connection at the hub and adapter.� The hub is switched on and the cable is not broken or damaged.
