How They Working?
A Compendium of DOT Bridge Maintenance Experience
Maintenance Friendly Joint Experiences
• Started using elastomeric concretes in the early 1990’s
• Industry and owners learned at same time and worked together
• Started to become NYSDOT’s joint of choice with Joint System Spec and Materials Approved List in 2004?
Review of things that work……..and things that
don’t.
Current Use of Maintenance Friendly Joint Materials by DOT
Bridge Maintenance
• UreFast “Liquid Concrete”• Watson Bowman “Wabo-Crete II”• RJ Watson “Tron Flex”• SSI “Sil-Spec”
Liquid Concrete
• Ure-Coat PF-60• Polyurethane-hybrid Polymer• Need to apply using FastCat application
equipment• Same product used for joint headers, deck
patches, or thin overlays
Liquid Concrete
• Easy installation• Fast cure• Easy clean-up• Very expensive
–Resin shipped from CA
Watson Bowman Wabo-Crete II
• 2 Component Polyurethane with Specialty Aggregate
• Fast cure• Self Leveling• 5 gallon bucket application• Needs good preparation
– Moisture sensitive– Bonding agent
RJ Watson Tron-Flex
• Two Component Polyurethane Elastomeric
• Fast cure• Moisture sensitive• Self Leveling• Primer required
SSI Sil-Spec• Epoxy Polymer - Longer cure• Very Durable• Doesn’t Flow• Easy Preparation
– Not so moisture sensitive– No priming
• Messy• Expensive
Keys to Success
• Use the right product for the site– Moisture, temperature, cure time, etc.
• Prep, prep, prep• Get the bad stuff out• Keep only what can be saved• And……….
They can win without me
