The scheme provides affordable refurbishedbikes to local people in Derby to help themaccess work, education, training and otherfacilities by bike. Donations of abandoned orunwanted bicycles are transferred to HMPStocken, and refurbished by the inmates. Thebikes are then sold to individuals who cannotafford the cost of a new bike.

Slough’s new cycle hire scheme has just beenlaunched. This session will overview of theinitiative, its aims and objectives, theinvolvement of partners including NEETs (youngpeople not in eductation, employment ortraining) in the maintenance and re-distributionof the bikes. While too early to present‘outcomes’ we will present early anecdotalevidence and usage figures.

The Access to Stations project, is led by BedfordBorough Council, co-ordinated by Sustrans,funded through the Local Sustainable TransportFund and delivered by a range of local authoritypartners. The project aims to increase levels ofsustainable and active travel amongst rail usersand promote rail travel in general. The key learning outcomes are how best todesign for cycling at stations; early lessons fromsupporting behaviour change interventions.

The Speed Learning session (15.40 - 17.30 on Day 1 in the Great Hall) provides a platform for knowledge sharing, generating discussion and helping LSTF teams to network with each other.

The 30 case studies will be presented simultaneously at ‘bar tables’ marked by numbered balloons, in SIX – 12 minute sessions. The case studies will be short presentations followed by discussion. A horn will be sounded when it is time to change tables.

In Autumn 2013 TfGM launched the Are YouWinter Ready? campaign, to reinforce themessage that cycling to work can be a year-round activity. Using a varied marketingmix, and tying it in with business-as-usualactivities, the campaign supports commutercycling initiatives, such as TfGM’s cycle trainingoffer and network of Cycle Hubs.

The aim of this project is to inspire and supportthe residents of Hamp, South Bridgwater, toredesign their urban environment to make itsafer and more attractive for everyday walkingand cycling. This, in turn, will help remove thebarriers relating to access to work andeducational opportunities, change resident’sattitudes towards walking and cycling, andcreate a culture of participation within the ward.

Making Liverpool walking and cycling friendlyKaren Stevens, Cycling Officer, Liverpool City Council

The council has developed an off-road walkingand cycling route connecting to the universitycampus, business district and additional worksthrough the Regional Growth Fund. We haveidentified, through work with the businessdistrict, Sustainable travel promotion throughour ‘Choose Freedom’ project. This has achievedsolid results, using a local specialist provider,BikeRight! to reach out to communities.

Pedestrian planning – Wayfinding inSouthampton Simon Jay, Senior Managing Consultant –Pedestrian, Cycling and Space Planning, Atkins

A high quality on-street pedestrian wayfindingsolution for Southampton city was developed byAtkins as a cost-effective family of signage, way-finding graphics and mapping products.This creates a comprehensive and recognisablesystem, which is now being rolled out across thecity and surrounding areas.

Sustrans is working with local authorities inNewcastle, Gateshead, Sunderland, NorthTyneside, South Tyneside and Durham toencourage children and families to walk andcycle for everyday trips. This LSTF-fundedproject is a partnership with the local publichealth team, and builds on a pilot, which wascommissioned by the Director of Public Healthfor North Tyneside.

The Walk to School Outreach Project Jenni Wiggle, Living Streets

The Walk to School Outreach Project is apartnership of 11 local authorities, led by DurhamCounty Council. We audit the local street fromthe perspective of the children. We taketeachers, pupils and parents on a walkaboutaround their school and ask them to identifybarriers to walking and how to tackle them.

TfGM offers bespoke training to complement theadvisory skills of staff from Jobcentres andpartner organisations, which equips them withthe skills to help jobseekers get to interviews andjobs by the best and most cost-effective mode oftransport. We undertook research with young people in theTees Valley area to understand their perceptionsof, and attitudes towards bus travel. Using this,we created an integrated online and offlinetargeted advertising campaign to raiseawareness of the bus travel information availableon the Connect Tees Valley website. Ourcampaign created an 89% increase in monthlyunique visitors to ConnectTeesValley.comcompared to the same period of June to Sept in2012, and Connect Tees Valley facebook page“likes” increased by 51%.

This PTP programme encourages more people touse sustainable modes of transport, especiallyrail and to reduce the need to travel. The projectis run in four towns and in each town theintervention has a specific theme to help test theapproach. These include: assessing thesegmentation priority ranking, existingcommunity versus new development, combiningresidential and business PTP.

Habits are formed quickly and difficult to break.Experience and emerging research show that keylife transitions points are when habits can bebroken. Phillip Darnton OBEPhillip has always been actively engagedin the world of cycling. Since 2011, Philliphas taken on various roles – as ExecutiveDirector of the Bicycle Association;

Chairman of the Cycle Rail Working Group for theDepartment of Transport, and Chairman of theAssociation of Bikeability Schemes. He chairs twocommercial organisations – Brompton Dock andChallenge for Change. He was awarded an OBE in2010 for his services to cycling.

James DatsonSenior ConsultantJames Datson is a Senior Consultant with over fourteenyears experience in transport planning consultancy. He specialises in promoting sustainable travel within theAtkins Highways and Transportation business, providing afocus on cycle route planning and design, initiatives topromote cycling and bike share projects.

Thomas EvansLSTF Project Officer, Gloucestershire County Council Thomas Evans is a LSTF Project Officer atGloucestershire County Council. He has

been in the sustainable transport industry for over 6years during which he has enjoyed work placements inDubai and TfGM.

Councillor Andrew FenderChair of Transport for Greater ManchesterCommitteeAndrew was first elected in 1977 torepresent the Hulme and Moss Side

Wards on the former Greater Manchester CountyCouncil (GMC), and served until the Council’sabolition in 1986. When Labour took control of theGMC in 1981, Andrew was elected Chair of itsTransportation Strategy Committee.

Kate Fillin-YehDirector of the Bike Share Program, New York CityDepartment of TransportationHer work with the City has covered all aspects ofimplementing New York’s wildly successful CitiBikesystem, from writing the 2009 feasibility study tooverseeing the request for proposals process,designing the station network plan, identifying andselecting station locations, running NYCDOT’sunprecedented bike share community outreachprocess, and monitoring CitiBike’s ongoing operations.

She is heavily involved in themanagement and coordination of LSTF workplaceengagement. Lucy has over five years transportplanning experience, working previously in the privatesector with a Masters in Transport Engineering &Planning.

Helen MackClient Account Manager, LiftshareWith an MSC in Business Managementand a background in Marketing andAccount Management, she joined the

Liftshare team ten months ago. Today she works with anumber of clients to help promote their Liftshareschemes through brand development and marketingincluding accounts such as Heathrow, Centrica, Oxfamand Gloucestershire County Council.

Tony MeehanService Director for Strategic Advice, ATKINSTony leads a wide range of services including strategicand local transport planning, ITS consultancy,transport modelling, development and public realm,transport PPP advisory. Jon OrcuttPolicy Director at the New York City Dept. ofTransportationJon oversaw development of NYC DOT'sstrategic plan in 2007-2008 and has

been a leader of the team that has delivered majorstreet design and other transportation innovations inNYC over the past six years. These include major newpedestrian and public spaces along Broadway inManhattan and throughout the city, weekendpedestrian streets, a robust and extensive cyclingnetwork and a set of new safety programs, including20mph zones in residential areas. He led thedevelopment of a large scale public bicycle program(Citi Bike) and New York’s integrated pedestrianwayfinding system.

managing the delivery of the Travel Choices andCommuter Cycle programmes, both funded by LSTF.Previously, Helen has led on a number of award-winning sustainable transport and behaviour changeprogrammes, playing a significant role in delivering theLondon2012 Travel Demand Management programme.

Eleanor RoafNorth West Regional Director, SustransEleanor Roaf joined Sustrans as North West RegionalDirector in March 2013. Her background is in PublicHealth, working for the NHS in the northwest. She hasworked in Manchester for the last 10 years, and wasthe Director of Public Health for North ManchesterPCT, and more recently was a Consultant in PublicHealth for NHS Manchester.

Dr. Maxwell J. Roberts B.Sc. Ph.D.My research interests fit into the broad area of humanreasoning and intelligence. In particular, I aminterested in individual differences in the strategiesthat people use to solve problems, their causes, andtheir consequences. It is my belief that until weunderstand individual differences, we will never fullyunderstand cognition.

Sam RobinsonGeneral Manager, Challenge for ChangeSam joined the team at Challenge forChange in early 2011 as BusinessDevelopment Manager and has now

Over the past 16 yearshe has gained extensive experience of infrastructuredesign for cyclists and pedestrians in the UK andabroad and is regarded as one of the leading experts inthis field.

Koen SaleminkResearcher at the Faculty of Spatial Sciences, University of GroningenKoen Salemink is a researcher at the Faculty of SpatialSciences, University of Groningen (NL). The goal of hisresearch is to assess the socio-economic role of ICTdevelopments in rural areas . His position is co-fundedby EU Interreg IVB subsidies from the project ITRACT:Improving Transport and Accessibility through newCommunication Technologies.

Chris ScarllProject Manager, AirbusChris is the head of the Airbus Project ManagementOffice for the A380 Wing, Pylon & HTP activities,based at Filton near Bristol. For the past 2 years Chrishas also been the site travel plan coordinatorresponsible for developing the Filton travel plan insupport of the site redevelopment.

Zsolt SchullerStrategic Sustainable Travel Officer, Devon County CouncilA transport Planner with over 10 years experiencespecialising in behaviour change and promotingsustainable travel modes. He was Project Manager forExeter’s Cycling Demonstration Town between 2006-2011 and has since been involved in a number of LocalSustainable Transport Fund Programmes.

John ScreetonSenior Researcher, Department for TransportJohn is responsible for the design and qualityassurance of social research used and commissionedby the Department in relation to behavioural insightsand Ultra Low Emission Vehicles. John has previouslyheld positions at the Department for Education, EKOSConsulting and Plymouth University.
