Definitions

About fArming prActices

As you do your research, you’ll find different terminology describing the farming practices farmers use. Here are some brief definitions to give you an idea of what they mean:

Organic. Emphasis on ecological production methods; rely primarily on cultural and biological management practices and have access to a very limited number of synthetic materials for disease or pest control. Organic animals have outdoor access and ruminants must be given pasture. Unless a farm grosses less than $5K per year from organic product sales, expect farms that market themselves as organic to be certified by an accredited certifier such as MOFGA Certification Services.

Biodynamic. Emphasis on practices and preparations that work with natural forces in order to bring about balance and healing. A certification program exists through Demeter, the international biodynamic growers association.

Natural. Federal guidelines define this as meat that has not been given any growth hormones or antibiotics, but you should check with your farmer to clarify their meaning.

Grass Fed. Federally defined as ruminants receiving 100% grass/roughage feed and pasture during the pasture season. When the term is used in reference to other animals, it generally means that animals are raised on pasture (but are also fed grain). A more appropriate term for non-ruminants on pasture is “Pastured” or “Pasture raised”.

About shAre sizes

Determining share sizes and how to communicate them to customers is something that most CSA farmers struggle with. The following terms used in this publication should be loosely interpreted. Contact the farm to find out more about the makeup of its shares.

Full Share- usually intended to feed a family of four or two adult veggie lovers.

Half Share-usually intended to feed two adults. Also called “Small”, “Partial”, or “Single”

Market, Draw Down, Credit or Debit Style Shares- work like a gift card. You pay up front and spend from the farm stand or at the farmers market when and what you choose.

Winter Share- usually runs from November to March and consists of a monthly or bi-weekly supply of storage vegetables.

About This DirectoryThis publication does not include detailed information about the kind of shares each farm offers. For more detailed information, please contact the farm directly, or see the full directory listing on our website:
