Getting Ready

Part E Fun Time

Work in pairs. Discuss the following questions, and then share your answers with the whole class.1. How to be successful? Share your opinion with your partner.

1) The most important key to success is do what you love. You aren’t going to be successful at something you fear.

2) Preparation and Planning :(1) Make a List of Short, Medium, and Long-Term

Goals. Each night before you go to sleep, try to write down 510 things that you want to accomplish the next day. Make sure that at least 34 are things that you can complete that day. You should also make sure to add a couple of small parts of medium or long-term projects.

(2) Mark Your Progress — Write down things you finish and every goal that you have achieved, so you know what you have to do next.

3) Learn These Skills● Public Speaking — It helps you to present your

idea clearly and in a persuasive way.● Writing — Even if you are crafting a short e-mail,

try to use proper grammar. Poor writing skills on the first impression will only show that you are not intelligent and not professional. A person who can write great usually win people’s respect and trust.

● Networking — Get out there and meet new people in your areas of interest. When you know a lot of people, opportunities increase.

● Read More and Faster — Efficient reading helps you to gather more information and finish your task quicker than others.

4) Take Action● Help Someone with Something Every day —

People you helped may become successful. They will return the favor. If you mentor someone, you’ll be seen as a natural leader. There is a strong correlation between leadership and success.

● Surround Yourself with Like-Minded Individuals — There are studies that show an individual’s income will be somewhere around the average of your closest five friends.

● Don’t waste your time in entertainment — Don’t watch TV or movies or play games before you finish your task of the day.

successful-in-the-new-year/)

2. Introduce to your partner a successful relative or friend of yours. Tell your partner why you think he/she is successful.

My brother is a hotel manager. I think he is very successful both in his career and in his life. The reason is that he has certain traits that ensure him to be successful. They are :1) He is positive. He will never let negative events alter his ego. His colleagues and friends want to stay with him because he makes them feel better.

2) He never criticizes others. When something doesn’t work as expected he tries to find solutions instead of complaining about the problem.

3) He knows how to listen. He always says that people like to talk, because they think there is someone listening, so in reality people like to be listened. He talks less and listens more. If he doesn’t know what to say, he asks questions instead of talking about himself.

The first impulse and the immediate response to failure should be to learn from that failure. This learning is helpful to correct, minimize, or overcome the failure and apply all associated insights to attempt to prevent failures in the future.Failure’s role is to teach us. We learn from failure.Failure teaches us that we need to change our plans.Failure teaches us that we need to change our decisions.Failure teaches us that we need to change our resources.

3. What do you think of the following quotation? Failure is success if we learn from it. — Malcolm Forbes

Failure teaches us that we need to change our strategies.Failure teaches us that we need to change our hunches.Failure teaches us that we need to change our teamwork.Failure teaches us that we need to change our risks.Failure teaches us that we need to change a lot of things! But at least now we know one more thing that won’t work! With every failure, we learn one more way we can abandon and focus on what may be the correct way in the future! When we look at it that way, we set ourselves up for a powerfully successful future! So when you fail, ask yourself this question: What does this failure teach me?(See http: //EzineArticles.com/10396)

W: I just came across a success quote by Albert Schweitzer and it’s very insightful.

M: What is it?W: “Success is not the key to happiness. Happiness

is the key to success. If you love what you are doing, you will be successful.”

M: Does it mean success doesn’t always bring about happiness?

W: Yes. It also means that happiness is what we should focus on.

M: You’re right. It is insightful. For a long time, I thought if I could earn a lot of money, then all the problems in my life would be solved and I’d be happy.

W: Money can’t solve all the problems and success is not just about wealth. There are many different ways to be successful. You can successfully clean your house, cook a meal, read a book, walk the dog, pay your bills, or put your children through college.

M: Yes. Success is all around us.

Word Tips

Do you believe that success is the opposite of failure? That’s exactly what most of us have thought. If someone makes an all out effort to achieve some goal but doesn’t quite make it, what have they done? Have they failed? Well, that all depends on what they think of success and failure. My question is: have you ever accomplished anything worthwhile that only required one attempt to get it right? Have you ever seen a baby go from crawling to walking without ever falling down?

Paul Simon said, “You got to learn how to fall, before you learn to fly.” This means that before you get what you want you will have to fail several or even many times. However, each attempt brings us closer to our intended result. With that in mind, what matters is not just the final result but the whole learning process.

I. Lead-inDiscuss the following questions before watching the video.

You are going to watch a video clip What Is True Success (2'56"). and then do the following exercises.

Success for me is living the life I want which I desire deeply. It is not about feeling happy with what I have. Every little success is a piece of the big picture. You cannot achieve true success unless you can answer two questions: 1) what do you want? and 2) why do you want it?

1. How do you define success?

2. Do you think success is measured by money?a) Yes, I think so. Although it’s sad to admit this,

it’s a truth. Nowadays, everyone wants to be a banker and make money and only care about material things.

b) No, I don’t think so. I believe that success has nothing to do with money. Success for me is being able to look back over my life and having no regrets and being able to say “I’m happy or I did good.”

3. Who do you think is the most successful person in your life? And why?I think my great grandfather was a very successful man. He had no money but he was everybody’s friend and he died a happy man. He left no silver or gold but his words still live on and everyone smiles once they hear his name.

1. Being successful only means having thing or power or money or winning some kind of prize.

Just as Vince Lombardi said, “Hard work is the price we must pay for success. I think you can accomplish anything if you’re willing to pay the price.”

25.Who does the speaker most likely speak to?

“I’m going to fall.” He must have been about 10 years old and afraid of heights. Yet, somehow he’d managed to climb up the ladder of the swing. “Focus on reaching for the bar,” his instructor cried. “Focus on your goal.” The kid looked nervously down. “I can’t. I’ll fall. I’ll get hurt,” was the child’s answer. This went on for about 20 minutes until he climbed back down the ladder without trying the swing.

His sister was next. I don’t think she once looked down because before she reached the platform her eyes were never away from that bar. You could see she loved every minute of it.

These two kids were both trying to do the same thing but they ended up with different results. One hated it and the other loved it. One failed and the other was successful. Yet really the only difference was that one could only see the possibility of falling and the other her goal.

Only focusing on not failing means you’re getting in your way of success. So, the next time you’re struggling with your goals, ask yourself: What am I focusing on and what do I really want?

Success comes with hard work. In order to succeed you must have the desire and the determination to succeed. Not many people will be successful in life but success can be achieved. Here are some tips to succeed.

1) First you must believe in yourself and your ability to succeed. Without believing in yourself you have already lost the race. In everything you do you should have self-confidence.

2) Work Hard and be very disciplined (严格要求自己 ). Success do not come overnight ( 一夜之间 ), you must work hard for it and be disciplined. Without these two, it is almost impossible for you to be successful. It won’t be easy, but it can be done.

3) Balance your life. It is important to remember that even as we work hard we should take some time to have fun. There is time for everything, set a time to have fun and be with your family and friends. It is also important to remember that we should get the work done first, and then have fun.

4) Have good manners. We should always show respect to other persons and distinguish ourselves as ladies and gentlemen. As a famous proverb goes, “Manners carry you through the world and back without a penny.”

5) Take time to educate yourself and become qualified. Never think that you have learned enough and that your job is safe. You should have the necessary tools to be successful, and that includes having an education.

6) Never forget where you come from. Having achieved some status, many people “bad-mouth” the places where they came from and their family. This will lead to failure in the future as the same person you talk badly about now can be the one who will rescue you in the long run.

Humility in professional sports is a lost commodity. The concept is odd to many players and they don’t understand basketball sensation of Yao Ming’s humility. Some coaches and players say other teams and game officials take advantage of Yao’s kind spirit. They believe he must change his attitude to gain respect, but the fans love Yao Ming and find his humility refreshing.

Here are 6 instructions as to how to stay humble in success like Yao Ming:

1) Show the best of your talent and work hard.

2) Demonstrate a cooperative nature by following all of the workplace rules. Yao Ming never makes a stand against officiators, kicks the ball in the stands or receives technical fouls for a poor attitude.

3) Present a positive image at all times and be a good role model. Bitterness or defensiveness expressed to other players, coaches or officials is never part of Yao’s game.

4) Accept physical or emotional bumps and bruises as part of the job and don’t hit back with your fists, elbows or unkind words. Yao Ming expresses himself without anger and doesn’t get into the face of other players.

5) Play as a team member and don’t call attention to yourself. Modesty and decency are part of Yao Ming’s culture, character and basketball game.

6) Use your skill, talent and other relevant attributes to demonstrate your confidence. Yao Ming is China’s finest basketball player, and a 7-foot-6 player isn’t susceptible to intimidation. He’s the intimidator because of his size.

In short, if you follow all the 6 instructions to stay humble in success like Yao Ming, you will never look back on your career with regret.
