XXVI INTERNATIONAL MINERAL PROCESSING CONGRESS (IMPC) 2012 PROCEEDINGS / NEW DELHI, INDIA / 24 - 28 SEPTEMBER 2012

Welcome We extend a warm welcome to all our delegates to IMPC 2012 It is a great honour for the mineral engineering fraternity in India to host the XXVI International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC) in New Delhi from September 24 -28, 2012. It is indeed a privilege for us in India to welcome you and celebrate with you the glorious sixty years of IMPC in New Delhi in September 2012. The Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers (IIME) and The Indian Institute of Metals (IIM) are proud to be the organizers of the XXVI IMPC in collaboration with and support from other professional organizations and industry.

India is known for its ancient heritage in minerals and metals. The non-corroding Delhi Iron pillar (more than 1600 years old), the legendary Wootz steel from which famous Damascus swords were made, the ruins of ancient retorts that were used to produce thousands of tons of zinc in Rajasthan, the exquisitely crafted bronze icons from south India made by the "lost wax' process - are all testimony to the level of technological excellence achieved by the Indian sub-continent. Minerals and metals industry continues to be of great importance to India and it is going through resurgence in recent times. Impressive growth projections in the production of minerals during the next decade promise huge investments in the industry.

The mining, minerals and metals industry globally and particularly in India is confronted with new challenges of reducing its environmental footprint. Land, energy and water are extremely scarce resources in India. Our theme for IMPC 2012 is therefore titled "Innovative Processing for Sustainable Growth". IMPC has been an excellent forum for the best professionals from the industry, academia, and the research institutions to meet and deliberate on the challenges and the opportunities in the field. All of us in the organizing committee have worked hard to make IMPC 2012 a professionally rewarding and socially enjoyable experience for all our delegates.

We would like to extend a warm welcome to all the delegates to IMPC 2012 and wish you all a pleasant and fruitful stay in New Delhi.

Pradip B. K. Mishra

President Chairman (Organizing Committee)

XXVI INTERNATIONAL MINERAL PROCESSING CONGRESS (IMPC) 2012 PROCEEDINGS / NEW DELHI, INDIA / 24 - 28 SEPTEMBER 2012

Foreword The XXVI International Mineral Processing Congress (IMPC 2012), being organized in New Delhi, India during 24-28 September, 2012, marks a milestone in the annals of IMPC, as it heralds the completion of sixty years since the commencement of this prestigious Congress series dedicated to mineral processing. We are indeed honoured to host this prestigious event for the first time in India. The theme of the Congress “Innovative Processing for Sustainable Growth” has been aptly chosen to address the current challenges facing the minerals industry worldwide.

IMPC 2012 is jointly organized by the Indian Institute of Mineral Engineers and the Indian Institute of Metals and is supported by the Ministries of Steel, Mines, Coal, and Science and Technology of the Government of India, as well as the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), and the Indian National Academy of Engineering (INAE). The munificent support received from our patrons- Metso, Tata Steel and Vale, and the platinum, diamond, gold and silver sponsors has made it possible to organize an event of this magnitude, and we are indebted to them. We are also grateful to the sponsors of various sessions, Congress lunches, dinners and banquet.

The response to the call for abstracts was overwhelming and over 1100 abstracts were received. After the due review process carried out by a minimum of two referees, anonymous to the authors, around 650 full manuscripts were submitted by the authors for inclusion in the Congress Proceedings volume. The subject matter encompasses a broad range of themes dealing with beneficiation of bauxite and base metals, mineral processing for iron and steel industry, coal preparation, processing of precious metals, industrial minerals, strategic and rare minerals, dewatering and rheology of suspensions, sorting techniques, separation processes, sustainability and environmental issues apart from traditional areas such as mineralogical characterization, flotation, comminution, agglomeration and hydrometallurgy. Special sessions are arranged for human resource development and for leveraging information and communication technologies for mining and mineral processing. The technical programme is organized in seven parallel sessions each day and two dedicated poster sessions, besides the 11 plenary lectures. In addition to the keynote and invited presentations (44), the technical talks comprise of oral (180), short oral (170) and poster presentations (270). The Technical Committee was confronted with the herculean task of scrutinizing the abstracts, identifying the reviewers for refereeing the full manuscripts, and finally going through the difficult selection process for the oral, short oral and poster presentations. The Technical Committee expresses its deep sense of gratitude to all the authors for their valuable contributions, in particular for sending the revised manuscripts in time so that the publication deadlines could be met, as well as the referees- which also included the IMPC Council members - for their critical inputs for enhancing the value of these contributions to the mineral engineering community at large.

The publication of the Congress Proceedings, Book of Abstracts, and the Technical Programme was entrusted to Technowrites, Pune, New Concept, Delhi, and Navbharath Press, Bangalore, respectively – an arduous task indeed - to whom we express our sincere gratitude. We trust you will find the Proceedings a valuable record of the innovations, research and development work and plant practices being carried out the world over in this important discipline.

Needless to say, we are highly indebted to the members of the International Advisory Committee, Congress Steering Committee, Organising Committee, the patrons, sponsors, exhibitors, media partners, co-hosts and all who have worked tirelessly and spared no effort in the various organizational tasks. On behalf of the Technical Committee, we look forward to meeting you at New Delhi and are hopeful you will find the XXVI International Mineral Processing Congress, in its diamond jubilee year, a rewarding and fruitful experience.

S.P. Mehrotra and S. Subramanian Chairpersons, Technical Committee, IMPC 2012
