AUGUST 2018 NorthLink WA - Central Section Reid Highway to Ellenbrook Great Northern Connect, a joint venture between BGC Contracting and Laing O’Rourke, is working in partnership with Main Roads to deliver the NorthLink WA central section. The $1.02b NorthLink WA initiative is jointly funded by the Australian ($821m) and Western Australian ($204m) governments. We’re over half way through winter, but the rain hasn’t stopped us from getting the job done. Winter is a great time to begin landscaping works; you’ll see tube stock being planted and seed being spread around the Reid Highway/Altone Road intersection. All of the road bridges on this section are being worked on simultaneously and large stretches of asphalt are nearing completion. We’ve even started finishing works, such as kerbing and installing lights in some areas along the Tonkin Highway extension. In the coming months, you’ll notice more road changes as we progress quickly to finish sections of work around the Reid and Tonkin Highways, as well as the Hepburn Avenue area. Please remember that the Tonkin and Reid Highways and Hepburn Avenue are active construction sites; pay careful attention and slow down when driving through these areas as the conditions may have changed since your last journey. A temporary roundabout has replaced the signals at the Tonkin/Reid Highway intersection. Motorists are also travelling on the newly constructed bridges on Reid Highway, between Tonkin Highway and Beechboro Road North. NorthLink WA - Central SectionReid Highway to Ellenbrook

Great Northern Connect, a joint venture between BGC Contracting and Laing O’Rourke, is working in partnership with Main Roads to deliver the NorthLink WA central section.

Upcoming road network changes

In June, we took groups from the Eastern Metropolitan Region Councils, City of Swan, and students from the Indigenous Australian Engineering School on a tour through the NorthLink WA central section construction site.

The groups got a first hand look at the construction site and learnt how NorthLink WA central section would change the road network. A key highlight was showing off the bridges in the Tonkin/Reid Highway interchange area.

Tim Keely, Curtin University STEM Outreach Coordinator said the NorthLink WA central section site visit provided a great opportunity to show prospective engineering students a large scale design and construction project they could be involved in after University studies.

“The students were all blown away by the size and scope of the work. All the design, quality control, logistics and detail is often not appreciated until you get a chance to see it up close,” Tim said.

Engaging with our community

In the coming months, watch out for:

• Sand and fill haulage operations continue around site.

• Continuing noise wall installation at Ellenbrook.

• Works to continue to build the new Reid Highway carriageways between Beechboro Road North and Altone Road, and the on and off ramps for the Reid/Tonkin Highway interchange.

• Bridge works to continue at Baal Street, The Promenade, Hepburn Avenue, Marshall Road and Beechboro Road North.

• Asphalting across the entire project length.

• Landscaping works to continue at the Reid Highway/Altone Road intersection.

The Great Northern Connect staff assisted the landscaping team plant the first of more than two million plants across the central section.

We’ve been conducting seed collection for the past two years and will have another collection later this yet to ensure we have the 800kg of seed that is required to complete landscaping works.
