There will be an opportunity for a group photo after the benediction. Joe Paparone from FOCUS and Johanna Nadeau from Emmanuel will lead a teach-in on wage issues after the service.     This Wednesday FOCUS Churches will be well represented: Rev. Susan Vincent-Cox will be the keynote speaker. Rev. Deb Jameson and FOCUS VolunteerCoordinator Belinda Quaye will be part of the Connecting Seniors panel.

  • FOCUS on Schools is almost here! Please continue to collect supplies at your site.Donations may bedropped off at FUUSA (First United Universalist Society ofAlbany) 405 Washington Ave.in Albany, fromAugust 24 through August 27, 9 am to1 pm. Volunteers are needed to help pack and distribute supplies.If you can help,please call Belinda at the FOCUS office, 443-0460 or email [email protected].

    4.Advocacy UpdatesAt the FOCUS Joint worship service onJuly 5th, we were joined by ChrisMcNabb from the National ReligiousCampaign Against Torture. After theservice about 40 people joined him tolearn more about the ongoing torture ofsolitary confinement in our prisons andsome steps we can take. Hell bespeaking again at First Church on July26th, so if you missed it, you can catchhim there.

    At the FOCUS Joint worship service on July 5th, we were joined by Chris McNabbfrom the National Religious Campaign Against Torture. After the service about 40people joined him to learn more about the ongoing torture of solitary confinement inour prisons and some steps we can take. Hell be speaking again at First Church onJuly 26th, so if you missed it, you can catch him there. We gathered signedpostcards asking Assemblymembers McDonald and Santabarbara to co-sponsor theHALT Solitary legislation, and well be delivering those to the offices the last week ofJuly.If you are interested in joining us on those visits, contactJoe.

    At the workshop there were some questions regarding the alternatives to solitaryincluded in the HALT legislation we gathered some info and its too much toinclude in the alert, but e-mail Joe and he can pass it along.

  • WAGE BOARD UPDATEThe Fast Food Wage Board appointed by Gov Cuomo should have theirrecommendations finalized by the end of this month, and things are looking good fora substantial minimum wage increase for fast food workers! At the last hearing, allthree members of the board agreed that the wage should be raised to at least$15/hr, and they discussed details of implementation. Once they make therecommendations, there will be a period for public comment. Well provide links assoon as theyre available.

    SUMMER MEALS ACT and STOPCHILD SUMMER HUNGER ACTThere are two new bills in Congressthat would expand access andstrengthen summer meal programs;helping low-income families purchasegroceries while their children are out ofschool.
