Understanding theCTU CodePoor CTU packing and incorrectdeclaration of contents is responsible foran alarmingly high percentage of incidentsalong the transport chain, leading todamage, loss, injuries and even fatalities.

Updated Code of Practice for the Packingof Cargo Transport Units (CTU) In a vital move to tackle dangerous packing, the IMO, ILO and UNECE have released anupdated Code of Practice for the Packing ofCTUs, providing guidelines and informationfor all members of the global logistics chain –from shippers, cargo packers, forwardersand logistics companies through to road, railand sea carriers, ports and terminals, depots, insurers and other cargo handlinginterests. The Code also addresses issuessuch as training and the packing ofdangerous goods.

The CTU Code clarifies theresponsibilities and obligationsThe Cargo Transport Units Code (CTU Code)tightens and clarifies the responsibilities andobligations of the various participants in themarine supply chain – consignors, packers, road haulage companies, rail companies andrecipients. This is a positive change, as itallows the cause of damage to a load to beswiftly identified. As a CTU passes throughso many hands in the global shippingindustry, this pinpointing of liability allowsauthorities to deal effectively with anyincident. The Code is usable when a relatedcomplaint reaches court, which was not thecase with the previous Guide.

East Midlands BrexitStrategy GroupSharing sector expertise and creating aknowledge base for the East Midlands.

Spatial Global provides industry expertiseon Brexit Strategy Group As a member of the East Midlands BrexitStrategy Group, Rachel Morley was invited toattend a roundtable lunch with Lord Callanan,Minister for the Department for Exiting theEuropean Union and Emma McClarkin, MEPfor the East Midlands. Also in attendancewere 15 regional businesses, all representingdifferent areas of interest from manufacture, services, finance, recruitment andinternational trade. The East Midlands BrexitStrategy Group is hosted jointly by the EastMidlands Chamber (Derbyshire,Nottinghamshire and Leicestershire).

Shaping the development of theChamber’s 2018 lobbying prioritiesThe purpose of the East Midlands BrexitStrategy Group is to share sector expertiseand create a knowledge base for the EastMidlands. The agenda showcased theChamber’s 2018 lobbying priorities, togetherwith activities of the Brexit Advisory Group –one year before the UK leaves the EU. It’sbeen devised to help business-leadersminimise risk associated and implications ofBrexit, based on current developments andfeedback from members.

Spatial Global provide a tailored servicebacked by specialist import and exportknowledge“Spatial Global were introduced to us onrecommendation and were able to come inand evaluate where we could make financialsavings on our current overseas trade. Theyquickly identified immediate savings. Furtherunderstanding of the possibilities enabled usto develop more flexible solutions to tradewith overseas markets. This is primarilybecause they invested the time to get toknow our products, customers needs andhow we operate.”

Steve Botham, Purchasing & BusinessSystems Manager at Riverside PackagingLimited goes on to explain; “It’s helped ustremendously, as now we have an extensionof our business where we can tap into thespecialist expertise on international trade

routes. Helping us become more competitivebecause we can provide tailored solutions, whether importing raw materials fromoverseas or selling our products to meet thegrowing demands of an international market.”

Riverside Medical Packaging were aperfect fit for Spatial GlobalRachel Morley, General Manager of SpatialGlobal, explained how the fit and geographiclocation works for both companies.“Riverside Medical Packaging have greatproducts and we can help them operatetheir international trade more competitivelyby finding lower cost routes or solutions.Alternatively, we are experts in gettingproduct into difficult regions, so we alsodiscovered markets which they had avoidedbecause the standard operators were eithercost prohibitive or simply not interested.”

Investment doubles laser printing capacity Why are sea freight transit times slower?

As just one part of an ongoing process ofinvestment and optimisation at SpatialGlobal, the Mail team has taken delivery ofnew additional laser printers, doubling ourprevious capacity.

The high speed printers are equipped withduplexing and stapling capabilities andincrease our capacity to well over 175,000pages per day.

The mail team is focused on providing the bestpossible data management, fulfilment and mailingservices for every customer. This additional

investment in our printing capability builds on therecent purchase of a new polywrapping line, enabling us to be highly competitive on short, medium and high volume mailings.

2018 sees Spatial Global better positionedthan ever before to serve our Mail andEcommerce clients. The last 12 months havereally been a great boost to the range ofproducts and services we are able to offer.Coupled with the appointment of Julie Birch, our new Mail Sales Executive, we’re already offto a flying start this year.

Efforts to cut costs, reduce greenhousegas emissions and fuel consumption, means the world’s largest cargo ships aretravelling at lower speeds today thansailing clippers such as the Cutty Sark didmore than 130 years ago.

Shipping lines are saving money anddramatically reducing CO2Ship engines are designed to run at high speedsand burn the cheapest “bunker” oil – as they arenot subject to the same air quality rules as cars.To give you an idea of how toxic this is, the

Emma Maersk, first container ship in the E-classat 14,770+ TEU would burn around 300 tonnesof fuel a day, emitting as much as 1,000 tonnesof CO2 a day. This is about the same CO2 asthe 30 lowest emitting countries in the world.

Sea Freight is greenerEnvironmental issues are a growing concern forall businesses, and some may even haveenvironmental targets that they need to adhereto. If you want to minimise your carbon footprintwhen importing or exporting, shipping by sea isthe far more environmentally friendly option.

With year on year growth and expansion of their thermoforming packagingmachinery brand, Shawpak, Riverside Medical Packaging are increasingtheir presence as an international brand. With more complex routes, variations in delivery timescales and demands for ‘value add’ services, theyneeded a specialist partner to maximise the business growth opportunities.

Riverside Medical Packaging’sgrowth stimulates a revisedapproach to import and exports

“The cost benefits are clear. When speedis reduced by 20%, fuel consumption isreduced by 40% per nautical mile. Slowsteaming is here to stay. Its introductionhas been the most important factor inreducing our CO2 emissions in recentyears, and our goal is to reducing CO2emissions by 25%.”
