Mahindra Imperio Launched at Rs. 6.25 lac

Mahindra has launched its premium pick-up truck Imperio at Rs. 6.25 lac (Ex-showroom, Thane). Imperio is the revamped version of Genio, which was a pick-up, based on the Indian automaker’s Xylo MPV. The car features refreshed aesthetics that include a less utilitarian front fascia, which incorporates silver teeth over a backdrop of black honeycomb grill. The Bonnet incorporates a flared arch, which encased the Mahindra logo and the same treatment is garnered by the fog lamp encasings. Other aesthetic updates include wraparound rectangular headlamps and flared wheel arches.

The interiors of the pick-up are a straight lift from Genio/ Xylo. Imperio is available in both single cab, as well as double cab variants and the top-end models feature creature comforts like power windows, two drive modes (Eco and Power), AC, 2DIN music system, temematics compatibility, engine immobilizer, bucket seats and keyless entry etc.

Under the hood, Imperio is powered by a 2.5-liter diesel mill, which is capable of producing 75bhp of power and 220Nm of peak torque and is similar to that seen in the Genio. The powerplant comes mated to a 5-speed manual transmission, which assists it in achieving a top speed of 120kmph and offering a fuel-economy of 13.55kmpl (not at the same time). As far as its pick-up duties are concerned, Imperio has a payload capacity of 1240kgs and comes with an impressive 211mm of ground clearance.

Pick-up truck Imperio will create new niche segment: M&M

In a bid to strengthen its position in the small commercial segment, leading SUV maker M&M drove in its new premium pick-up truck Imperio on Wednesday. Pravin Shah, president and chief executive – automotive division, M&M, explains why he expects the vehicle to do well even in a declining small commercial vehicle market. Q: Tell us more about the product? A: This product is going to create a new niche segment which is not going to intrude into the Bolero Maxi truck or the Bolero Pickup or for that matter the recently-launched Supro products. So, product surely meets the varying and different needs of the customers and the customers what we expect are the small SMEs and the businessman who would prefer to have the Imperio, both single cab as well as double cab as part of their business companion. Q: Just today, Prakash Javadekar has issued a tweet stating that the government has decided to directly leapfrog to BS-VI norms with effect from April 1, 2020. We know that a lot of original equipment manufacturer (OEM) are opposed to this given that they feel that the technology is not in place to be able to directly leapfrog to BS-VI in that short a time. What is your personal take on this issue and can you help us understand what the repercussions could be for not only Mahindra but for the larger OEM industry? A: As things stands today, up till now, we have worked hand in hand with the government and met, and came to the stage in the shortest possible time to BS-IV. It is industry’s request that we should have the BS-IV available to start with all India which currently is available only in 38 cities. So, that is what is our plea.

Mahindra launches the Imperio at Rs 6.25 lakh in India

Mahindra has launched the Imperio, their new pickup truck that is replacing the Genio. Based on the same Ingenio platform as the latter, the Imperio receives a new front end that’s SUV inspired. The bonnet, front fenders and face are all-new and we expect to see a similar change in the updated Quanto and Xylo as well.

The cosmetic change improves styling considerably. The new face looks quite aggressive for a utility vehicle. The headlamps are smart and the new front grille is quite prominent thanks to the design and colour contrast. The bumper features large vents and inserts, adding to the aggressive face. Mahindra likes to call it a premium pickup truck. This is also one of the reasons why the Imperio gets a choice of various metallic hues like the attractive Verve Blue and Lava Red you see here.

Mahindra says that the customer’s needs are ever evolving and offering a product that caters to these needs is what the Imperio and future products focus on. The target customer for such a vehicle are contractors, farmers and businessmen. The Imperio is claimed to perform well in rugged terrain, and be low maintenance, while still offering car-like comfort and modern tech.

The Imperio will be offered in two body options – single and double cab. The double cab Imperio is aimed for more diverse functions than the larger, load carrying single cab, which will be preferred by the farming industry.

The Imperio also offers air-conditioning, bucket seats and tilt adjustable power steering. The double cab variant also gets power windows, keyless entry and a double-din stereo. Other tech features include two driving modes – Power and Eco. The latter is claimed to offer 7 per cent better efficiency. There’s also an option to install a vehicle tracker as an accessory. There is no airbag or ABS offered, even as an option.

Both models get a DI motor with common-rail technology which produces 75PS and 220Nm of torque. Top speed and fuel efficiency are claimed to be 120kmph and 13.55kmpl, respectively. Total payload is 1,240kg, according to Mahindra. 16-inch wheels are offered as standard (The Genio offers a 15-inch wheel). There are four variants on offer. The single cab and double cab models get two variants each.
